I'm curious to see what our forum experts think about our O-line play. I know we just Ro sham bo the Jests :up: but I'm getting concerned about the mediocre o-line play. Yes, I realize opponents are stacking the line LOS but there are no holes for our rbs.

I bet Irish looks to re-sign Long AND upgrade a G position with the draft.

I still think we franchise Long. I could see us using a pick in rounds 2 or 3 on an OL.

I think they need a legitimate blocking fullback. I don't think Javorskie Lane or Charles Clay are it.

I think we upgrade both guards in the offseason. I am sure we will see a FA guard brought in at RG....and draft a challenger to push Incognito.

It's a solid young group of guys. No reason to break that up and invest resources that could go towards BPA picks.

you don't need 5 all-pro lineman to win in the playoffs, see the Giants and Packers. you can't disregard teams stacking the line. Until Tannehill starts developing the long ball better to make them pay for stacking the line, they are going to continue to do it.

Who said anything about all pro? I'm just looking for not 'piss poor'. I doubt Jerry or Incognito are even in the top 30 for guards.

As far as the stacking the box argument goes. Teams did that with Ricky and we still ran the ball. We are just getting poor returns from the guards. Plus Jerry is a FA anyways. Go out and get better with a guy more suited for zone blocking. I am talking maybe 1.5 million a year more than Jerry would cost and a 2nd to 4th round pick to challenge Incognito. Not a huge investment for what should hopefully be a solid improvement in play.

Besides with all these picks the team should be going heavy offense. Its the side that needs most of the work.

Edit: hit reply in the wrong lead post...still sorta works for both posts.

I think right now the big problems are Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito, especially in terms of run blocking.

Guard could pretty easily be a BPA pick. It isn't implausible that it could be the BPA in the 1st round.

Not understanding how our line is piss poor with the production Reggie was getting before he got hurt, over 4 yards a carry vs the Jets, and being in the top half of the league in sacks allowed. Reggie is doing this between the tackles too so its not like he's just burning folks. Our line hardly sucks. This is like that "Wag the Dog" movie.

To me Donald Thomas is a bit of an enigma. As was mentioned Reggie averaged A respectable 4.2 a carry, Thomas much less. He does certain things well, which is why he's getting a lot of playing time, but he has a pretty poor YPC average and some of thats on him.

The line play has been fine. one of our strengths. Look at the time our QB's have had to make plays. Part of our issues with our run game as of late, have more to do with our RB's.

O line is not fine. Our guard play is below average. Martin is still a rookie, and his improvement from preseason should give us enough to think he can continue to improve into a solid right tackle. However our guards situation is less than ideal. Both of them have plenty of mental lapses and whiff on blocking assignments often.

Obviously we have plenty more pressing needs than guards, so i'm not going to sit here and endorse drafting an OG with our high picks, but it is certainly a need.

Our offensive line is good enough to be a Super Bowl O-Line. That is my definition of "fine".

That's IF Tannehill is a great QB. A great QB with a quick release can definitely make a mediocre O-line look great. See Dan Marino.

The Pats' line is widely considered the best pass blocking group in the league and the Giants regularly kick their *** all over the place. After a certain point OL becomes a mediocre investment.

I see the right side of the line as remaining a problem. Martin has played better than he did in preseason, but he and Jerry just don't seem to be able to open holes for the running game. Most of the yards in the running game seems to come when the runners run to the left side behind Long, Incognito, and Pouncey.

I thought the line played better earlier in the season than they have played lately, especially in the running game. I think Martin should get better with more experience, I just don't know if Jerry is the answer at RG.
The OL certainly isn't a priority in next years draft, but hopefully they will be able to find a RG in free agency or in the middle rounds of the draft who can come in and take over at RG.

I feel the Dolphins want to sign Long to a new contract. Whether they do or not will depend on how he plays the rest of this season and how much he wants to be paid in his next contract. Long is still one of the better LT's in the NFL, but he hasn't played as effectively over the last two years, as he did his first three years, because of injuries. He obviously will want to be paid as the top OL in the NFL and if the Dolphins don't believe he deserves to be paid that amount of money, it wouldn't surprise me if they let him walk in free agency.

I would love to see them keep Long, but he needs to get back to playing like he did earlier in his career, IMO.
