Just noticed the online pre-season package lets you watch last years pre-season games too. Ladt year we also played the Panthers in week two of the pre-season. I thought I'd watch to see potential similarities, differences, etc.

I'll post my thoughts in here as I watch it.

    So far:

    - This is our first chance to see how Philbins team matches up against the same opponent as Sparano's team. It was 20-10 last year. (I know, I know... it's meaningless and it's preseason)

    - Last year they were without Beason for the game against us

    - Watching them kick to Livas... makes me realize Padre has adopted Thigpen as this year's Livas. Every year Pads has his pet player. I'm still waiting for that greek lineman to make a probowl.. Stoumpaloumpas or whatever? (just teasing pads... you liked Wake early so that gives you credibility for about ten more 'misses')

    - Dansby can't cover Olsen. Wonder if we'll see that again.

    - This was Cam Newton's rookie year... this time around it's Tannehill's rookie year. Let's hope for a great showing by our rookie. (How's the Panthers D this year... SICK< your imput would be great in this thread. Scouting Report?)

Barry, you have too much free time, go buy a PS3 and Madden 13 in a few weeks. :tongue2:

Just kidding bud, and we won last year's preseason game against them.

I think we forget how good Hartline can be, since we aren;t seeing him play right now.

Just watched him get wide open deep for what should have been a 40 yard TD. Henne overthrew him.

The announcers mentioned hartline scoring a 40 yard TD in the prior pre-season game. He CAN get deep and beat deep coverage with some regularity. The fact that he doesn't 'scare' anyone probably helps him in that regard. He is underestimated and the next thing you know, he has out-techniqued you and is running free deep.

At the time, I had not watched as much CFL as I do now, Tsoumpas did not make it to TC that yr.

Thigpen I have seen, the other guy who blossomed in the CFL believe it or not, is Chris Williams, the cat who looked great in preseason 09 but had a ball plunk off of his facemask and was did not make the team.

Well... Daniel Thomas sucked at goalline last year, let's hope we have a different answer this year. Didn't look like it in pre-season game one.

Last year, DT got stoned a few times at the goal line so they took him out and let Hilliard go in.

I fear our team, being even LESS power-oriented than last year's, may do better getting into the red zone from the 15 yard line than from inside the 5.

It would maker a big difference having Tannehill in on Goal line with his mobility and size... Bootleg baby.

Phil Livas actually looked good last preseason. Still kind of a curious decision by the coaches to let him go. He's with the Ravens this preseason I believe.

Did anyone else notice that Daniel Thomas got like 2 carries in the Buccaneers game?

I mean, he did well with them...gained -2 yards...but still...

Some great blocking up front last year vs the Panthers... even WITH Columbo in there, because Long, Incog and Pouncey dominated.

Seems like our best run gaps are Off-Tackle Left between Fasano and Jake Long, HB dive/iso/(inside zone now) between Pounce and Incognito... or far outside right... like WAY outside... which can slightly negate the Columbo-Martin Effect. (God I hope I never use that phrase again)

It wasn't a popular pick overall, and when you had Henne and Moore as your QBs and you trade up for a running back when Mallet is sitting there you're really going to put that guy on the spot. It's on DT to prove everyone wrong, and he's not doing it yet.

Panthers defense is their biggest question mark. Beason missed last week with a hamstring injury. He missed all of last year with a torn achilles. Thomas Davis is "healthy" but he hasnt played an entire season since the Jimmy Carter regime. Their new rookie linebacker Luke Keuchley is a STUD.....S - T - U - D....they love him up here. Their defensive line is terrible except for Charles Johnson, greg hardy is "eh"....and their D-backs are pretty bad. Godfrey is ok, Gamble is old, and Captain Munnerlyn is "eh"

They have a lot of depth at DB's they are wanting to see more of (young guys) so it'll be fun to watch the backups.

Of course offensivley they have cam, denangelo/jstew, smitty, olsen, lafell, and watch out for tutu trying to lock down the #3 battling with louis murphy.

