http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/08/31/tori-gurley-waived-by-packers/ A lot of guys here have said they want Gurley. I'm not a big fan of us picking him up, though it probably happens.
Tori Gurley Second Year UDFA/Practice Squad 2011, 6'4" 232lbs, 35" arms, 9 3/4" hands, 40 Time: 4.56, 33.5 Vertical, 118" broad http://www.packers.com/team/roster/Tori-Gurley/e4136c36-84c4-4e19-ae24-223bbaa860b1 Former basketball player. NFL Combine Profile To me, he's not as good a passing mismatch as Egnew at tight end vs linebackers, but may actually be a better blocker as a compromise if you get ten more pounds onto him and move him to TE. Maybe that's dumb, a la Ernest Wilford, but I just don;t see this guy being a great player at WR. I don't think he sounds better than Roberto Wallace. What jumps out at me looking at video are his stiff, un-fluid hips and lower lumbar.
True. Speaking of the Rams, I'd consider having our medical guys look at Danario Alexander's bad knee. Wonder if it's not worth taking him, IR-ing him for a year to get healthy.
Right, but the guys we've decided to keep may be better developmental projects than guys who are getting cut from other teams. Rishard Matthews looks better to me than this guy, for example. Now it's possible that a team that's loaded could cut somebody who could be a better developmental project, but either way, I think we're going to get guys who can contribute this year only through trade.
I've had my doubts about Gurley and Borel, whom everyone seemed to talk about way too much. Boykin impressed me more in preseason. I'm in no hurry to be all over Gurley or Borel. Mardy Gilyard and Marvin McNutt are interesting releases. TE Chase Ford, LB Ryan Rau and DE Montee Taylor make it five players the Eagles released that would interest me. OL Tom Compton released by the Redskins would interest me. I think TE Evan Moore and FB Emil Igwenagu being released are very interesting, although their roles are no longer positions of need, and so I ultimately would not be interested. Chase Ford has become a decent blocker now so he's more of an all-around TE which is why I'd be interested in him more than a pseudo-WR like Evan Moore.
My thing with Borel is, I like him... but he's more an inside receiver and that's not our great need. Don't know much about McNutt or Boykin. No, that's a lie. Know nothing at all about McNutt and Boykin. lol Out of the guys you listed as interesting, do you have strong enough feelings about any that you think we absolutely should go get him?
Chase Ford over Jeron Mastrud, Ryan Rau to help fill in the LB unit, DE Montee Taylor (unless someone better gets cut)...and I'd keep Mardy Gilyard in a holding pattern pending the Anthony Armstrong trade.
I think they're only set to keep 3 TEs, and Mastrud won't be one of them. I'll go look at some video of Chase Ford though. LBs def need depth, but mainly at OLB. I'll look at Montee Taylor too. At this point, all I hope for in a DE is a guy with the physical quickness and explosiveness to get to the edge, the strength to anchor... but some mental and technique flaws... since those are correctable. You know, a guy who gets caught up inside instead of staying on the outside shoulder vs the run (assuming they're funnelling the RB inside), a guy who does have hand strength but doesn't use them as well as he needs to, a guy who has only inside or outside moves but could flourish if you expand his repertoire. Those kind of guys. I GOTTA see quick enough, explosive enough lower body movement though.
Jeron Mastrud is currently on the roster, though they're still cutting guys...so if they keep him, yeah I'd grab Ford over him. Montee Taylor gets the outside shoulder. He's got great frame to him, gives him core strength and also helps him unlock like a spring and get the edge on the outside. That body of his gives him a high ceiling. He's not going to impress you with lateral quickness. But he's strong.
Montee Taylor http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/7731/monte-taylor Not fast, but not horribly slow. Wonder about his 10 yard split, shuttle and would love to know the vertical and BP. PRO DAY http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=96889&draftyear=2012&genpos=DE I mean, he doesn't jump off the page at you with any of those. Out of interest, here is how his measurables compare to Shelby, the guy I feel is the second best outside pass rusher we have other than Wake (**** that's not a good state of affairs). Derrick Shelby When you start looking at it that way, it's mixed. Monte has a better 10-yard split, but less explosive vertical than Shelby. Monte broad jumped further than Shelby, but Shelby had better cone and shuttle times. It leaves me unsure of who's the better athlete, but given the quick pass rushing ends I've seen on those Eagles teams, I'm inclined to bring Monte in for a look. Doesn;t sound like a kid who can rely on physical gifts to get to the QB, so it'll come down to how well his position coach thinks he can develop the kids toolset and make up for his current deficiencies.
