It's not skewing the salary stuff the new cba is real and even if you put aside the luxury tax in the 3rd year of this contract Lin would be making as much in 1 year as wade made last year do you really believe Lin will ever be that caliber a player no chance. His ceiling is NBA starter hes more likely to end up as a bench role player if you really feel that's worth paying him 8 mil avg ok but I strongly disagree.
Lin isn't making what Wade makes. And yes if he averages 15 and 6 he is a 8M per year guy in the NBA. The NBA has gone ridiculous with its contracts. Lets stop pretending the Knicks care about a million here and there anyways. At 23 years old he is worth the risk on a short term deal. at worst you bite the bullet year 3 but years 1 and 2 he was a bargain.
No way in hell is he a bargain the league has cheap rookie contracts for a reason go look up how much wade and lebron made at age 23. The league is set up so you don't have to pay huge money to unproven players the guy has played 25 games and he got hurt he didn't even last half a season in the NBA.
8M per is not a huge risk in todays NBA. There is no other way to put it than that. And the guy is a FA and they dont have the luxury of a rookie contract so putting him in an impossible situation doesnt make sense. I'm going to make this simple for you........Lins potential >>>>>>>>>> Feltons potential
And the only times that Tebow actually looked good is when opposing defenses played prevent. Thats the only reason Denver beat us.
Felton playing with out melo also put up 17 and 9 with only 3 to in that new york pg system whats your point that Dantoni makes bad pgs look good? At least Felton was a lottery pick his major issue is hes a fat idiot who never plays in shape that could potentially be fixed.
Felton doesnt have potential, he's peaked. With Lin you can have him learn from Kidd, and even play with him at the same time. Because of Lins size he can play on the floor at the same time as Kidd more easily than Felton. So its a lineup perk as well.
There's no skewing about it. Lin just isn't that good. I've already proven that. Unless every team in the league forgets how to defend PG's, or D'Antoni is hired by the Rockets, he's not going to be that good of a basketball player.
The Knicks did not mess up and the contract for the Knicks would not have been 8M per. Its not that simple. With RFA's a team, in this case Houston can offer Lin 3 years and 25M. For Houston the salary is a straight 8.3M per. For the Knicks (or any team who owns the rights to said RFA) the contract gets broken down the way its actually paid out. Lins contract calls for 5M, 5.2M and 14.8M. The 14.8M in year 3 projects as a 35-40M cap hit including luxury tax penalties as a team that by year 3 of this contract will be a tax paying team for a 3rd straight year. If youre a tax paying team 4 out of 5 years at any point the penalties go up SEVERELY. There is a reason that no one is on the books for the Knicks for the 2015-2016 season. I know its 3 years off but even Dolan wants no part of that. For all intents and purposes the clause may as well be the Dolan Clause or the Free Spending Idiot Owner Clause the way the luxury tax penalties are set up. I suspect Lin WILL do ok in Houston since McHale runs a variation of the D'Antoni offense but I suspect it will be a lot of empty numbers since that team projects to be pretty bad as it is right now. The only things I like abut the current Rockets roster are Jeremy Lamb and Terrence Jones. Everything else is blah.

No the Knicks messed up, as usual. Its ok they'll be somewhere in the 5-7 seed and get bounced in the first round again. Lin wont be a star but he's going to be a fine PG and will be just fine without the Knicks, I'd even argue better without them because he wont be blamed for their eventual failure. Hope they enjoy their fatty PG over the 23 year old potential
LOL, youre funny. The Knicks didnt mess up. They got poison pilled. That can happen to any team, even, wait for it, your Miami Heat. Instead the Knicks did something intelligent giving up the equivalent of 0 NBA talent for a guy, Felton, who had great chemistry with amare for the 35 games they were together in 2010-11 and averaged 18-8. So even though Felton had a crap year last year with portland, part of that was because he let his emotions get the better of him when he was dealt from NY where he wanted to be. And yes, I know for a fact Felton wanted to be here. Lin is a nice player but deeply flawed. Felton is a nice player and has his flaws. One player is signed for 3 years and 25M and would have cost the Knicks over 50M over the course of his contract while the other is signed for 3 years and 10M and will cost the Knicks no more then 15M including luxury tax penalties. Its debatable whether Lin is even better then Felton (Im frankly not sure though I tend to lean towards no) and its certain that Lin is not 3x better like he would cost.
One is 23 with potential, the other is 28 and fat. Have fun with the fatty. NY has already admitted they wanted Lin but Dolan got upset like a little baby and passed on emotion not his brain. Its obvious the right call was Lin with Kidd......they went in another direction. Then again they dont make many smart moves so this is no surprise.
Honestly I'd probably have kept Lin. Yes he's flawed, but his flaws are mainly all fixable ones through experience and hard work. He at least has the POTENTIAL to be worth that money, and his marketing/jersey sales would eat up a lot of the extra money he cost.
No, I think he's got the potential to be a complete PG though. Im sorry but you aren't going to a Finals series for at least five more years anyway. Might as well have spent three finding out.
Felton was going to sign "Yo Lin sorry to see you go, would have loved to play with you into the future. Got any tips on good spots to eat? If you find any in Houston let me know too. Hear they have good bbq. Oops gotta go pizzas here."
One is 23 but: - cant go left - needs picks to get past his man - cant dribble very well - poor assist to TO ratio - Has a contract with 3x as much including the luxury tax penalties - is a poor defender - is physically weak - doesnt fight over picks - made a lot of circus shots but his FG % dropped noticeably without D'Antoni the other is 28 but: - showed chemistry with Amare - performed equally as well at lin statistically with fewer TO's - better dribble skills - yes he has weight issues but thats actually easier to fix then all of Lin's issues - is at least a good pressure defender who fights over picks They probably did want Lin but guess what, they made a better business decision which Ill explain below. Actually no the jersey sales and marketing wouldnt eat up the extra money. The season tickets for this year were sold out before Linsanity even started. And with the way the revenue sharing works in the new CBA the money from all of Lin's jersey sales and marketing would have been shared amongst the league much more equally then in the past. This wasnt a case of Lin's contract would pay for itself. Felton has been a pretty good player in the league before and hes still young enough to be that again. Lin may or may not be a better player. But should Lin not live up to his contract his contract will be impossible to move. Should Felton not live up to his contract at just 3.3M per he is still easily moveable.
Interesting about the CBA. I just dont see the point. The Knicks aren't going anywhere in the next three years either way. I'd rather keep the player with the higher ceiling, even if it costs more. There has to be SOME WAY to make the salary work.
So the Knicks aren't going anywhere no-matter whether they sign Lin or not, even if he hits this "high ceiling," yet they're supposed to pay out $50M extra just to go nowhere? I don't see how you don't see the point, you made the case for not signing Lin with the bold.
Theyre paying over 200M for Melo and Amare to go nowhere. They have the highest paid frontcourt in the league to go nowhere. So the answer is yes. The risk/reward was worth it.
Well I just find it funny that people are trying to make this about cost when the Knicks have never really cared about cost and Dolan said it wasn't cost. Dolan said he was bitter the way it played out, and thats why Lin isn't in NY right now. It has nothing to do with basketball or money........Dolans pride.
No I didn't. You're acting like after three years he disappears off the face of the planet. You're taking the time to find out if he's part of the long term building plan. If what you said were true, they may as well field a D-League team.
