this is going to drive me insane that I can't think of the movie that he was in. I think he played a cop in the movie I'm thinking... and I thought it starred Sandra Bullock. but no...
Who determines the depth charts for each position? Is it the coach assigned to those positions say O'Keefe with recievers, or is at the top with Philbin? Or combination?
The other question is who decides who gets playing time during the game? Jim Turner was able to decide how long Jerry played, but it seemed like Dan Campbell the week before was going to lobby for Les Brown to get in.
Maybe when we saw Turner in the boardroom talking about how he was gonna ride Jerry that was part of him lobbying for more time?
Philbin gets final call but he'll go a lot by what his position coaches recommend. Sherm did say when it comes to WRs though that ST coach Darren Rizzi's recommendations would be given a lot of credence.
I figured it out!! I know you guys are excited about this as I am, right?... he was in Battlefield LA, Dark Knight... Dan Campbell... separated at birth with... Aaron Eckhart... unfortunately there are no current pics of Dan Campbell to compare him to... so you have to go back and watch Hard Knocks.
I was listening to Anthony Fasano on with Big Dog this morning and he said something interesting. He was talking about Joe Philbin's being detail oriented "as you saw last night" (referring to the shoelaces stuff, trash, etc). He said that people in the locker room are starting to respect him, that it takes time and doesn't always come but he senses it's starting to happen. Here's the uninteresting part of that statement: him saying the locker room respects him. Here's the interesting part of that statement: the timing. The timing of it is interesting. Philbin just had that pow wow with Reggie Bush, Karlos Dansby and Jake Long. I think that really made a difference.
Yeah the beard pic is from Erin Brockovich.... and the only reason I saw that movie was to see if Julia Roberts would be shown naked... honest...
Is it ironic that Eckhart also starred as a football coach, an offensive coordinator in Oliver Stone's Any Given Sunday? Now here we are talking of his physical resemblance to one of our coaches.
I honestly could never understand what all the fuss was about her looks. The last time I saw a mouth like hers it had a hook in it. Looking objectively, JMO here, her brother Eric would qualify as a handsome man far ahead of Julia qualifying as a beautiful woman.
Something else I noticed happening again in this episode...after that R Mathews TD the coaches again can be heard saying "Get that ball" ...small thing, but a cool thing to note.
pretty spot on break down of the episode. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap10...rd-knocks-rolls-on?module=HP11_content_stream "pasty white thighs Devlin"
Again, I think it was Philbin's reacting to the Dansby/Sid Rosenberg issue by inviting the players to talk to him about team issues personally, and then honoring that invitation when he was approached by Bush and company, including Dansby, whom he could've treated much differently and punitively because of the Rosenberg interview. It may sound corny, but essentially he acted like an understanding father to his players. He could've been very punitive and shut down their voices on the heels of the Dansby interview, but instead he channeled that same player energy and need for self-expression into the formation of leadership among them, which is so important IMO. Of course Bush, Dansby, and Long initiated the meeting, but it was Philbin who invited it, agreed to it, honored it, gave it his time, and helped it end in the formation of real player leadership. Those kinds of actions generate respect.
I hope your right Doc... Wish I was as confident. Dansby seems like the kind of guy that wants to be looked in the eye, and remembers stuff like that..coach didn't do that to him after their meeting..no conclusions just sayin.
This is who Dan Campbell reminds me of http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1041597/ morgan spurlock of super size me
I totally agree with the fatherly comment. I get the same vibe. I really liked his reaction to Vontae's personal foul. You could tell Vontae was ready to defend himself and was really heated at the moment, but Philbin just asked him very calmly what happened--he was clearly ready to listen, not just upset like a lot of coaches would be.
That was interesting to me too. I wanted to know how Vonate got benched. From the looks of things Philibin just wanted to know what happened and got Vontae's side of the story. Philibin comes across as pragmatic and it sounded like he understood where Vontae was coming from. From then on I think Vontae sat out the game to cool off. I'm guessing at a regular season game he Vontae would be back in at a later stage.
Ireland quickly surmised where their intentions were headed, and wanted no part of making any "check with us first" concessions, when the three concerned veterans requested a meeting. His absense at the summit, avoided any "on the HK record" agreements, obligating him to initiate any proposed knee jerk roster cuts he could have on a whim, through any player governed, cannings by committee.
Well I think Dansby has something to prove here, in that he gave the interview with Rosenberg and took things external like he shouldn't have. Philbin is giving him a shot to lead the team in the appropriate way, and the lack of eye contact there is similar to what he gave Chad Johnson after the "F-bomb" press conference incident, where he took him aside, gave him some instruction, but I think sent a "message" by not making it real intimate eye contact-wise. Same thing with Dansby here. Dansby may want eye contact, but right now Dansby is the one on notice, not Philbin. Philbin's giving him a shot to be a good leader here, but it's on Dansby to follow through with that.
That was another respect-generating move in the eyes of the players, I'm sure, as was his treatment of Eric Steinbach, where he was reluctant to put Steinbach on fim playing poorly for the rest of the league to see. Watching out for players in those ways is what these guys respond to IMO. That's how you get these guys to run through walls for you. And I think for Philbin it comes very naturally. He's not over the top with it like Cam Cameron, in that he still sends a message of accountability and doesn't get too "soft," but he's very player-centered.
Good question. Cleaning wrappers off the practice field? Isn't there a water boy that can do that? Let's just hope he can coach these men into better football players. Not really sure how wrappers on a practice field affect that.
I think CK hit it right on the head. Dansby is has good intentions but doesn't know how to be a leader yet. He should learn quick and start making more game-chaning plays.
You're right -- it doesn't. It's entirely possible that he can clean wrappers off a practice field and coach his players into better football players at the same time. I think it's far more probable that the trait responsible for Joe Philbin's picking up of wrappers off of his practice field is also one associated with running a good football operation than it is that the trait is somehow a bad one in terms of his job. The trait is conscientiousness if not perfectionism. As long as he's not engaging in compulsive rituals that interfere with his job, I'd say conscientiousness and/or perfectionism are what you'd want in the head coach of the football team you're rooting for. I suspect Bill Belichick has the same trait, for example.
Right, but that's the benefit of a "council" -- there will be a shared leadership body here. Dansby may very well learn how to lead from Bush and Long, and Bush and Long may be the ones keeping him in line.
