NationalFootballPost @FootballPost Steinbach agrees to deal with Dolphins http://www.nationalfootballpost.com...ns.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter
Wow, that's interesting. My one question would be whether he's healthy or not. This is the nail in the coffin for John Jerry.
Eric Steinbach has been a bad player for a long time, and I don't understand why they would sign him over Jake Scott or even like maybe a rusty old-school style aluminum garbage can.
Back surgery is always a fickle thing...a 80% Steinbach at RG is still much better than Jerry I think.
I'd really strenuously disagree with that. John Jerry last year was better than Eric Steinbach has been in a very long time. I don't think I've seen many linemen who have stuck around as awful, highly paid starters since maybe Alan Faneca.
My opinion of John Jerry is so low that I would perfer YOU play RG than him...I will not discount that having the worst starting RT next to him didnt hurt his play though.
He might be a bad player, or maybe he was just unhealthy, I don't really know...but you have to look at the timing of this. The players just weighed in this morning. Eric Steinbach gets signed by afternoon. Someone came in overweight and my guess is it's John Jerry.
He used to be good. You never know with these vet guards though. One season they can be ****ty and the next good. So doesn't hurt to bring him in. Not holding my breath though
I don't think he would be expected to start over Artis Hicks, IMO. On the PFF grading, have to take it with a grain of salt. I reviewed Artis Hicks' games in Washington as a Guard in 2010 and came out totally disagreeing with their grading, not just the season long -9.0 grade but the individual game grades.
If Jerry is gone, then Hicks moves from the "top backup" (as the team reported viewed him to be) to the de facto starting RG. Steinbach becomes camp depth. The latter, IMO.
Definitely, but I'm more addressing the media angle. I don't doubt that Hicks has been penciled in as the starter ever since the Jake Scott visit ended.
Which Jake Scott visit? He's visited twice. To me that points to health being the issue not asking price. Or maybe a combination (e.g. "we're not paying you that much in your current condition"). I think they gave John Jerry a chance by making him the starter in the very first OTAs but that quickly ended and Hicks has been the starter since then.
have no doubt that Eric Steinbach is an excellent move for Maimi my only thought is that it might be a good time to move Incognito to RG & let Steinbach play the left, where he has most of his success at through the years looks good to me.
either way, I believe Steinbach will be the other starting guard. only real question now is who wins the start @ RT? got a feeling Murtha might be the hungrier of the two & will be the RT in 2012
I doubt Steinbach will start. I think he's here to blow some wind up John Jerry's skirt and more than likely overtake him in camp. I think the starter at Right Guard is Artis Hicks.
It's not about Steinbach being hurt. I'm going back a couple years with NFL Rewind, and it's the same thing. He just gets his *** kicked in the run game, all day e'ryday. There's an adage in zone blocking about losing ground to gain ground-Steinbach takes that to the extreme by getting driven into the backfield mercilessly.
PFF doesn't like finesse linemen at all. If they're someone who athletically gets to their blocks very well but doesn't do much more than get into the way, they're pretty harsh on them.
Whats your opinion on Hicks ckp? Think he will be solid or a liability? While I love Ireland, it's annoying that we have spent so many draft picks on lineman and we still don't have the unit set yet. My guess is we will draft a Guard next year within the top 3 rounds.
