Cap space is always useful even if you can't lure a free agent on your own.

Cap space allows you to be a player in trades in which you don't have to send any salary back. Can be very useful if you make a trade for a star caliber player and have to take back a bad contract to get the deal done.

The reality is that the Knicks have to overpay to get anyone to play there. Why deal with all that pressure and still lose to the Heat and/or Bulls?

When have star-caliber players been traded to teams like Orlando?

Orlando should focus on getting as many draft picks as possible. That is their only hope at getting another superstar.

Orlando at one time was a premiere destination and conceivably could be again. And again, I'm not talking superstars because those guys rarely get traded period.

But take Milwaukee. Not a premiere destination on any level. Yet they had capspace and one attractive piece and added a borderline all star like Monta ellis.

    It can be done

If your plan to get back to the NBA Finals is to sign Monta Ellis, thats an awful plan.

I understand that cap space has value. But its not what you build a team around unless you are signing superstars.

Or re-signing your own group of good players. See the Pacers model.

Truth is cap space is always valuable. Tons of teams in the nba have had good success building from within and are respectable. Pacers, Utah, spurs, have all done good. Heck even the sixers are respectable.

Camby to NY on a 3 year/13.2 mil deal. What's the deal with giving a 38 year old a 3 year contract?

The Knicks now have over 82 million committed for 2015 if they match Lin's deal on 7 players.

    LOFL.

This almost guarantees that Amare will be traded at the deadline for nothing or at the end of the season for expirings.

3 year deal for Camby??? 4 years for Novak? It's rough being a 76ers fan, but damn am I glad to not be a Knicks fan. Bringing back Lin would be the icing on the cake for me.

That was a sign and trade btw. Douglas, Harrellson, and Jordan to Houston. Knicks paying Douglas' salary.

And Houston gets NY's 2nd round picks in 2014 and 2015.

Because winning here with all the pressure...is unlike anything else. Every athlete who performs here learns to believe it because its true. Everything is scrutinized. Everything is under a microscope. If you can perform here, everything else is cake. Its not for everyone though. This city has eaten some players alive....
For 4 years? Thats silly. This is the type of stupidity that landed the Knicks in cap hell in the first place.

Theyre keeping him. Unfortunately. Id let him walk. Sure he may get you a ton of endorsement money but Im not a big believer. Id trade him the first day he was eligible to be dealt.

Yea, well stupidity has been a problem as long as James Dolan has been there.

That may not be the worst thing. Gotta take a step back to move forward sometimes.

Knicks are fighting national irrelevancy and soon to be irrelevancy in their own city. That leads to dumb decisions. I think NY's plan was like the underpants gnomes

    1. Get Carmelo
    2. ?
    3. win championships

    Well, it was more like:

    1. Hire Isaiah.
    2. Have Isaiah get Carmelo.
    3. Championship.

I think the ? is a better plan than anything having to do with Isaiah, lol.

If I didn't hate them I'd almost feel bad for the Knicks. Just when they finally get a superstar and maybe things are turning a team moves to Brooklyn and might end up being the 2nd or 3rd best team in the league, not just the East.

Well when the other two players are D-Will and Howard it mitigates JJ.

And JJ isn't exactly Vince Carter when it comes to destroying franchises.

I'm going to say it: Dwight Howard is as overrated as Joe Johnson is overpaid. Ever year we hear about how Howard has developed his offensive game, and nothing happens. For a big guy, he doesn't seem to impose himself the way his physical talent would suggest he can.

A Nets core consisting of Howard - Johnson - Williams loses in the second round to either the Heat or Bulls. It's the ultimate glass ceiling.

I agree that howard should be alot more dominant than he is. Shaq routinely dropped 40 at his age.

But he is certainly very good. And D-Will is one of the ebst PG in the league. They are a nice fit together.

They aren't as good as the Heat, but they would certainly be a team that could reach the conference finals. D-Will once took a agrbage Utah team to the WCF

I love the kid, being a Providence College nut, but during the season he was doing real well, avg about 17 a game splitting time with Morrow, then he got hurt, and his year went downhill.....

needs to work on his defense but the kid and flat out score...and is only 22...

again my stance on the kid comes more about where he played CBB than anything...

Howard is a good player but I would not build a team around him. Yes, he is good defensively and can rebound like a monster. But when I think of an elite player, I think of someone I can rely on down the stretch in a game, and Howard isn't that to me. Nobody is worried about Howard taking over a game at the end; combined with his atrocious FT shooting and, IMO, an offensive game that isn't to be feared night in and night out, and you have someone not worth a max contract who will potentially handicap your team for the foreseeable future.
