Karlos Dansby, Reggie Bush talk Vontae Davis trade

I think Philbin would be more open to trading him at that point and communicate it to Ireland.

What do you think the consequences would be? (this is usually a snarky question on here but I actually am curious what you think)

That's where I think the leaders have to (eventually) be on-board with the head coach's philosophy to avoid "union" type leadership, where it's players (union members) unified "against" coaches (management), versus a scenario in which coaches and players are unified with each other, and the leaders among the players carry the coach's message to their teammates.

If you add them with the conversation with Philbin it could lead one to believe he is doing what he is told.

We should ask ourselves, what would John Wooden have done?

That's true, I should have said implied.

I'm sure if a reasonable offer comes across for any player it gets discussed. I'm fairly certain they decided Marshall + 2nd rd pick is worth more to the team than VD. I think they made that decision based on his sub par play. That is not being tyrannical or even close. But it does mean they weren't actively shopping him.

I don't think Philbin is going to view Dansby's quote in this regard as problematic. In fact I think he may even view it as progress.

Good point. But I think the players already hate Ireland. Ireland is kinda like the abusive father that the kids hate. Philbin is the mother they hope will protect them from the drunken deadbeat dad. When momma Philbin doesn't stand up to wife beating dad, the players feel betrayed.

I'm being a little satirical here, but I do think if the players are angry at Philbin it's this type of trust issue.

Like I said, I don't think this leadership council exists yet DJ. When we're down to 53, the issue will be revisited.

But Philbin did say he'd meet with them after Carolina abput the road trip.. So they actively plan meetings.

You are making the assumption that Vontae was traded because of his problems.

It appears Vontae was traded because Indy approached us with a solid offer. There's a difference there.

The person whose opinion matters in this case is Philbin. I suspect we'll find out soon enough.

That is a last ditch effort to keep him on the field. Isn't that just amazing how far they will go to keep him playing. Bad thing is I bet it's not over he will mess everything up yet.

Dansby hasn't done enough to warrant being cut, and teams aren't going to trade for that contract. I don't see enough talent at that position, so having him demoted isn't feasible. If there were consequences, I would guess it would be a benching for a series or something along those lines.

And I don't think this is a case of Philbin communicating his desires of trading players away. He made Vontae the 3rd CB, he expressed his feelings on Vontae to Ireland, but I don't think he said he wanted him traded. Ireland got a call about a player that he knows was the 3rd best CB on the team and he acted accordingly.

I feel like much of it stems back to organization-locker room communications and relationship.

What makes me sad is, if Philbin worked with a GM who had a great human touch with players, this isn't an issue.

If Ireland hired a HC who had a great human touch with players, this isn't an issue.

But pair them together and I think there is a gap in how well they sell their vision and actions to team as a whole, and how well they connect with players.

And it doesn't matter to me if there wasn't some official date or not, the motive of the meeting was to rectify exactly what just happened with Vontae..if Philbin wanted Vontae off his team, he should of called an unofficial meeting with the leaders to honor what he said was going to happen..

I think you're right but hope we're both wrong. Seems like rape is imminent for this team with a rookie QB and a roster full of holes at crucial positions. I'm trying really hard to be optimistic but I just have a hard time imaging this team winning many games.

Then again, I thought this way about the 2008 squad. But that was before Chad Pennington fell into their laps. Just seems like another 2007 **** storm is brewing.

man did i mention this is the worst ever i feel about this team to go in a season, even when we were 1-15 i had hope before the season started and was optimistic, but this year.....nope, the only thing i want is that tannehill is getting out of this healthy, body and brain wise

I have to say, Ireland will have to be Tyrion Lannister x10 to survive into next season.

This team is not set to perform well.

Guys, New England has been acting like that for years. Everybody sings the same tune. They released Lawyer Milloy because of contract negotiations 5 days before the first game in 2003. They were hammered by Buffalo on the first game. I think it was 31-0. Nobody in NE locker room said a peep, if I recall. There were discussions that Bellichick had lost the locker room. They went out and won the SB.

Being 'media robots' is standard in NE. I don't recall it being different in Pittsburgh, SF or other leading organizations.

This has nothing to do with any of those years. The team is going to suck at this rate. If anything 2008 would be a better comparison. That said the team needs two things to happen to have a chance in games:

Jonathan Martin must improve his play drastically
Hartline must return to give the WRs some semblance of passable play

I have to think that the players who want professionally-acting players around them will be on board with this approach. The elite players and leaders in the league, such as Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, are that way and demand that from the players around them.

If I'm that kind of player myself, I'm glad Philbin and company are ridding the roster of the folks who can't seem to live up to that.

If I'm not that kind of player myself, I have to be doing some serious self-examination at this point, which is a good thing for the team IMO.

This is why, when they traded Marshall, I said they should trade everyone. Dansby, Bush, Long - everyone. You re-build in a half-*** manner such as this, and this is what happens.

I think it's another approach that can work in the NFL.

The key is to have player leaders who believe in the coach's approach and carry that forth to their teammates. That can happen regardless of the coach's approach, whether it be Philbin's, which is one based on professionalism, or some other one.

They're certainly throwing caution to the wind. They're starting a rookie QB. They ditched Brandon Marshall. They ditched Kendall Langford. They ditched Yeremiah Bell. They didn't really sign anyone of note in free agency. The banner draft acquisition was a QB, see the part about starting a rookie QB. Now they ditch Vontae Davis.

At what point do we decide that the veterans might have a point when they look at all this "team building" and see it as more "team unbulding"? The coaches are asking those veterans to swallow a LOT based on totally unearned faith.

It's not like the majority of these veterans are at major problem spots. A RB and a versatile LB that really isn't that great at anything^

You can afford to give that up. What are they trying to hold onto? When the team sucks no one is going to be convinced with hey we have Karlos Dansby it's ok.

What is half-*** about this they drafted a 1st round QB, trying Vet WR, didn't work gone, getting great return potential on a player not giving full potential, showing the rookies what is rewarded and whats not. I see a good future possible here.

I see a regime showing they aren't going to settle for half-***.
