My not so obvious positives and negatives from today's game

Well it was a good win. The first of the year and I'm happy for it. The sun came out at just the right time and the west coast Raiders fell apart. I've read a few comments about the game and this my attempt to point out a few things that may have been missed.

    Positives

Cameron Wake was in full beast mode today. And that was to be expected going against the Raiders soft right tackles. They couldn't protect Palmer last week and couldn't stop Wake from getting to the quarterback consistently today. The game would have been over earlier had the referees realized what a holding penalty looks like.

Lamar Miller, for his first game ever, scoring a td was a nice way to top it off. Did he struggle on some pass protection stuff as expected? Yes. But ultimately it didn't affect the outcome of the game. He rushed 10 times for 65 yards, with a long of 19 yards. That's a real nice afternoon. And he really ran patiently on his touchdown, setting up the blocks and allowing a run blitzing backer to take himself out of the play.

Mike Pouncey is our best offensive linemen in just his second season. This is quite an accomplishment. He's dedicated himself in the offseason to getting a better anchor under him and it's showed. Where was Richard Seymour today? Of course give credit to Incognito and Jerry as well for that. But Pouncey continues to impress me and just like last week where the OL got some of the blame on the tipped passes, they should get some credit for not having any today (there was one deflected but I'm not counting it). As Cartman would say, I'll do what I want.

Marcus Thigpen continues to show why he's our best return man in a very long time. He didn't get any reps on kickoffs but his punt returns were solid. He gets up field in a hurry and doesn't waste time dancing east and west.

Sean Smith. This one could be controversial. This isn't about his first half performance, which honestly was poor. Fortunately Palmer threw the ball too late to McFadden at the end of the first half or that flat pass would have been six points. Smith didn't attack the receiver early enough. But it's his second half performance that helped the defense corral the Raiders passing game and limit Palmer to just three points. He was aggressive on multiple occasions on passes that he may have struggled on previously. Sometimes you make adjustments at half time as a player and get it corrected. I believe Sean was coached up at halftime to be more aggressive on the shorter routes. He's got safety help over the top usually. If we're going to be anywhere near successful this season Sean has to be more like he played in the second than the first half. Got to be aggressive and let his size dominate the ball in the air. By my unofficial count he had 3 passes defended in the second half.

I also think Karlos Dansby improved enough in the second half to warrant a brief mention as a positive. I said brief...

Same with Misi... Did make a great play going thru the fullback to take out the runner. He's been a welcome site this year. And if our defense all had the same heart that he had, we'd be unstoppable.

And I thought Nolan Carroll came on and played okay in place of an injured Marshall (back). He didn't get victimized enough to affect the game. And I can only see that as a positive CONSIDERING where he's been the last couple of seasons. He's clearly getting comfortable out there. And yes I do believe he was held on the touchdown to Goodson.

Last but not least... Reshad Jones. That's right.. Reshad mother****ing Jones. If nothing else it's because he had the INT today. But he was better than just that INT. He was blitzing on multiple occasions like a rabid dog. I mean how often do we blitz a safety only to have it picked up the majority of the time. It seemed that whenever Jones blitzed, he was running free. Kudos to Coyle on designing pressure plays that actually work. Now we'll see if that holds up when we play the likes of the Jets and Pats who always seem to pickup our blitzers with regularity. Next to Chris Clemons (more on him below), Reshad Jones looks all pro. He tackled well today IMO and continues to progress as a safety in this defense... which has to be nothing short of encouraging because we have bugger all next to or behind him.

Did you know that Bess, Starks and Fields were today's captains? Looks like we are changing this on a weekly basis. I think I like this.

Did you also know that we failed to kick a field goal today? How about a huge FIST PUMP to the offense and coaching staff for getting us in the endzone instead of settling for field goals. Last season, only one time did we not attempt a field goal (Carpenter happened to be out for it) when we scored 35 on the Bills. Would be really nice to be the team with the fewest FG attempts inside of 40 yards this year and an above average redzone TD scoring %.

