Interesting debate topic, let's just say the Yankees put a claim in for Josh Beckett, the Sox would be dumb not to just give him away for nothing even if its to the Yankees right?
This crap isn't going to end just because the Pats are back. There's going to be another offseason like last year. These players won't be able to escape again. Plus you have the added will Bobby stay or go etc. The media is going to have another field day.
he would pull an Ichiro and be lights out for the rest of the year....and probably win us another WS...... AmIRight?
I know I am saying as far as actual play on the field goes....because again watching them go through the motions must be frustrating to those who root for them....
Oh I don't think there's anyway Cashman would claim either due to the price tag, I was thinking of this more from the Red Sox side. I think if Beckett got claimed by anyone the Sox would let him go for free. As far as Gonzalez, I could see a team like the Dodgers putting in a claim for Gonzalez but I couldn't see the Sox letting him go for nothing even with his big contract. Probably. I don't think Beckett is done by any means, I just think it's time he leaves Boston and has a fresh start. I wouldn't be shocked at all if he moved to the NL and pulled a Burnett. He'd be a great NL pitch at this stage in his career.
The Red Sox have placed Adrian Gonzalez on trade waivers, a source tells Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com (via Twitter).
Every player is put on waivers. You don't/didn't miss anything until once a player is dealt. It's just a whole lot of noise until then.
I don't get Gonzo though....why would they even consider trading him? Some chatter about Lackey for Wells straight up in the off-season....u hearing anything Fink?
The reasons why the Sox would consider trading Gonzalez is most likely due to the size of his contract (if the team thinks he's worth the money still) or if they can get a package back for him that would make the club better. Or it's possible Gonzalez is a problem in the clubhouse and they simply want to get rid of him etc. I saw that report an Angel beat writer floated, personally if the money/years were a wash I'd rather have Lackey. I think Wells is cooked as an everyday player and I really believe Lackey was hurt both years with the Sox and assuming the TJ surgery was a success there's no reason for me to think Lackey can't be a solid #4 starter. I think Lackey will be the more valuble player moving forward. Plus IF Lackey bounces back he would be easier to trade than Wells would be. Plus where is Wells going to play with the Red Sox? You have Crawford and Ellsbury locked at LF and CF and they will probably either resign Ross or give the keys to Kalish. Wells would be nothing more than a 4th OFer.
Not enough to justify him as a full time DH. He hasn't been good in 2 or 3 years now. He was always a bit overrated in my opinion.
The Red Sox pitching is pitiful. The Angels will be going home early this year for the same reason. This has been like 97' Red Sox bad, I hurts to remember this. '
But this was all Bob Mclure's fault, now that the Sox got rid of him the pitching will be good again, right? Last night was the perfect example of the 2012 Red Sox. Good to see Aceves turn back into a pumpkin and Valentine leaving him in for a 2nd inning after it was clear he had nothing in the 1st.
Ok NOW is the time we can start talking about Adrian Gonzalez being put on waivers since he was claimed by the Dodgers. So either the Red Sox can pull Gonzalez back, make a trade with the Dodgers or simply let the Dodgers have Gonzalez and his contract for nothing. Gonzalez is owed 127 million for the next 6 years I believe so this is actually a somewhat tough choice. The payroll flexiblity would be huge but trying to replace him is a tougher challenge, especially with no internal candidates available. Should be an interesting 48 hours, but I'm guessing the Sox pull Gonzalez back and then try to explore trades in the offseason. It's clear the Dodgers want him badly though. By the way for fantasy purposes a Dodger line up with Gonzalez, Hanley, Kemp, Victorino and Ethier would be pretty sweet to see.
Sure thing? Gonzalez has been a pretty big disappointment in terms of his power numbers since he's been with the Sox. And was only ok the 2nd half of last season and the 1st half of this season. I wouldn't call him a sure thing by any means. That's not to say I don't think Gonzalez can be the same player he was with the Padres but right now we haven't seen that player in Boston yet outside of first 3 months in 2011. I don't think the Sox move him right now but I wouldn't be surprised if they entertain offers in the offseason.
add this to discussion too: Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com reports that the Dodgers have been awarded a waiver claim on Josh Beckett. Surprising news. Can you say package deal??
@SBerthiaumeESPN: ESPNBoston's @GordonEdes reports: #RedSox & #Dodgers working on deal that would send AGon, Crawford, Beckett and Punto to LA.
Gonzalez has six years remaining on his mega contract that pays him $127 million over that time, plus what he's owed for the rest of this season. He has a limited no-trade clause, but reportedly the Dodgers aren't one of the teams he can block. Meanwhile, Beckett would need to approve any deal with the Dodgers -- even a straight waiver claim -- because he has 5-10 right, five years with the same team and 10 years overall of service. Still, Beckett doesn't seem to be enjoying himself in Boston and who has ever said no to playing in Los Angeles? The Red Sox owe Beckett $15.75 over each of the next two seasons and he'd still get that and what's owed of his $15.75 million salary for this season, so there's little reason for him not to accept it. CBSSports.com Insider Jon Heyman confirms the report from Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com that the Red Sox and Dodgers are talking about not only sending those two players to Los Angeles, but also Carl Crawford (who is owed $102.5 million over the next five years) and Nick Punto (who will make $1.5 million next year) to Los Angeles -- if you're the Red Sox, you don't ask for ketchup and mustard on your Dodger dog, you say yes. For the record, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times tweets the Dodgers have talked about sending the team's top two prospects, right-handers Zach Lee and Allen Webster, along with right-handed reliever Rubby De La Rosa and outfielder Jerry Sands to Boston. Heyman notes any deal would include Boston sending cash to L.A. and having to take free-agent-to-be James Loney for the rest of the season.
If he pulls a Carlos Lee....you all should tar and feather him like the good 'ol revolution days of yore.
I can't upload the photo through my phone for some reason but Adrian Gonzalez's photo is being taken down and he's scratched out of the lineup,
You have 2 bad contracts, one of which is terrible, one real good player but in a long expensive contract, and a nobody...... I am not sure the Sox can expect much back....I say Either and a few prospects....
Edes keeps harping on Gonzalez, Beckett, Crawford and Punto to LA. I seriously don't know to be thrilled or sad right now.