Strength is the one thing I didn't see on Montee... and BP doesn't tell the full story on strength anyways. His broad jump is a good hint that he has some power in that base. Sounds like he is worth a look, but if he won't impress with lateral quickness, then we're looking at the SOLB having to soak up a lot of lead blocks on runs to that side. At any rate, pass rush is our main concern, not wide runs. Do you think he would have any chance of challenging Odrick for snaps at DE during this season, or is this a long term developmental guy?
When your options are to watch a guy on the field or to look at his pro day stats, choose the field. You have to watch Montee Taylor play football to see what is intriguing about him.
Did Tim Fugger do anything of note in preseason or is this based on pro day workouts? Honest question.
Pro day and the couple Vandy games I saw. I didn't see him in the preseason (nor was I looking for him). I don't know Montee Taylor at all honestly, which is why I'd prefer Fugger. Familiarity wins! Edit: I do know he was trying to play 3-4 OLB with the Colts, not DE.
Agreed. Couldn't find any on youtube. If we pick him up I'll go look at preseason games on my ipad, but it's so inefficient to search for guys. I need someone to do coach-cutups for me. lol. Imagine hiring someone to do that for you just as a fan.
At least you're honest. Taylor caught my attention when I was watching Eagles games to try and check out Chase Ford and then I realized what a glut they had at DE. Initially it was just his unique frame and stance that caught my attention. He sort of grew on me as I could see that his strength, frame, 2nd and 3rd steps, all that...gave him a good ceiling and made him a threat in pass rush. Once he grows into it, he could actually be pretty good. Not like I'm saying scrap our plans to draft Bjoern Werner or Dion Jordan next year in favor of Montee Taylor...I just think as we speak right now he might be the best DE pass rusher we'd have on roster other than Cam Wake.
i have never truly understood the waiver rules. can u explain them to me? where are we on the waiver list? i pretty much know that whoever is first has there pick of available players but is there a time limit?
I honestly don;t think we have anyone we could accurately call a pass rusher outside of Wake. We have guys we are *asking* to rush the passer, but they are poor fits. Even Shelby *can* do it a bit, but is by no means 'a pass rusher'. As such, anyone whose skillset actually fits the task is step in the right direction for us. Okay... next question, who would you cut to make room for Montee?
I'm confused too, because whenever I try to read them, they seem convoluted. I get the sense the order changes too, which really helps make it easy to learn. lol.
I'm almost at the point of taking a page out of Rex Ryan's and Bill Belichick's playbook, and having some off the wall option get out there and rush the passer from end. Pats used to do it with Kyle Arrington and Rex Ryan had Joe McKnight doing it until he found Aaron Maybin on waivers. Lamar Miller, step right up here. Put your hand here. Now get up off the blocks and try and run around that guy to the quarterback.
LOL. That's just funny as hell. I nominate Michael Egnew. ****er has long *** arms and at worst could tip a lot of balls and obscure the passing lane. Besides, he is an idiot savant at entirely missing the man across from him when blocking... maybe it translates to him being unblockable??
Nah, not sure he gets off the blocks well enough. Daniel Thomas always looked a lot like Cam Wake. Maybe we should see if he pass rushes like Cam Wake, too.
Not fair IMO. He had two real good blocks back to back the other night I thought, including completely putting a guy down.
Honestly, though, if Coyle wants to start finding inventive ways to get to the passer I think Wilson and Culver are his two best options outside of front-svene guys. I agree with you, though, that you don;t have to blitz those guys from a secondary spot... just sub one of them in as a ******ed two-point stance edge rusher with three down linemen. lol. Oddie and Starks can muddy up the middle. would love to see that. Let's also remember, we haven't had Dansby available to blitz inside.
They "DO" appear to share the same barber, along with some uncanny facial expressions. The differences seem to begin at the chin, and magnify from the neck down.
