Hey what happened to our rookie receiver? Is he struggling that much or is the other receivers that much better than he is? He had a good preseason so I thought I would see him on the field by now. Anyone know anything on this?

I think generally rookie WRs are very unlikely to see the field. It is a big transition, as big as any position's. It also appears that the coaching staff isn't going to put anyone on the field until they have a strong grasp of the playbook. I would think thats part of the issue here.

He needs to be precise in his roles and he needs to know all the checks at the line, Tannehill has had four years in this system, he's teaching the vets at this point, Matthews climb is a little steeper I presume because of that and the fact that our team runs more no huddle that anyone in the league, even steeper.

Personally like most of us, we saw some key tangibles that showed in preseason, like strength in the red zone and an ability, just from a small sample size, to be able to be a playmaker on his own.

I think Philbin isn't letting anyone in the system unless the transition is seamless, I respect that Philbin didn't just insert Gafney in the lineup, he's gonna wait until your up to speed with the scheme, which is hyper speed at this point.

Quite frankly I think people got a little ahead of themselves based on some decent production in pre-season games, mostly against back-ups and guys not even on rosters anymore. Not all that uncommon a sight in pre-season.

He has potential, but needs time to learn. As Stringer pointed out, WR is one of the toughest positions to excel at as a rookie. IMO, expectations for this season should be tempered.

His best chance of seeing the field is to ball out on special teams.

Marlon Moore has been on the team for like 12 years now and he's just now finally seeing the field. Matthews just needs some more time just like Marlon Moore.

I also think bro that Coach Philbin didn't want the Jest to see how we would use him before our game with them. It could also be a part of the tweaks that Philbin has asked the coaching staff to make and fix some things.

I hoped we'd have seen him in live action by now, but it appears, at least by the way this staff has handled other players, that he just doesnt know the offense enough right now. He could handle, and execute well enough with a limited playbook in preseason, but now when we're into the full playbook, I just dont think he's up to speed yet compared to the guys in front of him. I think he'll get htere before the end of the year though.

Yeah, you all make a good point. Maybe he will see some action next year when he got the playbook down. I really think he will contribute for years to come.

It's going to be tough for the kid to see the field this year. As Stringer posted earlier, if he couldn't make the game day roster on ST with Moore nursing an injury, it's probably not going to happen. It's not all bad though. He did show some promise in the preseason and beat out the WR drafted in front of him to make the 53.
