just because we're in the doldrums projected offensive starts for 2012 QB-2 9 Garrard, David QB 17 Tannehill, Ryan QB RB-4 22 Bush, Reggie RB 33 Thomas, Daniel RB 35 Messam, Jerome FB 44 Miller, Lamar RB TE-3 80 Fasano, Anthony TE 42 Clay, Charles FB/TE 84 Egnew, Michael TE WR-6 82 Hartline, Brian WR 15 Bess, Davone WR 16 Cunningham, B.J. WR 10 Gates, Clyde WR 83 Fuller, Jeff WR 85 Matthews, Rishard WR OL-7 77 Long, Jake T 68 Incognito, Richie G/C 51 Pouncey, Mike C 76 Murtha, Lydon G/T 71 Martin, Jonathan T 73 Hicks, Artis T/G 74 Jerry, John G/T four more possibilities/probabilities to complete the offensive roster: 1) 62 Cook, Ryan G/C 2) 19 Naanee, Legedu WR 3) 88 Mastrud, Jeron TE 4) 34 Thigpen, Marcus RB thank you, MrClean for your astute observation the Philbin Group: 2012 will be the year of the coach, the talent is there
That's only 22 offensive players. Usually the balance between offense and defense is a little closer than that. It would mean keeping 28 defensive players, with 3 specialists. I'd say more likely 2-3 more offensive players somewhere in there.
four more possibilities/probabilities to complete the offense: 1) 62 Cook, Ryan G/C 2) 19 Naanee, Legedu WR 3) 88 Mastrud, Jeron TE 4) 34 Thigpen, Marcus RB
#62 Cook, Ryan G/C could easily/probably be the the 8th man the offensive line will be the key to our success. everything starts in the trenches I think we could have a top offensive line going into the season molding it into an elite offensive unit by the end of the year: Long - Incognito - Pouncey - Murtha - Martin
my speculation: 1) we'll only carry 2 QBs & one on the P/S. 2) don't think we'll carry more than 8 OL this year 3) we may carry a 4th TE & an extra WR & RB
We'll probably keep all 3 Qbs, i could be wrong....... but Garrard has health concerns and if Tannehill is as raw as we expect..... they wont dump Moore. Its more likely that Garrard doesnt make it. Moore is here on a backups salary anyway. Green Bay carried 5 tight ends.... it was mentioned that tight ends put themselves at risk every play in philbins offense. I would think we'll have atleast 4. I'm hoping Les Brown can put it all together and make the cut, the guy has some freakish talent. With Miler,Bush, egnew, clay all splitting wide we may go light on Wrs. I believe the pack kept 5 good ones. I think the roster looks rock solid..... The offense has more talent than it has since 2002 or even the 90s. Just imagine if we still had Marshall.
I agree. I can see them keeping all three QBs to decrease the probability that Tannehill might be thrown into the fire should the projected starter go down. I also think Moore will wind up starting. Here is where the crystal ball (more a 'scientific wild @$$ guess) gets murky. I could see a 5 WR/3 TE split, or even a 4/4 split depending on if one of the TE shows fantastic over match ability. My usual interest is in the BigUglies and the ones doing the toting of the rock. Here is where we split the blanket, Kemo Sabe. And then it was only that last sentence. The first two I am glad to say correspond to my thoughts at this stage of the season. However, I am glad Marshall has taken his traveling drop show somewhere else (except in the AFCE.) I love to imagine what V. Lombardi would have done with a WR who demanded the throws and still dropped some really big ones AND THEN also had all of the sturm and drang revolving around him that Marshall did. For Forty Nine million dollars, one could reasonably expect that he could keep his eye on the ball - on field and off field.
23 please, Murtha has already been demoted. I realize he now has a very cool tat on his left arm but fact remains, he is still Lydon Murtha. Your hope/prayers that he will somehow become an offensive guard are completely in the same realm as having a wet dream when we all were young. Murtha IF he makes this team will most likely be inactive on game days. Injuries of course aside.
If Matt Moore doesn't get onto this roster and win the starting position then there's something really wrong in Miami. If they only keep two QB's then I would expect Gerrard not to make the cut.
What's interesting to me is that they signed him to a three-year deal. I'm not certain why it wasn't a one-year deal if they weren't serious about developing him. However, there may be someone else here with an inside scoop, or just more insight than I have. It could have simply been the deal they had to give him to beat other interested teams. If anyone here has more info, I'd like to hear it.
