Cooley has been released, not because he couldn't produce. They cut him so he could get a starting job somewhere else. You have to bring him in. With Fasano having the drops this preseason and the TE depth being null and void....Cooley has to be an option in play right now.
Egnew hasn't earned snaps. I think Clay is someone that should be on the field with Fasano and ultimately take snaps away from Lane. Cooley becomes insurance for Fasano who hasn't gone 16 since '08, I believe. Clay, Egnew, Mastrud. None of these players can fill that role. Mastrud sn't a threat receiving, the other two are not guys you want in-line. Don't think Cooley finds a starting job. Maybe he does and he's not an option, but he would be great depth for the Dolphins IMO.
I'm a little bit interested in Chris Cooley if he's healthy enough. He might not be what he once was, but there's reason for the Redskins to get rid of him, too. He had a high cap hit and he's not as good as Fred Davis anymore. It would probably mean a loss of opportunity to Charles Clay, which I'm not sure I would love, but Cooley has familiarity with this offense, and he's a good receiver.
Cooley and Gaffney provide weapons with dependable hands (or, more dependable hands than every other TE/WR on this roster except Bess) for Tannehill. Who knows, maybe you'll get a few years out of them too, but even if its just this season or two it helps. Plus, both were cut not for reasons like why TO was cut. Patriots have the top 3 catchers in the division (Gronk, Welker, Hernandez) and possibly all top 20 in the NFL, plus an elite QB, they didn't need Gaffney. Cooley similar situation, since the Redskins already have a #1 TE, they didn't want to pay over 3 million for Cooley this season.
I think there's an issue with having Cooley replace Mastrud. Chris Cooley can't block worth a ****, and we've already got Charles Clay(who can only block worth a **** in the backfield), and Michael Egnew(Who can't really block worth a **** under any circumstances). If Anthony Fasano goes down, you're basically up ****'s creek in situations. Quality blocking tight ends I think are a pretty nice thing to have in zone blocking schemes, too.
Per Armando's Twitter, Schefter mentioned the Fins, Raiders and Jets as possible landing spots for Cooley.
Just checked with the Head of Physical Therapy for the redskins, who is an old classmate of mine, "cooley, finally healthy", "awesome teammate, hope he hooks on somewhere"
Seems more complicated than that. Shanahan wouldn't say if he did or didn't, but Cooley apparently said “Today, for the time being, will be my last day as a Redskin” too. Could mean that he did ask for his release he's alluding to retiring as a Redskin, but it seems pretty reasonable he got cut for his high cap hit.
If he makes the 53 Yeatman is a newly converted tackle from a tight end spot. Given his size and height he could still be used on short yardage and goal line situations. He has to make the squad first. I for one would like to see him make it.
Cooley is healthy this year. He got cut because Fred Davis is a better TE then him and Logan Paulsen is a better blocker then him and he makes more then both of them. Cooley can still play.
I'd personally be pretty pleased with this scenario. I'm of the opinion that if he works out, you use him for more than just short yardage/goal line. If you can make him into the next Brandon Manumaleuna while having a legitimate developmental/back-up offensive linemen, that's awesome.
I like Streeter's potential, but Ireland had like a billion shots at the guy and didn't pull the trigger.
since you all sleeping right now, i thought i sneak in and give this thread a bump...hope ireland is on fire the next few days
I'm pretty envious of the Raiders WR corp. Heyward-Bay, Moore, Ford, Criner, and Streater. Anyways some Wideouts that could be a casualty around the league. Jerricho Cotchery Devin Aromashodu Greg Salas Chris Owusu Ben Obomanu Deon Butler Slim pickings are going to be out there. Hopefully we get James Jones.
Ah, there's nothing quite like a well-thought-out, expertly crafted and genuinely insightful post with a certain artistic verve to start my day. Bravo I say, bravo!
The Giants cut DE Matt Broha who had 3.5 sacks in preseason play, was a udfa. No idea if any good, but the Giants want him on the practice squad and we could really use another pass rusher.
If you're going to come off as some angry cro-magnon man and call people idiots could you at least spell it correctly?
Yeah I think a good rule of thumb is to take a look at cut: pass rushers from the Giants, WRs from Green Bay, Secondary from Baltimore and LB from Pitt.
I'd take Gaffney if healthy. He can run routes very well and catches passes. Gurley is worth a shot. Barden, IMO, no. Jarius Wynn I don't mind. Brody Eldridge is a pure blocker and decent at best at it IMO. Danario Alexander has a lot of talent, but man he can't stay healthy. They ran into a very good issue where Ojomo has stepped up and perhaps made Adrian Tracy expendable, who I wouldn't mind seeing. Ojomo was impressive at the U too, but had issues like a broken jaw that made him lose 20 pounds and then the whole Shapiro thing.
