Should Reggie Bush Get a Contract Extension from the Dolphins?

A decent one, if he can stay healthy and prove his durability the rest of the season.

It's better to wait until later in the season. A 6-8 game streak isn't an optimal amount of information to go on. If he's performing very well for the next few weeks you can intervene before he's compiled a full years worth of stats and hopefully not buy at the high point, and if he isn't performing as well you've protected yourself.

No. Miami doesn't have to sign him. They can just franchise him for another year. Very little risk involved that way. They don't owe Reggie anything. They gave him a chance to start by getting him out of New Orleans.

Yea I think they should. Personally I think franchising him is a smack in the face. You have to keep your talent and show production gets rewarded. They resigned Cam based on production, they need to sign Reggie.

 

I'd re-sign him around week six or so. Unless his demands are super reasonable, then I'd sign him right now.

 

Ireland is sitting pretty at the moment because of Miller. However, I saw an article where Ireland and Reggie's agent were holding preliminary talks.

You just know Ireland has his agent on speed dial. Too many more kick *** games by Reggie and he prices himself out of Miami.

The guy just broke the Dolphin record for consecutive 100 yard games. Nobody is going to be upset if you pull the trigger on an extension.

I don't think Reggie will slack off. I know he's an injury risk. Better sooner than later in this instance...

 

Obviously it depends on the price but I'd pay Bush $5-6M per year for the next 3-4 years considering both Thomas and Miller will be finishing their rookie deals by the time Bush's extension is up.

So many great players got signed right before the season started, when you know you have a blue chip player that has market appeal, and great work ethic, imo, you've seen a big enough sample size to break down the talent, and injury should not play a role, the player is healthy, and has been for over a year..Gronkowski is injury prone no?..

Sign him, and start marketing his ***...literally, market the *** of the man...lol...Market the man..I could make a fortune producing a television show following that football player.

No, not now. RB is such a fungible position, I'd only re-sign Reggie AFTER you've re-signed Starks, Long (or franchised), and Fasano. I'd maybe consider adding Hartline to that list as well. Lamar Miller functioned just as well as Reggie, albeit with fewer carries last week. I know I'm going to be in the minority, but I don't think there's anything overly outstanding that Reggie Bush provides as a running back that you couldn't get out of Lamar Miller and/or someone else next year.

Absolutely true, however, you've got an opportunity to field the most explosive tandem in the NFL. Both those guys are savvy, natural RB's. RB's can make an awful OL look great and vise versa.

 

This would be a tough decision for me. On the one hand, the guy has been the best player on this football team over his last 8-10 games or so. Resigning him sends the message that you will reward your best players.

On the other hand, this is a position where you have to take into account replacement value. Would we get more value out of Lamar Miller over the next 3-4 years at his contract level vs signing Reggie Bush to a contract that will absorb a lot more cap room over the next 3-5 years?

 

Yeah, but the situation is that we have tons of cap space. But even if we didn't, I'd cut Odrick before Bush.

 

Not only has he been a great player for the team but he also embodies EVERYTHING you would want in a player. To take it a step further if they don't make a hard push to resign him it tells me all the talk of wanting character guys who treat being a football player like a job is nothing but lip service.

There's a lot of cap space. But there's more than just Reggie Bush to bring back. You've got Jake Long, Randy Starks, Anthony Fasano, Brian Hartline and Sean Smith all as free agents as well. I think you're going to bring back at least four of those five. At the moment, Sean Smith would be the only one I'd consider letting walk as I think you can upgrade over him via the draft. But even then, I think he's got the makings of a nice #2 CB (I still think Miami is lacking that true lockdown guy). None of those positions are as fungible as RB is.

 

Sign him now. He has proven his worth so far IMHO

 

Reggie Bush was the best player in this offense last season and it has continued this season.
Doesn't anyone understand we drafted Ronnie Brown 3 overall and he was a bust and now we have legitimate running back who wants it.
This fanbase continues to chase their tail if you want Reggie to not be here.
Some people wanted to trade him. Ridiculous.

 

Can't extend a player in a contract year iirc. He has to go to free agency.

 

we drafted ronnie 2nd overall....on the other hand i voted yes in resigning him, im still torn about the length of the deal, he is 27 right now so a 3 year deal is the max i would offer

 

If I can avoid him hitting FA then that's what I do, with the exception, if his demands are just crazy. He has been a true leader on this team, we have a lot of cap space next year, and he has been just plain exciting for this team. I may take some heat for this but with 5 picks in the 1st 3 rounds, the player that worries me and I would consider letting walk is Jake Long. He has been injured a lot, and even though he has played through a lot, IMHO he has been average at best last year and so far this year. And with one of those picks there should be a good tackle available. Shine if someone offered me a 1 right now for Long I just may pull the trigger. I know good thing I'm not in charge lol

 

I accidentally voted yes...meant to vote no. My reasoning is that in his 7 yrs in the league only last year was 'good' and of course so far this year. I am somewhat torn because he's a special player that hasn't always played very special. He's proven he can be that upper level player, but simply doesn't always play that way. While we all love his production form last year, that really was more like part of last year that he was at that level...particularly the last half of the season. So far this year, we have one game that he's excelled in and one that he was just so-so in...If they do re-sign him, I'd like it to be for a reasonable price with lots of incentives in there...but it won't be...he'll get the money and then all bets are off...

I think when looking at Miami's free agents for next season, you are going to have to monitor Michael Egnew's progress over the course of the season. Joe Philbin has already stated that he has improved a lot in practice. Now, he may not be to the point where they want to activate him yet, but I figure he will become active in the next 2-3 games.

I got to thinking about this and wondered if there was another situation where a third round pick tight end didn't play in the first two games and got very few offensive snaps overall during his rookie season. I found that tight end.

Jermichael Finley in 2008. Jermichael was inactive in his first two games and played only 87 pass snaps his entire rookie season.

I think it is entirely possible that Miami goes into the offseason thinking that they can roll with Michael Egnew going into 2013. If you look at the way Mike Sherman used his tight ends at Texas A&M and the way Green Bay used their tight ends when they had a healthy Finley when Philbin was their offensive coordinator, I think this coaching staff will view Egnew as more of the type of tight end they want -- i.e. a tight end that they can flex out and line up in the backfield at times more than they put him on the line.

Well, when Green Bay had a lot of trouble with the pass rush a couple of years ago, their response to it was to spread the field.

At Texas A&M, Ryan Tannehill played in a lot of 4 and 5 wide sets in 2011, and he was one of the least sacked and pressured quarterbacks in college football. It's hard to say if that was because of the spread sets or if it was because he had two potential first round offensive tackles blocking for him.

 

True, and hopefully he stays in his prime for a long time. I'm just wary of having a RB (any RB) with a long contract in a position where play can deteriorate so quickly. Basically I hope any contract we sign him to has a get-out clause that doesn't hurt the team's cap too badly when Bush and the Dolphins part ways.
