Or like Sparano with his memorizing snap counts. I just really hope Philbin GETS THROUGH to these men, ya know? Mike McCarthy had more fire than Philbin. Now the roles are reversed where the HC is passive and the OC is fired-up. I did like his quote where he said, " I can give you the hard speech where I say, WE CAN CUT YOUR ***" but..................why didn't you coach?
Because they know that, and it's on them to accept the responsibility and accountability of being professionals. This isn't a guy leading a high school football team here. These are adult men who get paid millions. They shouldn't need to be reminded of their accountability. What "gets through" to these men will be the leaders among them IMO, their fellow players. It's up to Philbin IMO to create an environment in which that leadership can develop and flourish, to the point where it creates a winning team culture.
You're absolutely right Shouright. Love your posts edit: although, it would be nice for the players to rally around their coach. they did it for sparano
Picking wrappers off the field does have a lot to do with coaching these men, so to speak, b/c it fits in with Philbin's make up. It's difficult to have a successful organization if it's not an organized organization, and Philbin seems so detail oriented that this belief extends to the minutest of details, like picking up wrappers. In his mind there likely aren't different degrees of being organized, that you're either organized or you're not, so in that regard a wrapper on the field represents disorganization. Besides, it's an NFL practice field, not high school, and should be treated as such, which means respecting it and taking pride that you're even playing on it. Ditto for the dirty locker room. There are thousands of football fans who would lick that floor clean to be in their shoes with an opportunity to play for Miami. Players will begin noticing that Philbin has the humility to pick trash off the field, and some will likely gain a respect for him b/c of it. It's symbolic in nature as well b/c his actions are essentially conveying that players need to be more responsible for their own actions.
You might wanna embed that in SPOLIER tags, or just ask people to PM you for it. Sometimes it gets dicey posting links to that stuff out on the open forum and I'd hate for the mods to throw you in solitary LOVE that you're helping us find a way to watch it though!@ MUCH appreciated, For real.
While Ireland, the only holdover from Parcells-Sparano... seemed to sneer at the whole thing. Hopefully Joe can team him some things, the whippersnapper.
I seem to recall him being out there with like 2 minutes left in the half. I'd guess he played more snaps than any of our other DBs in that game.
lol. Your post wasn't up at the time I was writing mine so it looks like I just copied much of what you said. grrrrr.
You know when HK starts and they show all the shots of the scenery in and around Miami, South Beach, etc, I cannot imagine a more desirable place to live for a pro athlete.
It wasn't a close enough shot to be able to tell for sure, but according to some, not me, he seemed to sneer at the suggestion of a meeting between a council of players and he and Philbin.
Oh, gotchya. I'd have to watch it again. However, I could understand a GM in that situation having a look about him that's saying, "I hope this isn't some type of insubordination attempt b/c that's where it seems this might be headed." But at least he didn't say anything and let his HC handle it like he appropriately should, and in the end it worked out.
seemed to be an *** when Bush suggested a meeting with vet players. hated his body language and expression. I'd have wanted to say, "What's *your* problem?"
I'm probably more of an enigma b/c I'd consider myself as a combination of the two, which contradicts itself, I know. I think I'm more of a Hank Moody though, minus the smoking, fame, and dirty Porche. I take it you're more of a Gunner Jensen from the Expendables? I win at life if I just made you google something!
Man, if I was on that team... and messed up on a play, rather than getting yelled at by the head coach, i'd be dropping wrappers all over the place. Get called into Philbin's office for a "sitdown"... eff that... I know what's coming... I'm rolling in a couple of trash cans ahead of time and dumping the stuff all over the office to keep him busy. "did you have something on your mind coach?"
my guess: he is a complex man and he is not utilizing just one approach: in some way he is a "father figure", protective, not harsh in the way he confronts the players, going busting balls §(but in a funny way: the nazi police LOL) for lace shoes and towels or wearing rings and so on (just a little joke with the player)....so, someone could say he treats these guys liike babies but in other moments he just treat them like adults, like when he said "I could give you the tough guy speech, but"... he is saying them they are pro and it is pointless remembering them that their job (just like his) is on the line...
Well, part of being an effective "father" is empathizing and understanding while also setting limits and teaching and enforcing responsibility and accountability. He's doing both. Saban did the latter without the former, and Cameron did the former without the latter. Sparano did both but suffered in the intelligence department IMO.
