I thought the same thing. But, today is his first day in pads. Maybe, that was the reason. ...and this from Omar:
Weird from the tweets I was reading midway through practice, it sounded like all the QB's were having a good day.
Is it me or is Matt Moore pretty much averaging two picks and a fumble in every practice? He was asked how he thinks he's doing in the competition, and even he had to admit that he's "somewhere in the middle" of the pack (of four). It sounds like Tannehill started off OK but then had a bad stretch. Pro Football Focus' Neil Hornsby, who is on tour with Peter King, says that he saw more drops in Miami than he's accustomed to in other places. He speculates it might be due to the increased contact at this practice (first with live tackling). Charles Clay dropped three balls, he said. He also said that it looked to his eyes like Garrard was way, way ahead in the competition.
yeah of course the day we have some national media in house its a pretty bad day for our QBs... we'll get to hear about how we're gonna suck even more now...
I think Moore's day of taking number 1 snaps should be dwindling. It seems like he fumbles everyday at practice and typically throws at least one interception.
FWIW I don't think they took away from it that all our QBs were bad...just Matt Moore...and the receivers were dropping the ball a ton.
Hornsby thought Wallace stood out most among the receivers. He said the drops were just drops, not the result of bad QB play. The pace was obviously the thing that stood out the most. Fastest he's seen so far.
What I gather from Moore being given snaps is... - by the time this staff declares the starter no one will be able to say there is uncertainty about who deserved it. Moore and Garrard are getting ever chance to represent themselves. - its possible that if we were angling to a possible trade of Moore, having him work for the national media could help... Except we all know he sucks in practice so if they thought that they are dumb and wrong I can't wait for preseason games. True assessment.
This isn't an excuse ,but I think the WR's have to get used to the pace and until thye become more acclimated to it we will see more drops than we want. Conditioning for the body and the mind , get the concentration level higher and sharper. If we don't see improvement through stages , then we start to worry , to me , right now , this is to be somewhat expected.
"Philbin on Ryan Tannehill: He's so under control at times, cool and collected." "Philbin said Ryan Tannehill handles presnap situation in a "relaxed manner." Needs to get him in games so he can see "a true 40 sec clock" I simply don't trust Omar when it comes to Tannehill, I believe there are some alterior motives going on..
It almost sounds like Moore knows he's the red-headed step child and is thus practicing with that mentality. It can't be an encouraging feeling when you come off what you felt was a good & promising season yet you know you're days are numbered.
I think the competition is fair. If he wants to be the starter he needs to prove he can be. If you're right and that's his attitude (I think you are btw) then he doesn't deserve to start.
Sometimes I wonder how much these beat writers pay full attention. Volin tweeted that Chris Clemons didn't practice today. However, he's got an interview on the team page where he's in pads, and said he was back out there today... Glad to hear he's back, but it really makes me question these guys when they tweet updates (or write articles).
To me, he doesn't have the confidence. That's what I haven't felt from him. He's very intense but that doesn't mean confidence. When David Garrard got here he just knew he was going to be the guy. That doesn't mean he's right, but he knew it. I don't think Moore approached it the same way, and as a result I think the players are gravitating toward David more than Matt.
I agree. I wonder if a case can be made that the number one difference between a good to great qb and a bad to horrible qb on the pro level is attitude? Do they believe they are the guy and are still humble enough to work? If that could be measured somehow, I think it would be an accurate predictor.
The thing with Garrard is that he looks to be in the best shape he has been in for years on end. If he is THAT healthy...whose to say he doesn't reclaim some to most of that Pro Bowl caliber talent. Not likely to happen....but it could. Still, I think it is safe to say we will see Tannehill getting starts before the end of the season.
Thing that concerns me is back trouble of the type he had has a way of showing back up, especially with him being a QB that is more of the rough and tumble variety. I do believe that the stars are aligned to some degree where he could personally put Comeback Player of the Year type talent on display. But the receivers unit is so poor, it might not translate.
Do you think he could be taking the only stance around against, just to create a buzz, make it more interesting?
No. I think he's been seeing Ryan Tannehill be a little slower and a little more clunky in his execution of the offense than Garrard and Moore since OTAs, and so he's sensitive to seeing continued signs of it. You're assuming he's wrong, that Tannehill is actually leading this competition. I don't think he is. I think Garrard is still leading the competition.
Why do you say this? I would trust Omar's eye over a lot of local beat reporters... I also think most of the local beat reporters suck but nonetheless.
I think you're inflating Garrard's talent level somewhat. Garrard has never been a top three or four QB in the AFC, which is what a Pro Bowl caliber QB must be.
When you watched Sunday's practice in person... and then read afterwards that Omar came away thinking Matt Moore was the best QB at that practice… it really hurts his credibility IMO.
He just has a different way of seeing things, that's all. I run into that so often in draft evaluation it's mind boggling but it is what it is. Incidentally he and his partner Izzy agree that Tannehill isn't using the middle of the field or throwing to his tight ends enough. I swear to effing god if Ryan Tannehill becomes yet another quarterback that is completely allergic to the seam...
Omar may be somewhat knowledgeable about what he's seeing, but he has such a weird and unpleasant quirk to his personality, I think it distorts his reporting sometimes. His tweets display this quirkiness a lot IMO, and I really end up taking them with a grain of salt.