Last positive for me were the fans. Sure some fans booed going into the first half. But those boos turned into chants of Reggie Reggie Reggie in the fourth quarter. The ones that went to the game today deserved this win, they went when everyone was saying they shouldn't. They believed when many didn't. It was nice for Reggie Bush to give a lucky fan a game ball.

    Negatives

There has to be negatives. I know I know... Why can't we just be happy and content with the victory? Because that's not how the NFL works. You know damn well the staff will pour over the video tape and find things that we need to improve on. It's Jets week afterall, and we are going to have to be more consistent for four quarters to beat them. Which is something we haven't done the first two games.

Lets start with the big one. Jake Long. He continues to struggle in my view in the pass protection. He's getting beat outside AND inside. Is the knee bothering him more than we know? You could clearly see Philbin screaming LETS GO JAKE at one point in today's game. That is just something we NEVER saw from Sparano and his staff. Jake has been the pillar of consistency his entire career. He's had poor games before, poor moments rather. But I haven't seen him play this poorly back to back in well.. ever. I know some will question whether or not he's a fit in this scheme. I think that's bull **** honestly. If you have a Pro Bowl player, there should be no question whether he's a scheme fit (unless he's someone like Demeco Ryans). I'm concerned and I hope he picks it up... for Tannehill's sake.

Chris Clemons... probably my most obvious player on the list. His play on the touchdown pass to Goodson was nothing short of atrocious. He tiptoed to the sidelines and was clearly caught flat footed when Carroll didn't make the tackle. As a safety, you just can't allow that. You can't take that poor of an angle only to get washed out by the bunch in front of you as you take your angle to the sideline. I don't know if Troy Nolan is better... but he deserves some reps.

Charles Clay... I agree with the overall sentiment that he's struggling this year. It's not good. He doesn't seem to fit in this offense. He's lost his job as a full back. And is playing mostly in a 2nd tight end role. He did have a catch today. But made it more of a negative than a positive by heading backwards not forwards. That's not what you want from your tight end. He should be blowing people up and running over them. He's not big enough to affect the middle of the field. And this will become increasingly more apparent as the season goes on. We need guys that can catch the ****ing ball in traffic across the middle AND go vertical when they need to using their height to dominate the ball in the air. Clay is not that kind of player. I fear he doesn't last the season. Which is a shame because he had some good moments last year. Hopefully Michael Egnew pulls his rookie head out of his rookie *** and gets some quality work in practice leading to game reps. But he is just a rookie. Clearly a developmental rookie. And one that cannot nor should not be depended on this season. That's why using a third round pick on him last draft was a mistake at this point in time. He's the only drafted rookie (perhaps rookie overall) not to be active at least once this season.

It's a negative that Fasano scored a touchdown today because it means I can't complain about him... oops I think I just did.

Kevin Burnett really got victimized by Aulsberry (sp?) today. Just absolutely posterized on one play in particular. He's really got to pickup his game as we go into next week. He had an opportunity for a negative play on a couple of occasions and missed tackles. He gives up too easily at the point of attack.

That's it... on to the Jets and Tim Tebow on punt coverage teams.

Disagree on the fans, if they made HALF the noise on defensive third downs as they did chanting for Reggie we'd have a nice home field advantage. But they don't.

    Otherwise great write up.

Reshad Jones looks vastly improved this year. He flies around the field and is a good tackler. He is really coming on and is proving that patience can pay off.

I agree for the most part. I thought Nolan Carroll actually did really well coming in for Marshall. I thought Dansby was pretty good for most of the game but he took a really bad angle on the long TD and had a couple other iffy moments. I don't agree on Sean Smith. I think he's been the same player he's been for most of his career save for the improved tackling. He's really good some of the time and pretty mediocre at other times. He did close the game strong which is good to see, but he's still giving up too many completions.

