Agreed. I gave up my season tickets after years of futility. Now when I want to go to a game I buy em on Stub Hub for way less than face value

Being out of market, I can't speak for the in-stadium experience - but the casual Dolphins fan is still pretty damn intelligent in my experience.

I don't see NEARLY the knee-jerk reactions and stupidity that you do in other markets. There are always SOME stupid fans, but there seems to be a much lower percentage of them for the Dolphins.

Not saying fans aren't negative or that the orange seats on Sunday aren't an issue - but just in spending most of my Sundays in sports bars interacting with fans of other teams, the casual Dolphins fan is arguing about the nickel corner while the casual fan of a lot of teams can't name more than 5-6 players.

To me, all of the losing and disappointments have sapped a lot of enthusiasm for the Dolphins.

Much of the nonsense comes strictly from that place, no playoff wins in over a decade, several losing seasons in a row etc.

I also think the team lacks stars which helps to ride out that stuff, but DroneBall was Parcellian, so we had drones for yrs.

I've lived in South Florida for 50 years and have been a fan of the Dolphins since 1966. I attended home games as a season ticket holder for well over 30 years. You are correct that many of the former season ticket holders have chosen to move out of South Florida as they have grown older. Younger fans did not come in and fill the void by buying season tickets. This and the fact the Dolphins have been basically a lousy team for over a decade has caused local interest in the Dolphins to swoon in recent years.

As you so rightly pointed out. The vast majority of transplants to SF are not fans of the Dolphins. They still root for the team from the area they relocated from and the only time most of these individuals attend a game involving the Dolphins, is when the team they actually root for is in town. I remember attending games at the Orange Bowl in the early 1970's when well over 70,000 people were in the stands every time the Dolphins played at home. You rarely saw a large group of fans from other teams attending games in Miami at that time. Ninety nine percent of the fans at the home games in the 70's and early 80's were there to cheer for the Dolphins.

In recent years as the Dolphin fans have moved away and others have stopped attending games, more and more of the fans in the stadium on game day are there to root on the visiting team. In fact when the Jets and the Patriots are in town, it is hard to determine which team actually has more fans in the stadium, the Dolphins, or one of these other teams.

It is up to Ross to turn this organization around or else he needs to sell the team. I don't see interest picking up again in the Dolphins until all those fans who have stopped watching the games are convinced that Ross has a clue, when it comes to running an NFL team. The Dolphins need to turn this around immediately, or they will just continue to lose more and more fan support.

I would say the fan base has been pretty much band wagon jumpers with some hard core fans. When the front office gets a good product out there the band wagoneers will be back in force and claim they never left.So I guess I choose ricicule and embarass.

I don't think any of those categories fit. I think the fan base goes as the organization goes.

And, I think the way to describe the fan base is frustrated and irritated. But, by and large, fan bases are fan bases. There are smart fans; ignorant fans; fans that are critical; fans that are positive; etc.

That's easily explained away by the Pats opener last year was on MNF where the Texans opener was a 1pm game on Sunday

No, it is easily explained by the fact the Dolphins continue to lose fan interest as the team continues to be one of the worst teams in the NFL. Several games were played a 1:00 pm ET last Sunday, yet the ratings for the Dolphins were the lowest for any local ratings in the ENTIRE NFL.

Ridiculous and embarassing, but I've felt this way for many years. Seriously, I get along better with my local Bills fans.

I moved here from northern New Jersey in 1974. Before I moved, I was the kind of rabid Jets fan who went to games when no tickets were available except standing room. But it made no sense to be a Jets fan in Miami and see them only twice a year -- no cable, no satellite, no Internet back then. Traded myself to Miami and never looked back. Today I'm a Jets hater with the zeal of the converted.

Today, though, I would imagine that more fans of other teams who come here hang on to their former allegiances. All they need to do is buy Sunday Ticket and read or blog about their team on the Internet. Combine that with a perennial loser and I think that translates to less fannies in the seats.

As someone whos also a diehard Cubs fan, Im not sure if thats an insult or not...

