Miami was 15th in Defensive Passer Rating last year.

Over the last 8 games, they were really good. I'm not sure about their rankings, but I would guess top 5-10 in pass defense.

Whatever issues they had defensively last season weren't necessarily personnel-related either, IMO. It was pretty clear that they botched the lockout pretty badly. Once they got everyone into shape, they played pretty damn well.

ETA: there was a pretty decent article that broke down last year's team. Pass defense was 30th over first 9 weeks, 3rd from weeks 10-17:

I don't see how Vontae has necessarily regressed. These issues he's having aren't anything new. At worst, its "same old Vontae", at best its "finally gets it".

There are question marks with the defense. New coordinator and the departure of Bell. But those could just as likely be positives as they are negatives. Certainly there is a lot to be determined about this defense, but I don't see it as a unit that is more likely to fail than succeed.

After last season did you think he would be demoted during camp this year?

To the original question, tonight will go a long way toward telling me whether Ryan Tannehill should start right away or not. I haven't made up my mind yet.

Once he starts, you can't put the genie back in the bottle. He's the starter until he's a bust or until he's retired.

I thought it would have been prudent to try and avoid him playing as poorly as he did to start last year. Now I didn't think that would manifest itself through a demotion in camp. But at the same time, I didn't think we would go out and sign Richard Marshall. I think signing Marshall gave the coaches the luxury of being able to demote Vontae without losing much.

It seems you're implying his play last year was good enough to not be expected to be benched this year. Doesn't that come across as contradictory of your point to you?

What, if anything, would you most expect Ryan to find challenging as a starter this season? Would you like to see him proving anything in particular? With Henne, I wanted to see him diagnose, dissect and have the touch to throw against zone coverage. What would Tannehill's best litmus test be?

He's a rookie. He needs to prove everything. There's nothing in particular. Everything could go wrong for a rookie QB.

I thought Vontae Davis last year was rounding into becoming one of the top CBs in the league. I think his demotion represents a clear regression from that, and I think his replacement is not as good a player as I was expecting Vontae Davis to be this year.

My point is that the personnel in the defensive backfield isn't very good, and Davis's demotion and replacement by a lesser player than what Davis IMO projected to be is consistent with that.

StringerBell, if my numbers are right, here are our pass defense stats from week 9 on and how they rank if averaged out to 16 games.
The numbers might shock some people.

    68.0 QBR (#1)
    57.5% completion (#8)
    6.1 avg per attempt (#2)
    10.4 yards per completion (#3)
    10 TDs (#6)
    14 INTs (#2)

I don't see why we couldn't come close to duplicating this considering the schedule we play as well as the addition of Marshall and hopeful maturation of SS24 & RJ.

What would be the reason to start Matt Moore?
Let's start the Tannehill era sooner rather than later.
Grooming a QB from the bench is a lost art.

End of the first quarter and I think we're seeing the problem I alluded to here in the original post. No defense, no receivers, Ryan Tannehill having to bring the team back from a large deficit.

Not a good way for a rookie QB to have to start his career IMO.

Don't start him until we get a competent O-Line. I don't want him to die out there.

I think the shaky supporting cast is really the main reason not to start him, unless he bombs in the last few games and makes a non-starting call easy.

At this point, I think it might be best to target a mid season date for him to come in, excepting Moore really taking over and making a real playoff run. Sometime between games 5-8 maybe.

Not to mention, we face some tough matchups early - may be better to let a rook watch those and acclimate to watching the speed, diagnosing from the side for a bit before coming in vs. some of the more mid ranking teams. Week 6 vs. St Louis, followed by a bye to prep for the Jets seems like a good point. This will let us see how our OL and WRs are gelling as well.

While I d believe in throwing in young QB to take some lumps, having a deficient offense can hinder - look at the type of season Gabbert put together last year. Or the ultimate example, David Carr.

Yes I think Tannehill should start. He is the best (healthy) QB we have, and should only get better. He could certainly use the experience.

We got a TD with Ryan on the field. I expected more from Moore going against backups.

yeah Moore had a real bad night... not as bad as Martin though. Thought Devlin looked good as the 3rd quarterback, save for the last play.

Tannehill was marginally better than Moore tonight. Tannehill should be starting against Atlanta next week. I'm thinking if Garrad is healthy enough to play the season opener he will. My guess is they will ship Moore off. Minnesota could use a back up because Joe Webb is not a QB.

Martin got absolutely abused. I saw him look pretty stiff. He got beaten with an array of moves, too, which is concerning. He took a bullrush that pancaked him. He got beaten to the edge twice (and he got really high and showed a terrible shuffle on those). He also had an 'ole. Hopefully it's just growing pains.

, but Charles Johnson is no slouch. He doesn't get much attention in the small-market Carolina, but he's quietly logged 20+ sacks in 2 years. He was a force tonight.

What surprises me is he actually looked worse this week. I thought he'd improve his mistakes and technique and get beat a bit less... or at least the same amount but nope... worse.

Charles Johnson is a load of a DE to handle for a seasoned vet, let alone a rookie. The only way Martin isn't getting abused by Johnson at this point is if he's Jake Long IMO.

problem is Frank Alexander got off on Martin too. Martin is not ready to start at RT...we're debating the wrong thing with Tannehill... it should be Martin that is the topic to debate... and it's not even arguable at this point.

I wouldn't start Tannehill in this mess.

I tuned in tonight to see if Tannehill's ability against a first team would be as good as it was last week against Tampa Bay's second team, and I spent more time realizing that his own team around him was even worse than I'd thought.