The frustrating part of today for me is that many of the players we hoped would finally break through this year aren't doing that. Jones is taking positive steps and Hartline's play is encouraging, but Smith, Charles Clay, Chris Clemmons, and even really Devone Bess are showing to be exactly what we've seen from them previously. Smith is a solid corner who makes some good plays but lets some up as well. Clay is a good athlete and could be a solid #2 TE, but he doesn't look like the weapon we thought he'd be. Clemmons is a backup safety. And Devone Bess is a good slot WR, but nothing more. And I think that's kind of an indictment on Jeff Ireland not necessarily even for signing/drafting them, but for going into the season without contingency plans if they didn't take that next step. It's early and hopefully as the season goes on they will take that step, but from what we've seen so far in the pre-season and in these first two games I'm not going to hold my breath.

Dansby was one of the people dousing Coach Joe in Gatorade.

I think that shows the reports of dissension in the ranks to be overblown. It also makes the questioning of Coach Joe's demeanor to be wrong as well.

I was dissapointed in Javorski Lane today. I saw him miss a few blocks or not block at all. Wish we would of had some plays called designed for him. I believe he was suppose to have a pass designed for him where it was a block and release pass route but he screwed that up doing a half *** block while tripping and falling.

I really think the offense just didn't need Bess this game, no indictment in him imo, I know he's quicker this year..they'll get'em involved and he flash another level you haven't seen yet.

I'd like to see the payers ask for the fans help now, openly..tell them what you want, they'll get inspired..more showed up that I though would of so I give those folks props, their really good fans.

The offense needs everyone they can get. Bush and Hartline had a great game, but you can't count on that every game. I'm disappointed that Bess two weeks in a row didn't run his route at the depth he needed to at a key moment. Last week it was a yard shy of the endzone and this week it was 2 yards shy of a 1st on third down. I'm not overly down on him, but I just think he is who he is: a good slot WR, but not someone who's going to get it done on his own.

Remember that had it not been for the blatant tackle by the defense there would have been a HUGE gain for Bess, like 40-50 yards.

That's what would have happened in that play i was talking about that never happened because Lane tripped on his on feet. I am upset that, that was the only pass play I saw that was called for him. We need to give him more chances to be him! If we do, I believe we all would be happier, much more than we will be dissapointed. Give him 5 of those plays a game and we will use that nick name atleast 3 or 4 times!

I still have not rewatched the game, but I think Fasano deserves props for the block on the RT run, if I am not wrong...

we still don't have a second pass rush threat and that force us to be very blitz happy some times

Tannehill played good enough, no turnover, and confirmed what we alrady know: he is very very very good throwing on the run and throwing to the sidelines, but he also confirmed in some occasione some little accuracy issues. But again, like last week, he didn't seem to get rattled when things went south and our O coldn't move the ball and get firts downs, he keeped staying cool, in the pocket, and went back to Hartline (what a game, for him!!! and he seemed to talk a lot on the field lol)

Bush is a true best, hoping he get the right praise and recognition on the media

Our D ain't bad, but I think is very inconsistent (and if Palmer throw at the right time the ball, on the end of firts half, we could have a totally different game)

    Paul Soliai is a beast

ps no words for Dansby and Clemons on the Raiders TD.... just shame

ah, and it really seemd the Wake was holded the all day, but maybe this is the homer in me (I am honest, I don't follow passrusher on other team with the same attention, so I am not sure if this is standard or some special treatment for the Kraken)

I think wr really have to address the saftey position this offseason. This defense could really look sick and get a lot of turnovers if the safties weren't a second slow. Hopefully one good one from the draft and one good one from FA.

I just watched the NFL Rewind and those of you who think Jake Long had a bad game are crazy.

He had two back to back bad plays that the announcers noticed, and consequently you noticed. I don't think he will be graded with a pressure outside of that series. The play that Tannehill took a pretty big hit on was Lamar Miller's fault, it was his block that Long intervened on.

Sean Smith needs to put this in-game streakiness issue to bed and be consistent the whole game from start to finish. He had a stretch against the Texans where if you knew nothing about him you wouldn't even have him on your roster, and then he had a stretch where he very nearly shut down one of the two or three best receivers in football, single-handedly.