The problem isn't what IS wrong in Miami... it is what WAS wrong at the QB position last season. Pennington was done. Henne got hurt. Moore was simply better than JP Losman. Yep... THAT JP Losman. The Phins now have a better veteran QB in Garrard, and a MUCH better prospect in Tannehill, both of whom need the practice reps. Outside of an injury, I don't see Moore on the Dolphins' roster come week 1.
unnecessarily crude analogy having said that : 1) easier for an athletic linesman to move from Tackle to Guard than vice versa 2) Murtha is the total package: strength, speed & quickness. he can play Guard & is the only one that has the capacity to pull from that position 3) I believe the five best linesmen on the roster will start & Murtha is one of them all I did is make an educated guess @ a possible/probable line-up, this is a coaching decision (if John Jerry wins the start than Martin will compete with Murtha @ RT) Long - Incognito - Pouncey - Murtha - Martin
Do you not agree that the offensive talent is better than its been since 2002 ? I was just throwing it in there that we could have had marshall as well... I won't miss him either. You know, i forgot he was signed for 3 years ! Interesting indeed.
Outside of injury..... Garrard is of course more likely to get hurt after the final cuts. The big question is whether Tannehill is ready or not. If they want to get him experience year one, than keeping all 3 doesnt make much sense. But i think they would rather not to be forced to play him too early. Moore's contract is very cap friendly and he's no slouch. If they drop him I would have to assume that Tannehill will start early this season ! I know I sound pessimistic about Garrard, but was a big fan of the signing when most where fuming about the manning/flynn fiasco. Just very skeptical about his durability at this stage. Thanks bud ! Whether its Garrard/Tannehill or Moore/Tannehill or all 3... very excited about the QBs. The line is stacked. I think our skill position players are vastly under-rated.... and we have the right system in place, finally. There's reason to be optimistic that this can get turned around sooner than later. With even a top 20 offense we could do some damage ! It will come down to scoring touchdowns tho and we don't really know where they're going to come from...... yet.
He had this left arm all tatted up last year. That isn't new. The concern with Murtha is staying healthy. If he is, then he is likely to be one of the two game day reserves if he does not start. If healthy he is our 3rd best tackle and able to play both sides. Probably have a swing tackle and a swing guard/center as the two game day reserve OL.
Garrard won't make our final roster. He was signed as insurance before the draft in case we didn't get Tanny or Weeden. Moore is younger, more durable, similar talent level. Easy decision
I have felt all along that Garrard will be the starter early in the season because his skill set is much better suited to the WCO than Moore. Unless the coaching staff has absolutely no desire to see Tannehill as the backup to Garrard, I just don't see Moore making the final roster. They could use his two and a half millions dollars somewhere else on the roster. The Dolphins are rebuilding, even though they won't admit it. Therefore keeping only one veteran QB on the roster and letting Tannehill learn as the backup makes more sense then keeping both Moore and Garrard and Tannehill just holding a clipboard and not getting a lot of practice snaps during the regular season. The 2012 season isn't about winning for the Dolphins organization. It is about preparing Tannehill and the rest of the younger players for the future. I see the Dolphins finishing 5-11 or possibly 6-10 in 2012 and ending up with another top ten draft selection in the 2013 draft. By 2014 the Dolphins should be ready to compete for a playoff spot if they have productive drafts and free agency signings in 2013 and 2014. Until 2014, the Dolphins will be competing just to stay out of the cellar in the AFC East.
I don't see it. First, if the QB's come out of TC even remotely close to each other, I see Tannehill starting. Garrard's window is passed. I'd rather not invest the time into the guy and he hurts his back again. I'd rather just let Moore get comfortable in the offense and he and Tannehill battle for the starting spot.
Don't see how Garrard makes the team. QB: Moore Tannehill Devlin We will keep 3, IMO. Naanee will make this team
I don't see Tannehill being ready to start early in the season. In fact I don't think he will be ready to start at all during his first season in the NFL. It has been stated all along that he is going to take some time to adjust to the NFL and I believe that. I think having Tannehill start for a team which is near the bottom of the NFL will only decrease the chances of him ever making it at the NFL level. The present coaching staff was not here last year and they have no vested interest in Moore as their QB in 2012. I believe that Garrard was signed because Philbin sees him as a better short term answer for the WCO than Moore is. Moore played well in Carolina when he was the backup and ended up getting the starting job in 2009. Yet in 2010, when he was named the starter in preseason, he played terrible as the teams starting QB during the regular season. I see both Garrard and Moore as nothing but backup QB's in the NFL at this time but I just happen to see Garrard as more suited to the offense the Dolphins will run this season. Perhaps Tannehill will get some playing time later in the season when the Dolphins are clearly out of the playoff chase. This will allow the coaching staff to at least see if he is learning the position at the NFL level. I just don't see him becoming the full time starter for at least a year and possibly two years if the coaching staff feels he has what it takes to be a starter in the NFL. If on the other hand Tannehill does not look like the long term answer, the Dolphins can always move up and draft Matt Barkley in the 2013 draft.
