You've to be kidding.....before this year started, VD was easily considered a top ten corner in this league. One of the best man on man cover DB's and great in run support. He has issues at times in zone coverages but nothing in his game was weak. Yes, he seemed to have something going on this year in camp but is that really a new thing?? If not for Hardnocks we prob wouldn't heard anything about it. He's always been lazy. To say that now he all of the sudden is worthless is nonsense.

I have said it numerous times on this forum. The reason the Dolphins are a mediocre team is because they have one of the worst secondaries in the NFL. Like Davis or not, he was better than any CB now on the Dolphins, except for Smith. Marshall has been another bust as a free agent signing. I have no idea why Carroll is still in the NFL and no other CB on the team could even make most of the rosters in the NFL.

Until the secondary is upgraded, the Dolphins will remain nothing but a very mediocre team in the NFL.

Instead the Dolphins have been playing with Marshall and Carroll at CB. They have played like the Dolphins have no CB at their position.

Vontae is actually playing terribly and is one of the worst rated corners in the league right now. He has been torched just about every single game.

Our secondary may not be great but Vontae wouldnt be helping.

Who cares, Marshall sucks anyway, now instead of him out there getting torched it will be Carroll or Wilson getting beat left and right.

I haven't watch any of the Colts games, so I will take your word for it. I think that Vontae was completely shocked by the trade and I just don't think he has recovered from the fact the Dolphins got rid of him. I accept that he wasn't playing well in the preseason and he appeared to be out of shape. I just think that with him, it is a maturity issue. I think once he finally matures and realizes that he has the talent to be one of the best CB's in the NFL, he will be. It took his brother several years to mature and Vontae seems to be suffering from the same problems his bother did before his bother finally grew up and stated playing at an All -Pro level.

I understand why the Dolphins traded Vontae, because he just wasn't getting the job done as a member of the Dolphins. I just don't think Marshall or Carroll are an upgrade over Vontae at this time. They are both rated near the bottom of all CB's in the NFL right now.

Trading Vontae, and having Marshall and Carroll as the main remaining CB's opposite Smith, has now made the CB position the biggest area of need on the team, as far as I am concerned.

Are you saying that based on the 2nd round pick obtained via the trade, and the slot it will be by IND record??

Cause, I know we also have a conditional #6 from Indianapolis tied to Vontae but never heard what that equates to or what triggers it. Do you?

it would also be nice if cleveland would be in front as well, since they already used their 2nd rounder in the supplemental draft on josh gordon

yes, every loss improves our slot in the 2nd, pretty sure it's the same for the sixth.

I am more interested in what the conditions are that secure the 6th? If its games played, than getting injured and missing out may not grant us the conditions to secure the 6th. Thats my point. Not the obvious "colts loses" are better for us when it comes to the 2nd round pick thats a lock.

Have you actually watched him play in any of the Indy games or are you going by what others say?

Right now today, PFF rates them overall as Marshall the 78th corner, Davis 83rd and Carroll 87th.
If one goes by coverage rating only, Marshall is 26th, Davis 53rd and Carroll 89th. Out of 99 corners who've played at least 25% of their team's defensive snaps. Davis' coverage rating places him right now between Brandon Carr and Tramon Williams.

IMO, the logical way to look at Davis is his overall body of work in the NFL. From 2009 through 2011, he was our best corner in coverage or in run support. So he had some struggles in training camp...the logical thing to do would be recognize that he does have talent and give him a chance to work his way out of it. To just pull the plug on him and make that trade was a knee jerk reaction IMO.

He has had ONE bad game with Indy, the Bears game. Since then, his overall rating is a +1.6 and his coverage rating is a +2.9.

Actually he had more than just struggles in train camp this year if you hadn't noticed. We are talking about 2009-2011 so if you go back to last year, he drew the ire of the previous staff for showing up hungover, was benched a game. So to call it a knee jerk reaction is quite a leap. The guy is oozing with talent but once it becomes evident the light isnt coming on any time soon, you cash in on that talent/potential while its still there. Let the Colts try to mold him into competent employee. It was a pretty sweet deal as far as I'm concerned. Just because 2 of our corners are injured is no reason to regress back to lamenting the Davis trade.

yeah but I wonder how much Vontae not playing for the colts this week hurts our conditional pick. What were the details on that other pick we got for him? I assume he had to start a certain amount of games.

What some people fail to acknowledge is that even WITH his maturity problems he was a competent employee, and a HELL of a lot more. He was our best cornerback.

I think with our secondary, this might be the best approach to protect them, keep them off the field, but That would require no hurry up, so forget it lol.

Easy to see that Sean Smith is a much better football player than Vontae Davis.
Dictating being pushed. He is a much better CB.

Vonte Davis is also out this week for Indy. It might not have happened if he stayed in Miami, but if he misses games it pushes the trade even more in Miami's favor.

In the Miami Herald this morning, Barry Jackson wrote a column regarding the Dolphins impending free agents. While he pointed out how much it would possibly take to sign all the free agents the Dolphins have on their roster. What I found amazing was how much money the Dolphins will owe Marshall and Carpenter if they are on the roster in 2013.

Marshall will receive $5.8 million dollars and Carpenter will make $3 million dollars. I have absolutely no idea how anyone can think either of these players are worth anywhere close to these salaries. Marshall is a below average player in the secondary and how he signed for this type of money is beyond me.

Carpenter was outstanding during his first two years in the league, but he has been merely average in recent years.

The Dolphins can save a lot more money under the salary cap by cutting these two under performing players and use this extra money to ensure they can sign the free agents on the team who actually deserve to be paid a quality salary. With the $50 million dollars they now have, plus the $8 plus million they would save by cutting Marshall and Carpenter. The Dolphins would have plenty of money to sign all their top free agents, along with another kicker, a few free agents from other teams in the NFL, and all their 2013 draft picks.

I would much rather see the Dolphins sign, Long, Starks, Harline, Bush, and Smith, than see them keep either Marshall or Carpenter next season.

Since the exact terms of the deal weren't made public, it is difficult to know exactly what is required for the Dolphins to obtain that additional 6th round selection from the Colts in the 2013 draft. Usually these conditionally picks are contingent on a player making the team, or in the case of a player like Davis, him playing a certain number of plays during the season. Depending on how long he is out because of his injury, the Dolphins could end up losing the additional pick from the Colts.

Everyone keeps talking about how much money Marshall is making, and how he makes to much. People forget that he has been a really solid player the past few years. His 4 games here he hasn't been great. He will be fine....

Hopefully he will fine for another team in 2013. HE IS NOT WORTH THE FIVE POINT EIGHT MILLION DOLLARS THE DOLPHINS ARE SUPPOSE TO PAY HIM NEXT YEAR. He has not been a solid player for the Dolphins. He has in fact been one of the problems in the secondary.
