lol you must be joking. if Jake Long played as bad as Martin played this season, then not one single dolphins fan would want him back. Jake obviously played poorly this year, especially in the running game but he was FAR better in pass pro than Martin was, i mean its not even close, i watched Martin closely all season because i thought we should have taken a WR in the 2nd so i made it a goal of mine to evaluate him...dude Martin got worked on the regular. even at LT, he was dreadful in the niners game and the last pats game.

It seems that Long did not light it up either at the LT postion in 2012.

    Jake Long-

    pass pro: 35th
    run blocking: 48th
    overall: 46th

Maybe Jim Turner is over his head, as this is his first gig as a pro OL coach. Also new scheme does not fit the strengths of Jake Long. I love to see us draft Mathews from Texas AM with the 12th pick. Turner was his coach last year, so do not count him out. Also Mathews is the son of the great Clay Mathews.

Could you imagine the uproar if the Fins took an OL in the first?

I tell PFF purists often that they're a subjective rating outfit. They could be right but they're not invariably right. At one point in 2010 we were the number 1 graded offense collectively but still sucked. They do good work but shouldn't be the end all be all.

The guy wasn't good but I'd rather him than Long for 12 million.

No confirmation. I doubt they would admit it after the fact. I'm amazed Ryan didn't appear to get examined.

So believing it was a concussion is just common sense based on how he acted after the hit. The same way I figure that when a guy grabs his knee he may have hurt it.

)kind of like Padre's argument... you can believe your eyes.. you don't always need a third-party authority to proclaim something before you 'know it')

Hell no. If we draft a tackle there.....

And I think you mean Bruce Matthews?

    Work Ethic?
Before the draft one of the huge red flags was that Martin spent NO
time in the weight room and it showed as he put up 20 bench Presses

12 running backs had better combine bench press numbers
4 wide receivers had better numbers(Ruichaed Wallace put up
the same number(20) as Martin did
6 tight ends had better lift numbers
17 offensive tackles had better bench numbers
20 offensive guards had better bench numbers
    6 centers had better #s
22 defensive tackles had better #s
20 defensive ends had better #s
6 inside linebackers had better #s
17 outside linebackers had better #s
2 corner backs had better #s
    4 safeties had better #s

136 players put up better bench press numbers than Martin had at the combine
and we're suppose to think he's going to increase his strength with 1 off season

He has a better chance at eating spinach than lifting weights

No, not joking, Long was a sitting duck this yr.

I specialize in studying pass rushers Lb, which means I watch tackles, Long was really poor this year.

Looked to me like he got hit low and he was in pain (in his lower body). That IMO was why he was wobbly… I would find it hard to believe that the Fins would allow the future of their franchise to go out there with a concussion…. especially in a meaningless game for the Fins

I thought Long had his good moments but overall he was horrible this year. There is no way in the world that I would pay him over 6/7 mil to play for me if I was running a team.

of course he was poor, you don't have to be Ted Thompson to see that, but Martin was one of the worst tackles in the league.

I thought he improved steadily throughout the year, but maybe my eyes deceived me.

Maybe he was so bad that mere competent play looks much better than it really is.

Martin was drafted based on talent. He is young (only 23) and does need a great deal of strength and to get in better shape. But, that said, he clearly has the talent.

It will all come down to one thing: work ethic. If he has it, he can develop his body and technique and he will be a very good player. We do need some other linemen.

In the 1st 5 selections I think at least 3 need to be WR, TE and OL. I'd like the other two to be DB and DE.

stats are only as useful as person interpreting them, i.e, providing context. as bad as this thread is, it at least fosters discussion unlike your previous threads.

Martin's games at LT were better than he was at right tackle. everyone here saw that.
Martin had a bad game at LT vs New England, but the others were pretty decent.

regardless of how anyone feels about Ireland. He has a consistent habit of trying to find good value players in the draft, but ones that are raw and take longer to develop.
Martin fits that category. whether he pans out or not, we'll see next year, especially if Long walks. if he does, and Martin turns out to be OK, it's pretty smart planning by Ireland. if he doesn't, it's a wasted pick.

Didn't realize he had been a weight lifting slacker. Hate that attitue from a guy who is supposedly going to make this his CAREER.

I mean, you want to be paid millions to play this sport and you can;t be bothered to work out? ****, even *I* make it to the gym.

To the devil with the uproar. Just get it right already if Ireland is going to use high picks on linemen. I don't ever want to see a repeat performance of backs dancing behind the line because there's nowhere to run, and quarterbacks running for their lives because nobody can pass block.

Remember Ricky running for 1800 yards? It wasn't just Ricky.

Here's how to get the work ethic going, this offseason you lock him in a shower with Paul Soliai every night and have Solia attempt to wrestle him to the ground naked and make love to him.

If Jon Martin doesn;t get motivated to get stronger fro that, there is no hope.

Seriously though, I have serious reservations about a guy who was labelled lazy about strength training in college. Now, I never heard that label about Martin before it was brought up in this thread by someone else... but if it's true, I don't like him nearly as much and have less hope he'll improve.

    Work ethic doesn;t usually change.

i think most would agree that Martin did not have a good year ... was he a poor draft pick -- considering that he is 'likely' our LT of the future, i certainly don't think so. does the fact that he did not adapt quickly or well to RT reflect on him ... absolutely -- but the fact that we drafted a lifelong LT and 'assumed' he'd easily transition to RT is not his fault. Personally, i believe we drafted him for exactly what is happening now ... to take over LT, but playing this year at RT to get experience and reps before sliding over. i also think we knew before drafting him that he'd have to get stronger ...

the FO and coaching staff know what is going on with Long ... but to think we should franchise Long or sign him to some very lucrative contract, without some guarantee that he'd go back to the level of performance of his 1st 2 years would both be irresponsible and down right criminal ...

all that being said ... i have to assume you are an advocate of either drafting another T in the 1st round (which I am not) ... or hoping an praying that we can pay someone like Clady enough $$$ to come to South Beach ...

Long was worse b/c he was so easily set up, a savvy pass rusher owned him and it was obvious.

The whole reason this thread was started was for the OP to have another way to bash Ireland.

LB, do us all a favor and stop posting about him. We get it, you hate the man. Funny thing is when you're not rambling about Ireland you are a very good poster. I almost feel like you have multiple personalities (no Brandon Marshall).

Or, you could look at his posts as specific examples of WHY Ireland sucks. I think it's much more productive to back up the "Jeff Ireland sucks" position with examples. Or would you rather all criticism be quarantined to one thread you can ignore?

I don't mind criticism, plenty is warranted, but when every thread turns into an Ireland bashing session, it just gets repetitive and annoying.

Yeah, Jon Martin did not play better than Long this year.

With that said, he's a lot better than Colombo was last year, and he did have moments this year. If anything, he did enough this year to earn a "wait and see", IMO.

That line was composed of a CFL sign off, a guy the Bills dumped thinking he wouldn't play again, a long-time ok C drafted in the 2nd if I remember right, a mediocre Bears castoff, and a 2nd round pick.

It's really not that ****ing hard to put together an offensive line. It takes good coaching, solid players at all of the various spots, and a decent left tackle. The Giants did it for years. The Patriots guys aren't all firsts.