23, Murtha is going to be lucky to even be activated on game day. Add to that, Murtha is going to be very lucky if he even makes the roster. Thats fact, not an educated guess. Injuries aside, the real battle in camp is going to see who actually makes the roster, Garner or Murtha. The next battel will be to see who is actually activated on game day amongst ( allowing for whoever makes the roster ) Garner, Murtha or Hicks.
I agree. I have no idea why so many people on here seem to think Murtha is going to be an upgrade on the offensive line. He has done absolutely nothing since he was drafted in the seventh round by the Detroit Lions to show that he will be a quality offensive lineman in the NFL. I see him only making the roster as a possible backup and like you, I think he will be on the inactive roster on game days for the most part. While I am not real high on Jerry as the RG. I think he would be better on the offensive line as a starter than Murtha. I think the RG position is going to remain a major weakness during the coming season and it will be a position of extreme need going into the 2013 draft.
True, Jerry is better then Murtha. Problem with Jerry is he is about 40 lbs over the 320 limit everyone here put on how much our Olineman should weigh. He is not playing bad and as I mentioned before. Murtha has already been demoted to the 3s and Martin is not even in camp yet.
Murtha (6-foot-7, 315 pounds) reiterated his desire Friday to compete for the starting job at right tackle. "When it comes down to positions on the field you can't say, 'I'm going to be playing this position or that position.' I came into the league wanting to be a starting-caliber player. I believe it's my time. I've worked my butt off, and I want to be the starting tackle for the Dolphins." http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/...-believe-its-my-time-20120518,0,3683256.story I believe the top five offensive linesmen will start & Murtha is in the top four. Martin & Jerry will vie for the #5 spot & Murtha compete accordingly. in my opinion, where Murtha plays has more to do with how Martin & Jerry's performance in the training camps & pre-season than anything else. we shall see how things unfold. in the end it is a coach's decision not a fan's speculation that counts. my best guess on the offensive line to date: Long - Incognito - Pouncey - Murtha - Martin or Long - Incognito - Pouncey - Jerry - Murtha
Garrard was almost signed last year before we had Philbin. Jeff likes Garrard and wanted him last year but he just wasn't healthy enough. The thing with both Moore and Garrard is they both have had bad seasons in the past that can be linked to injuries. Most people don't know or forget that Matt more had an injured arm for that terrible 2010 season. Garrard wasn't 100% healthy for his last two playing seasons. I think we go into the season with all three. Garrard is the better QB IMO, but I'm not sure he can stay health for a full season. It will be interesting to see how they all do with better offensive coaching and game plans. I hope that Tannehill can get some experience in the preseason this year and ride the bench and learn the rest of the year.
23 its really nice what Murtha said to the press. And, I understand he has a really cool new tat but fact still remains. Murtha is not going to be starting ( injuries aside ) anymore on this offensiv line then you or I are. Lydon Murtha in no way shape or form has the capability of playing offensive right or even left, guard in the NFL. With his history and believe me, I am a Nebraska fan, he will get dinged up sooner rather then later. Kids been injured almost every year with exception of maybe 2 total since h has been in college. He has the size, yes, he is athletic in shorts and T shirt, Yes but what he lacks is the basic fundamental thats needed to be successful in the NFL. BALLZ and Football talent. Steady football talent. not a blip in practice or the games. He did play decent in pre season last year, against vanilla defenses and backups. Sorry Amigo, cannot buy into this kid starting unless its out of desperation.
don't know how this will all play out having said that i believe the three big offensive decisions/competitions will be @ QB, RG & RT (my bad) on defense: safety & defensive end will be hotly disputed the good thing is we have the material to coach up in 2012 let them compete
Yes we do have talent. Regardless of a lot of people on this site knocking the team, we have talent. Do we have a Marino ? No, Do we have a Kick or Czonka ? No but we certainly have talent. Remember this name MAURICE PURIFY. The NFL team that takes a reach on this kid is going to be rewarded big time. To be honest, once the RS is taken care of , this is going to be a very ,very veeeeeery good offensive line. AND, if Murtha makes it as a starter, I promise I owe you a beer and a brat for every home game.
garner, hicks, jerry, murtha & martin are all in the mix for the two coveted right positions on the offensive line. you can use all the vulgarity you want, not all the tea in china will make a difference in this competition. they will start the five best linesmen, determined through competition not pedigree or popularity. I have no dog in this fight, just an opinion. murtha is much underrated & will make his bones in 2012. however what I want is the best five starting without prejudice. I contend this competition is a critical as that of the QB competition it all begins in the trenches Philbin will make the right choice got too much vested in the Big-Uglies to screw it up
One would hope that some combination of Hicks, Jerry, Murtha, Gardner and Martin could provide a significant upgrade to the right side replacing Columbo and Carey. As far as your prediction for the WR spot goes, I’m not counting Naanee, Moore, Wallace or Pruitt out just yet. I'm most interested in the OL and WR battles going into camp and who will step up and take their spot.
