Yet the players who practice with him and play with him think he's a ***** that won't even make the team next year.

I think I'll believe the players. Although I won't be surprised when Ireland stubbornly keeps him around for another season.

A big fat facepalm if Egnew is Ireland's plan to address the tight end position. And everyone hoping that Tannehill gets some tools this season should be super scared if Egnew is going to be one of those "tools".

  5. I honestly do not put much stock in his struggles this year as an indication of anything nor do I view Jeffs vote of confidence as a validation of anything. He is off to a slow start but he may pick it up this off season. This is one of those issues that you have to put your faith in the coaching staff on. Maybe the guy needs some extra time but will eventualy develope into a 1st ballot HOF or maybe he busts out. As long as he remains on the team means the staff have not given up all hope on him.

I really think it's a shame that a guy's career could be over before he even plays and proves himself unworthy.

Yes because we ALL know if you don't perform as a rookie, you are destined for 100% guaranteed failure.

Could've said any number of things that don't involve promising a guy is going to have a very good season when I think we all know he might not even survive camp cuts.

Here's an example of just one of the infinite things he could've said:

"We still have a lot of faith in Michael Egnew. He just needs to keep working hard and continue to develop his weaknesses, and we need to do a good job coaching him."

    Or how about:

"Michael Egnew probably didn't have the rookie season he would've envisioned, but a lot of that had to do with the players he sat behind. He just needs to continue to work hard. He'll get his opportunity and when that happens, we'll see how he responds."

    Or maybe:

"Not all draft picks are successful overnight. Some guys take a little bit of development, and it's not surprising Michael would need some of that considering the system he came from. We're basically rebuilding him from the ground-up as a tight end. Hopefully he'll come around."

Any number of possibilities that don't imply that A) He's making the team, B) He'll be Active, C) He'll be thrown in the games a lot, and D) He will produce.

Of course Irish is going to say this, he drafted him.....to knock Egnew is knocking himself essentially.

Players on Miami called him a pus$y.....that pretty much sums it up...

As do I, I'm hard on him b/c he had a golden opportunity to make an impact this year and wound going Lorenzo Booker mia.

Bet he can kick some butt on COD though.

That not every player who was in our lockerroom was a genius evaluator of talent.

I don't know if Chad was actually the one that said it, but it'd be funny if he did.

difference between good and VERY good. "we need to do a good job coaching him" is not what you'd want your GM saying in the offseason if you're on the coaching staff. As for your last sentence, he obviously still believes he can hit all four of those objectives. I think those are standard things that don't imply he's going to make the Pro Bowl let alone be starting. Jeron Mastrud hit all four of those objectives.

It's indicative of where we are with Jeff Ireland though. This is not a first year GM we have and we all know he's on the hot seat. Given that, I would expect him to say nothing less.

I guess but I certainly doubt Egnew would be the straw that broke the camel's back for Ireland if he ends up busting.

Whats the downside of that implication? I can't see one for the team. But it does at the least provide some type of encouragement to a player that presumably has disappointed.

    He said "very good".

    That's a stretch.

"Can" being the operative word. He essentially promised that Egnew WILL hit all four.

The downside is continuing to make the front office look like it doesn't know what it's talking about, which is a detriment to the team.

Not just fan opinion. Media perception as well, and perception from other teams and other front offices.

I'll agree with you on the fan and media thing. But I don't believe for a second that an opposing front office hears Jeff Ireland make this quote and actually believes Ireland is being candid or forthcoming. This just reeks of the typical empty platitudes teams make when they're trying to motivate someone thats likely down on himself.

I never said that or implied it. But based on the fact that he couldn't even get on the field coupled with the perceptions of his teammates it does not bode well. And given his struggles as a rookie, IMO, it would be a huge mistake for Ireland to assume Egnew is the answer at tight end.

Also, there's a big difference between struggling as a rookie and not being able to make the field in a position that's arguably a weakness for this team.

Since he drafted Egnew for one of the draft picks he got in the Marshall trade, what else do you expect him to say? The fact is that not only has Egnew got to have a good season next year, but the rest of the team does too. If not, Ireland won't be around after the 2013 season to worry about any of the Dolphin players, because he will no longer be the Dolphins GM.

of course he can, he can not make the team… On a side not, early in the year Mike Sherman said he would have cut Egnew. Towards the end of the year he said Egnew had made a lot of progress and thought he was going to be a good player… so, just food for thought from a guy that saw him every day

Did it occur to anyone that Ireland will soon be negotiating contracts with FAs, exploring trades and positioning the team in the draft? Of course he is going to play up a guy who is on the roster so that he doesn't look desperate for a TE.
