Ive had this debate with friends many times: At what point do you become an American?

For example, I have a friend who is Cuban. Hes never been to Cuba, but considers himself a Cuban before all else. I tried to convince him he was American, he wasn't havin it.

I said fine then, Im British. He laughed and said that was ridiculous, I couldnt be British.

Why not I said? Because I was born here and have never even been to that country? He was at a loss for words but simply said that was different.

I was surprised to learn over the years that a LARGE majority of my non-white friends thought this. Im all for embracing your heritage but I think we take it a bit far sometimes.

Yeah my friend does speak Spanish. That seems to be the deal breaker.

 

I think in order to have both parties agree, you'd have to hyphen it. Cuban-American, Puerto Rican-American, or whatever...

 

Still a bit lame. Are you an Irish-American? Am I a British-American?

 

Yeah, but they're likely not going to call themselves American if they feel that way so that's probably the closest it'll get.

It is not, just the fact that he had to get your approval means he was thinkin it too.

 

You know when I was in college I had a professor tell us that you should always check "caucasian" on a job application no matter what ethnicity you are.

Because jobs cannot discriminate based on race, you may have a better chance of getting an interview an ultimately getting hired. Not sure if thats the case, but interesting nonetheless.

Well yeah I went to college in Tennessee so that prolly does not apply here in most cases. I think the professor meant high-paying jobs where race my be an issue for a company looking to hire someone at a 40-65K yr. salary.