This week isn't up. Last week he was +2.3 pass blocking, and not listed as giving up any sacks, pressures, or hits. He just had the holding penalty vs. JJ Watt, and that's all anyone remembers.

You can't judge a tackle accurately off the couple snaps you notice him getting beat.

Problem is, I'm not sure the Dolphins have anyone that is any better. I don't know much about Troy Nolan, but he was cut so I don't know that we can expect much; and I think Jimmy Wilson has to stay at corner for right now with the Dolphins so thin there and not knowing what's up with the Marshall injury.

Nolan isn't a workout warrior. He doesn't run really spiffy 40 times or jump through the roof on the vertical. He does show ball skills and better than average instincts though. He's more the type to beat you with his smarts than he is with his athleticism, IMO.
Texans fans on their forums were almost totally negative about his being cut.

I think Reggie bush could of run for a lot more yards in the game, I know he played well and had some big gains but the first half something either wasn't right or Reggie had a bad first half from an instinctive standpoint..

There were many holes and lanes that he left on the field..any thoughts as to what you saw in the first half?

Looked to me like he just got winded. On the first series of the game, after he picked up the first on his 4th-5th carry, he seemed to be asking out but the coaches had him stay on the field to run a play fake. He just exerts so much energy on each run. If he hits 3 or 4 good runs in a row, he needs a breather. If Thomas had been active, or the staff had more trust in Miller at that point, I think he's given a play off and it's not something we notice.

Posted it in the other thread, but they credited a sack and an additional hit on Long. He had a positive(+.03) grade in pass protection for the game, which means his negative play was essentially those back to back plays in the same series, and was likely quite good otherwise to have still had a positive grade. Run blocking was +1.1.

Yeah, basically. This one is even stranger because this wasn't a bad game for Long, it was two players that the announcers happened to point out.

Agreed. He was indecisive on a few runs but overall I thought he ran well and the blocking was tremendous, especially in the 2nd half. Conversely, the Raiders, who IMO have a better back, chose not to challenge our run defense.

A lot of the harping on our secondary is undeserved IMO. What I saw was a defense that was schematically inclined to prevent McFadden from being a factor while accepting that Palmer would complete his fair share of throws. So long as the DBs didn't get beat deep they were doing their job.

Great job by the OP by the way. My only disagreements are on Long and Clemons. Long had a couple bad plays but a good game overall. Clemons was the guy holding down the deep middle while Jones was used in run support and pass rushing. Nothing spectacular from CC but I thought he did what he was asked to do. On the long TD I sa Dansby take a bad angle and I saw Carrol jump inside, which was a cardinal sin in that spot. Clemons (and everyone else) was pursuing from the inside out so Carrol should have forced the play back towards his help. Instead he allowed himself to get pinned inside and gave the sideline away, which resulted in the TD.

IMO Paul Soliai deserves major props. He was immovable in run support and got some good push up the middle on passing downs. Dude is a friggin beast.

Yeah it seems their keepin Clemons back and lettin RJ come up and play near the line, that's cool, we're protecting deep while trying to let our safety play behind the Los, leaving us open in the intermediate..I didn't see any deep passes completed, and did see Rj makin a bit of noise..Rj was a kid I wrote a lot about him and his improvement from camp, just a matter of time before we see that jump in play, how good that will be?, we'll see..he's got size, he's got a great physique, and we've seen some explosiveness on the close, had a pick, jumped a route, made some plays in run support, little blitz pressure, gonna watch him closely in this game, Sanchez loves the play action, is very good at it, and gets his best timed throws off of it..big game for Rj to see what we got there..That's an Ireland pick, and we should watch him close, so far, pretty damn good considering what kind of camp he had.

The non-development of Jimmy Wilson is one of my biggest disappointments this season.

It's like John Kerry... All he had to do was not be so bad he lost the election to a guy people disliked.

All Wilson had to do was not be worse than Clemons. And somehow Jimmy inspires less faith than CC and his bad angles and non tackling, no interceptions hole at free safety.

ZacharyTaylor Thomas would have more impact back there.
