$60 should do it with the Ireland discount.

Well, I suppose I am one of your "reactionary fans" and I think it's a great move.
In fact, aside from maybe hiring Joe Philbin, I think it's the best move this franchise has made all offseason.

Resigning Wake and Soliai for cheap is less important than Hard Knocks?

    Am I in Jersey?

It was a distraction for the Jets. It was a distraction for the Bengals. It was a distraction for the Cowboys. So now we're going to put our first year head coach and rookie QB under the national microscope like that? I'll watch it but I don't think it's a particularly good idea...just bad timing.

Look at those teams without Hard Knocks. See any other similarities?

They all have a history of employing idiots and bad ownership/coaching. Miami is def not on that level.

I agree, this was all Ross. He is doing everything he can to sell more season tickets and I assume he thinks this exposure for his team will help ticket sales.

I don't see Ireland being happy about the Dolphins being on a television show every week during the preseason. Philbin is just going along with what the man signing his paycheck wants and I can certainly understand that. I just have to wonder since it is first year as an NFL head coach, if he really needs the added pressure which this TV show will create?

Eventually Ross will hopefully learn that it isn't bringing in celebrity owners, building dancing locations, or having his team on HBO which will get fans to once again want to attend games in South Florida. The only thing which is going to increase tickets sales is a winning football team. The sooner the team starts winning consistently again, the sooner fans will want to attend games and ticket sales will increase.

Not on that level. Their downfalls have nothing to do with Hard Knocks.

Even if a few more seats are sold because the organization is on HBO, this will only be a short term solution if the Dolphins don't put a winning product on the field.

I am not opposed to the team being on the HBO series. I just don't see how it will be a long term positive for the organization if the Dolphins end up finishing below 500 again next season, which I think is a very good possibility.

Only bad thing would be all the press the new o-line coach will be getting will result in him getting a better gig sooner rather than later.

I think Philbin will come across well on TV. He's got a really funny dead pan sense of humour.

I'm looking forward to things like how he would deliver inspired speaches, if Marino/Alumni will address the players, camp battles, players acting a fool, cheerleaders, Ireland being a jerk, and I'm wondering if they'll show any players get a dressing down.

I'm really starting to like the Philbin hire. He seems to be a master of psychological manipulation.

He's creating as many obstacles as possible during the preseason and then relying on his staff to coach the guys through them.

Last week the pace was too fast. This week there will be too many distractions. Next week, who knows?

All of this before the pads are on. Good stuff.

As I wrote on the homepage, I LOVE this.

Positives far outweight the negatives IMO.

I do have to disagree with the characterization of Hard Knocks as a reality show.

It is truly a documentary series. An extremely well-done one at that. HBO Sports doesn't do these all these things (Hard Knocks, 24/7, Real Sports, etc) because they're cheap to make (a common attraction of reality shows). Liev Schreiber doesn't work for peanuts. ;)

One interesting aspect of all this is the fact that the Dolphins coaching staff is completely new. This is the first time Hard Knocks has profiled a team that has a completely new staff.

I think that's all the more benefit to the Dolphins. Normally you've already established your practices, established your habits and the things that make you successful, and then Hard Knocks comes in and threatens to disrupt that process. I'm not saying it always does disrupt them, but it can and that's something you're worried about.

But the Dolphins haven't established those habits, that culture, that process, that demeanor. Instead of being a disruption, it's going to be part of the formation of the team's culture...and personally, I think that's a GOOD thing. People work harder if they think they're being watched. That's just simple human nature. These Hard Knocks cameras are going to be on them all the time, and coaches are going to know about things the players did and said that they otherwise wouldn't. I'm quite sure Philbin and staff will be given the unedited footage to scroll through in order to aid in the evaluation process. Billick and Rex Ryan already said the practices with Hard Knocks cameras were generally better because of that pressure to not look bad. If you're a staff that is trying to establish your culture, wouldn't THAT be the way you want to kick things off, with players all having maximum motivation to impress every second of every day they spend at the office? It wouldn't be difficult to convince the players you expect that same effort even next year when the Hard Knocks cameras aren't there...because by then that's the environment you've established...this is how things work on the Miami Dolphins, no room for error.

The only question then becomes, is the stress too much? Do players begin buckling under that strain of always being watched, where they'd have been fine and productive normally? I would put forth that this is a very low probability, because football is not a job just like any other. Football is the ultimate performance, high pressure job. Most players have limited opportunities to make an impression. If they're buckling under the strain of some cameras being on them during meetings and practices, then how are they going to react when they come in the game on 3rd & 8, the play caller has called a play which makes for a high probability that you're getting the ball against this defensive look, and this is your chance to eitehr impress the coaches and keep getting fed more opportunities, or botch it and have those opportunities taken away.

Back to the evaluation thing, another benefit to all this with respect to Philbin & staff being new is that unedited footage I talked about. Joe Philbin is all about extra evaluation. While some believe he runs practices at this breakneck pace because he plans on running a Blur offense during the season, I believe it has more to do with evaluation. Faster pace means more reps, and more reps means more evaluation when they pop in the practice footage and watch their players. Philbin admitted as much. He's heading up a new staff, and most of the guys on roster are holdovers from a previous regime. You need to know who should be here going forward and who should not. It's a terribly difficult, and terribly important initial stage in this building process. The Hard Knocks cameras just give you a ton more data points, showing you things you wouldn't have seen otherwise. When Joe Philbin said this was a "football decision" I have a feeling this is exactly what he was talking about. I have a feeling the HBO people talked to him about this, and/or Philbin talked to some other coaches that had been through it and they pointed that out to him.

Here I've been talking about the advantages of doing Hard Knocks in the 1st year of a new regime like I'm some smart guy that figured something out, but I'm now listening to Joe Philbin's press conference where he announced Hard Knocks, and he flat out states it. He said that Ross even tried to talk him out of doing Hard Knocks right away, saying jeez you know you're a 1st year guy, are you sure you can handle it, etc...and then Philbin said well actually I think it's better to do this in the 1st year as opposed to the 2nd or 3rd.

My interpretation is that Steve Ross made it plain that he wants to do Hard Knocks at some point, and Joe Philbin thought it would be best to do it right away when the advantages are greater. He'll use the extra footage from the HBO people to help make his evaluations, and he'll use the added pressure on the players knowing they're always being watched to help install the kind of work ethic and pressure to perform environment that he wants on his team.

I believe there is a much more deeper angle to the reasoning behind us doing this show, when you have a fanbase like ours in this type of city, you always will have to find new ways of generating new fans and excitement..

I think we have a bottom line situation, a weak minded man,not so intelligent may not be able to stop the show from becoming a distraction to some players, a strong minded intelligent man can turn it into a positive on many levels, just by how he deals with it himself and conveys the message to his players as to how the team is going to deal with it..

Shula said the other day, he respects the move because he believes some measures have to be taken to ensure interest and excitement because of how low the passion is for the team in this market..

My take is try to generate new fans because the ones here collectively already, are soft.

I understand that a lot of people will say wins is the only thing missing from our equation, and I completely disagree, there are some issues with this fanbase, and trying to generate some excitement and coolness to lure in new ones or reconnect to the soft ones (not our season ticket holders, their freakin awesome) is a good idea.
