Since Irving Fryar, Ricky Williams and Daunte Culpepper were all trades, I think that Id say that Eric Green was the free agent I was most excited about when we signed him. He'd been such a great player with Pittsburgh, and then was a dud for us.

Buckley was traded for, but for past/future considerations, so we got him for nothing essentially. Irving Fryar was also a trade acquisition (as others mentioned him).

Keith Jackson was the biggest impact FA, we signed him as soon as the legal ruling went through, and he went straight into the team and "boy did he spear that one" to lead us to a blowout win over the Bills.

We've traded for more "big names" than we have signed as FAs.

I guess for FA, Jackson and Byars made me get goosy bumps, but for trades, I loved the Hugh Green trade...I thought he was going to be all-world, and he probably would have if not for the injuries...

Funny, no one mentioned the trade that sent Chris Carter to Minny for Robin Sendlein....hehehe

Actually I did, but we traded Anthony Carter not Chris Carter.

i dont think we traded for Seau but you may be right if so what did we give up for him ? I forgot about Randy Starks so he would be a guy that qualifies as a good pick up.

i'm in with the Keith Jackson and Byars signings as the most exciting, also thought that they would complete our team and get us a super bowl. Cam Wake has been, so far, one of the most successful FA signings for us in his short tenure.

I would have to say Adewale Ogunleye.
Adewale Ogunleye had 24.5 sacks over a two year period and he and Jason Taylor formed one of the most formidable pass rushing combos the Dolphins have ever had.
In 2002, Ogunleye had 57 tackles, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and 9.5 sacks (sixth in the AFC) for 62 yards in losses, in 2002 Taylor led the NFL and tied the Dolphin team record for sacks with 18.5. He also forced seven fumbles and knocked down eight more passes to go with his 69 tackles.
During the 2003 NFL season, Ogunleye led the AFC with 15 sacks, Jason Taylor followed up his All-Pro performance in 2002 with a 13-sack season in 2003.
That was 56 sacks from our two defensive ends over two years. Just think how quarterbacks must have felt facing those two on Sundays?

Conditional draft pick. As I recall, it ended up being a 4th rounder.

More proof QB is more important than anything else...we didn't even make the playoffs when JT led the league in sacks and Ricky was running ape **** over everyone.

Wasn't Keith Jackson the first FA ever after they changed the rules? Or was it Webster Slaughter and Keith Jackson was 2nd?

While he may not have been the most exciting free agent pick up at the time. The most important FA signing in the history of the Dolphins was Earl Morrall. Because without his signing, the Dolphins would have never been able finish the 1972 undefeated after Bob Griese was injured early in the season. His steady play during the nine games he played after the Griese injury held the team together until Griese was finally able to return in the playoffs.

The best trade the Dolphins ever made was also a member of that 1972 team. The trade was with the Cleveland Browns and the Dolphins ended up with Paul Warfield. The passing game was not nearly as important in that era as it is today, but Warfield is still one of the best WR in the history of the NFL and he is by far the best player ever traded for by the Dolphins organization.

I took the original question to mean which pick-up had you most excited at the time of the pick-up, not who became the best player later. I see many posts about players that generated little excitement at the time, but became important later. Was the OP asking about excitement at the time of the pick-up or subsequent excitement?