And what is Mallet proving? That he would've been our savior? Far from it, against scrubs too. Mallet reduces your argument's effectiveness. Just say we moved up to get back into the 2nd round for this guy and I will agree he is under performing. But, so is the O-Line in the running game as well.

Clyde Gates just never seemed on the same page with Henne... in fact, has he ever seemed on the same page as anyone??

But him being on the field pulled the safety deep so Bess could catch a nice 20 yard crossing pattern.

Following play, henne drastically overthrows a wide open Gates.

Man, if Gates and Tannehill developed chemistry... it would be explosive.

Let's be thankful for Fasano. he has looked great this year. Catching well. Blocking well. There's a question mark we DON'T have... because LAST year I'm watching him drop balls.

    Thanks, Sick!

Translation - This is a good defense to start the rookie against. Less pass rush from the Dline. better chance we get the run going a bit.

Our defense is gonna be challenged. I like it. They should be further ahead than they are.

Pretty much, except Gamble isn't too bad in my opinion. Louis Murphy had a few good plays last game if I remember right, and Joe Adams runs around like a chicken with its head cut off on returns, hopefully our coverage team doesn't help him make the highlights.

The sarcasm about the -2 yards was a joke. But I'm serious about the only two carries thing. I know they started focusing on passing it more but even so, Reggie Bush and Lamar Miller had more carries and Steve Slaton had just as many.

They need to get Daniel Thomas more carries against Carolina if they want to find out whether he's really improved or not, no?

As a low 2nd round pick, Mallett wouldn't need to be a savior. Just a guy that keeps training on and eventually becomes a good quarterback, which are expensive assets in today's NFL.

Chad Henne was never on the same page with anyone that was running deep. Rarely on the same chapter.

I know you know Thigpen , but for those who don't , don't sleep on him. If he is healthy and he gets enough touches I expect him to flash. Guy makes plays and is very dangerous . He also is a football player that specializes in returns as opposed to a speedy guy being placed into that situation.

If he doesn't jump off the screen and goes unnoticed in this game, it's just too late, imo to do enough in the last two weeks to make the roster.

THIS is the game fringe guys HAVE to show well in.

By the fourth game, major shifts in the depth chart aren't happening. Just minor ones.

Kidding aside, he needs time with the 1st unit because he's slated thus far to be with the 1st unit in certain situations, rotating with Reggie Bush. Every snap he gets during the regular season while we discover he can't hack it is a wasted snap, so let's get some of those out of the way now.

They need to decide on DT or Slaton very soon so I'd agree. Give DT a heavy load this game with 1st team. I don't know how many carries each back usually gets, but I'd love to see him get 10 carries or so, in midfield AND ESPECIALLY in goal line situations. If he has shown zero improvement in his body use at the goal line, I don't know man.... because he's not home-run guy I want in there at mid-field, so wtf do we want him for?

That is the thing. Give Bush a few carries for the principle, but then let DT earn his spot. No need to put Reggie in there and risk him getting injured. We know what he can do. Lets evaluate DT, Miller, Messam, and the bunch by spreading a healthy amount of snaps to those guys.

I thought I read on twitter recently where Daniel Thomas talked about how last year he didn't eat right or have the right work ethic, and it really hindered him.

If that's the case and he's starting to look back on that as the reason for his under performance, then I think he's maturing. A while ago all he could talk about was how unhealthy he was and how he's finally healthy, etc. They didn't even ask him anything about health and he was like "I'm healthy this year, last year I had injuries, did I mention I had injuries? I was injured". I think this is a better attitude, looking to what he didn't do that he could have to be a better player.

He is really explosive, he sometimes makes poor decisions with the ball but he literally can score from anywhere on the field.

Suspect Messam is in roster trouble, just one of those deals where he was injured at the wrong time and it hampered him.

Argos could use a NI Rb..just sayin'..

Yep, it would help him a lot if he could show well as a blocker in the backfield etc

I'm hoping he is like Clifton Smith when he was with the Bucs, but you are right, guys have to be feeling the pressure now, esp with knowing Philbin just cut Johnson without so much as a shrug.
