Three towns completely underwater in Bergen County along Hackensack River (Little ferry), lots of water rescues. Seaside park Amusement Park is mostly in water, and the barrier portions of Jersey shore underwater. Some areas won't be the same for a long time. Fires all over the place in NJ and NY out of control. I lucked out, besides some trees and branches down, we are okay and have power.
I would not say Katrina because we were warned and a lot of people evacuated when told to. But this is the worse storm in NJ history, the damage is on heard of. Heck railroad cars got washed up onto the NJ Turnpike. I remember Hugo and this was much worse. If people didn't evacuate it could have been so much more deadly. The Atlantic City mayor is in hiding after telling people to stay after Christie told them to leave.
Breezy Point in NY lost over 80 homes to a massive fire. A record high 32.5 foot wave hit New York harbor. This is what is left of the neighborhood at Breezy Point this morning (Over 80 homes gone!)
I didn't know it was a water ride. too soon? Actually is the roller coaster supposed to be beyond the pier?
17 confirmed dead so far. The death toll won't reach Katrina levels, but the financial cost could possibly be worse. The sheer number of people in the path is huge, they said 8 million without power. Think about all the big cities and their surrounding areas in the path: New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Toronto. Then all the smaller cities and areas. Plus the parts of West Virginia and North Carolina, Pennsylvania that not only got a hurricane, but snow as well. Estimate is 60 million people affected in some way in the USA, then more in Canada. Lucked out here too, trees and transformers down everywhere and fire sirens going off every now and then, my neighborhood has power though. A transformer recently blew and they replaced it, maybe since its brand new it withstood it and lots of older ones went down.
This is bad. Personally, I dodged a bullet, I have power and no damage i cant fix myself. Almost everyone I know has no power. I have friends n family with homes under water waiting to be rescued. Friends who's trees crashed into their houses. Townes are in shambles. It's a catastrophe. Sent from my iPhone
At one point rain from the hurricane stretched from South Carolina up to Montreal, Quebec. Big cost going to be in the NY Subways. Salt water and train tracks/equipment doesn't mesh, it will all have to be replaced. some of the signals that prevent trains from colliding will be destroyed.
Subways in nyc flooded and overflowed on to the street. Heard on radio that some parking garages where i live in long beach had been flooded with 10 feet and had cars floating. Still dont know how my condo is since the place was evacuated and im at my parents place a few towns over. If this aint fun i dont know what is. Its bad but its not Katrina bad. At least not where i am...
my fence is gone. roof shingles flew off too. And then there's the N-Train station in my backyard: http://rosetintedvisor.tumblr.com/post/34623407509/the-river-that-was-the-n-train It was a ****ing river.
Wow ****, that Breezy Point neighborhood looks like something after the Japanese tsunami, or like those images of the nazi bombings in France during WW2. I'm hoping it had been evacuated? The stock exchange is closed for the 2nd straight day for the first time since the 1800s due to weather, first shut down since 9/11.
So jealous right now, and this wasn't your hurricane that you southerners are use to, this was that a nasty AND cold ***** of a storm.
I saw a news report this morning that had one of the firefighters being interviewed. He said he helped 25 people get off one of the roofs to a neighboring structure before it caught fire. So the answer is no, there were people still in those homes prior to the storm that didn't heed the evacuation warnings. Now, did they all get out after it caught fire? I don't know.
some photos here in RI....the Coast got whacked bad..... about 20M right there in houses gone below...... a whole row of houses gone......vvvvv the dude using a ladder to get into his house....vvvv thing is that really is sad is that Rhode Island is known for having some of the best landscaped beaches in the country, rolling dunes, natural pathways, rockwalls etc etc....it is by no means flat sands like you see in the Caribbean....well it is now.....

Still no power, wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't cold, if you ain't moving around you freeze. Drove by a Hess station, must have been 125 cars in line and then there was the line for people just buying for their generators, line to get coffee at a Dunkin Donuts is over an hour. Been drinking by a campfire at night to keep warm, I have had better times! Obama was good enough to stop by yesterday with Christie, outside the Jersey Shore my town seems to be one of the worst hitm dozens of homes lost to water damage.
My town which is way north of Jersey shore on upstate NY border, has half the town with no power, and they are saying they will get it back between 11/11 and 11/24. I'm sure the Jersey shore will be just as long if not longer without power.
Still no power here either on long island...over 600,000 still without power. No idea when it will be back. I was actually looking forward to work today just to have heat, hot water, internet and lights. Feels like you're living in the stone age when you have none of those and no tv. Havent been back to my own place yet but its never a good thing when FEMA is set up at the supermarket across the street as i heard on the radio. Remember radio? Yeah i hadnt used one in about 7 years either.
For us, 7-10 days. Our substation is still under water, whichr I'm skeptical about. I just finally snatched a generator for $250. Living modestly as one can live under these conditions. The biggest problem is the cold again, especially at night with the little ones. And as bad as I hear it was for Jersey I think the city is terrible, definitely Staten Island, living just minutes from there I can attest they are the forgotten boro in NYC and more importantly a major pain in the *** to get into, you got just three options.
It's very odd, I have friends in Wanaque and your town with no power since Monday. And the other half of your town has power. Same down the shore, my in laws have had no power since Monday, but around the corner does. Some Casinos in AC are opening, and some folks can't get to their homes there. It's all odd, sad, and terrible. Sent from my iPhone
I went two days without hot water once. Our water heater broke. That was hell enough... taking 3 minute cold showers... During the Northridge quake our electricity was out for 2 days (I live about 20 miles west of the epicenter). Can't imagine what you guys are going thru. Are hotels (with generators/electricity) completely booked? If I had no way to a hot shower I'd probably pay $400 a night to stay at a hotel. Do you guys have gas/propane at all?
Wanaque is two towns from me. Gas lines are insane, I waited for 2 hours to fill up my 5 gallon gas can today!