But anyways, even when the team was in the middle of almost 15 years without a losing season in the 90s and early 2000s, the local fan base had a lousy reputation. As someone who grew up in Steeler country as a Dolphin fan, its always amazed me how apathetic the Miami fans seem to be.Where Im from, football is life, and is the ONLY thing most people do on weekends in the fall. As Ive gotten older, and moved around a bit, Ive realized thats perhaps the exception, and not the norm. Here in Virginia, Ive met only a handful of people who are diehard NFL fans in eight years, and all of them are originally from other places.

I couldnt live in South Florida - I really, really dont fit in for 1000 reasons, but if I did, Id most certainly be a season ticket holder and attend every game, even if they went 1-15 every season. Thank goodness for Sunday ticket and DVR, where I can now watch every play of every game, even if I have to work on Sunday.

As to JRS, I dont see it as all that different from others, personally. Ive been there twice, and my seats (upper deck, around the 40), were comperable to the ones I had at games in Carolina, Cincinatti and Pittsburgh. Hoping to go to New Orleans next year to see them there. Ironically, we had a much better time at the away games than the last Dolphins game we were at in 2007, when the disgusting Raider fans surrounding us swore, smoked and were generally asses the whole game.

It's just like any other fanbase.......... the mature/patient fans...... the maniacal die-hards.........and ofcourse the crybabies/fairweathers. Unfortunately the crybabies get all the attention. It relieves them to appoint blame when something isnt going right. There's always a bad guy, whether its Wayne,Jimmy,Dave,Rick,Fiedler,Nick,Cam,Steve,Tuna,Henne,Henning,Sparano,Ireland...... it doesnt matter, as long as there's someone to point the finger at. And don't worry....... there always will be.

I would say Dolphins fans come across as crybaby primmadonna's for the most part..... Jets fans are maniacal, moronic even...Patriots fans seem the most mature and patient these days. Bills, well they're just happy to have a team.

How can we change that perception ?

" When (current-scapegoat) is gone, we will " ......They'll probably say.......

Hopefully this thread will bring awareness to those contributing to our lackluster rep..... you know who you are.

Funny how the Patriot fans are considered mature and patient now that they have had one of the best teams in the entire league for over a decade. I remember when they were cellar dwellers for years and the fan base in New England was just as unhappy and complaining about their organization, as many Dolphin fans are today. I guess having one of the best QB's in the NFL and the best coach in the NFL over the last decade, has allowed the Patriot fans to somehow become more mature and patient.

On the Jets forum. I observe that the fans comments are in direct relationship as to whether the Jets are winning or losing. When they are winning, everything is fine in the Jets universe. When they are losing, the fans want to get rid of Sanchez and fire Ryan. There was a great deal of complaining on the Jets forum when Sparano was hired as the teams new OC. After the game last week, Sparano is now seen by many Jet fans as some type of offensive genius. The Jet fans whined just as much about their previous OC, Schottenheimer, as Dolphin fans did about the Dolphins OC's in recent years.

The Bills fans were the first fans I ever remember wearing bags over their heads at home games to show their disgust with how their team was performing on the football field. Just like in Miami, Bill fans show up when their team is winning and they stay at home when their team is playing badly. They are certainly a lot happier fans when they are winning than when their team is losing.

I really don't see any difference in the fan bases of any of the teams in the AFC East. The fans of each of these teams are very supportive of their teams when they are winning and they are upset and whining when their teams are not playing well over a long period of time. In reality, the Dolphin fan base is really no different than the fan bases of the vast majority of the teams in the NFL, and exactly like the fan bases of the rest of the team in the AFC East.

I have seen that for over 40 years. Win, and they are simply magnificent... as in '72 -73. Two years later, there were as many cheering losses as there were cheering the wins. And thus it has ever been. That is one reason I never went to games in my youth. Before I became civilized, I was certain I would be arrested for feeding some idiot a knuckle sandwich for cheering for a player hurt, a bad play by one of the players, or being similarly obnoxious - by my own definition of obnoxious. BTW - if you asked my wife if I was civilized yet while watching a game in my house, she would laugh in your general direction...

It was the Saints fans. They started doing it in 1980 after the team was 1-14. A radio announcer named Buddy D put the fan base up to it. They called themselves the Aints. The Bills fans just thought it was a good idea and copied it.
