It's been widely publicized that Texas A&M receivers dropped 79 passes last season. And for the most part I've seen people dismiss it as not Tannehill's fault. Now, I don't want to seem like I'm overreacting to 3 dropped balls in the first day of rookie mini-camp, but I'm wondering if this might be a trend with Tannehill. I'm deferring to those who know better than me, and I would like to know how much the drops are the fault of Tannehill. Does he throw a difficult to catch ball? He's only got a handful of starts at QB so it would make sense that his mechanics still need work. 79 dropped passes is a lot, and there has to be a reason for it. When the entire receiving corp is dropping passes, then in my opinion, either you have a piss poor receiving corp or it's an indictment of the QB throwing the balls. While the stat itself is brought up often, it seems to me it always just gets swept under the rug so I'm interested to see what the gurus and draftniks have to say about it.

Well, aTm did need him to play receiver at one point. That would point to the receivers being the problem. But maybe he has a touch problem.

I personally don't see how anything considered a "drop" could be the QBs fault.

The closest in my mind (and from personal experience catching passes) that I could come to blaming a QB on a drop would be if the QB were left handed.

From what I've read, Favre actually broke some fingers. How on earth could Tannehill's ball be harder to catch than that?

I think there could be an issue where timing leads to more drops- if a WR is getting passes before he expects them. But I haven't seen anything that would lead me to believe that is the case.

Some guys do throw a more catchable ball, but still, in your hands, you simply must catch it.

Lets keep in mind this a Rookie Mini Camp thats filled with Low round draft picks and undrafted Wide Receivers. At least 3 writers tweeted today how nice a ball Tannehill throws. Its not a QB Issue.

With no more information than we have, I do not see how this concern can just be dismissed. Actually, when I read of the 79 dropped balls, its the first thing that came to my mind.

Deserving of its own thread, is anyone else bothered by the fact that 85% of Miami's offense is Texas A & M's? I mean, its all out there on tape.

Almost anyone who has been an OC before has their offense out there on tape. It's almost always been about timing and execution (imo).

This. Hes still throwing to texas a&m level receivers. Lets see what happens when he starts throwing to sure hands bess. If bess drops his balls then maybe theres something wrong with Tannehill

Any pass that hits the receivers hands and its not caught is the receivers fault.

I don't believe that. Sometimes the defense just makes a good play. Also, the pass catcher could make an extraordinary effort to get his hands on a pass and still fail to pull it in.

Any "drop" is a pass catchers fault imo, but not every pass that hits a receiver's hands and isn't caught is necessarily a drop.

As an aside(and to confirm this) Bill Callahan was arrogant enough to NOT change his audibles and hand signals for the SB against Gruden.

I think it is more a generally accepted rule. As to drops, they seem to be scored like errors in baseball, meaning there is some wide discretion by the scorer.

Marino threw rockets all day long. Unless its a major adjustment you should come down with it as a receiver. Imagine Chris Carter saying " he throws it too hard".

I've watched at least 7-8 of Tannehill's full college games and seen highlights from all of them and I haven't noticed anything in his passing that would make me place the blame on him for the drops.

I have seen that happen, a Qb just loads up and guns the pass and the Wr simply does not have time to react.

Larger problem is a good Qb delivers the ball between the chest and above the thighs with the Wr heading downhill, this is one of MMoore's problems, he does not consistently do so.

A WCO style requires excellent ball placement and MMoore struggles with doing that, one of the reasons why imo he is a bad fit for what Sherman wants to do imo.

Well, of course he's not solely to blame for all of them. I suppose its possible he's not to blame for any of them, but with a number like that, you would think there's more than one contributing factor, e.g., totally crappy receivers.

What I noted more than anything else was concentration lapses by the WRs. There was a notable increase in the number of drops from 2010 to 2011 and not surprisingly Tannehill's completion percentage dropped like four points between those two years. The TAMU receivers were never abnormally consistent in their catching. They were about average maybe a little worse before 2011. But in 2011, for some reason, their drops jumped to more than twice what you would expect. Maybe there was something going on in the program or in the personal lives of the main receivers? I don't know. All I'm saying is that I didn't see anything in Tannehill's throws that would make me attribute the increase in drops to him.

the drops from college, Ive seen most of them, wereall pretty much on their wrs and I'm talking wide open drops. I saw one where there second WR, not fuller and not swop but i can't remember his name, was running a streak route, got into a hole in the zone and tanny almost hit him in theback of helmet. dude should have been looking for the ball though.

I never noticed the drops with Swope. It seemed to be everyone else but him to varying degrees. After a while, I was surprised Tanny ever threw to anyone else, since he was by far the security blanket among the receivers. Maybe Swope dropped one here and there, but my guess is his drop pct was microscopic compared to the others.

Probably it was Uzoma Nwachukwu, and that's why you couldn't remember the name. He was the 3rd WR and the fastest one they had. Wore #7.

I don't see how anyone can dismiss the fact the QB can have some fault to drops. Lack of touch and placement are on the QB, plain and simple. This is what Henne was terrible at. He would have a guy wide open on a crossing route, and while the receiver would get his hands on the ball, it was horribly placed ball, putting the WR in difficult position. While the WR should have caught it and it counts as a drop, the QB is just as much to blame IMO.

Im not saying that is whats going on with Tannehill, I havent seen enough to determine that, but it's definitely a real thing.

The number of drops came from a remark from Philbin because of his film work while they were studing Tannehill ... if memory serves. He also stated that some were directly on Tannehill, not placed properly, bad timing, and so forth. I will research to see if I can refind the link to back this up.

Fuller was the main subject concerning drops but also he was dealing with turf toe, a concussion, and other injuries thru out 2011.

If you look at Fullers production before the concussion and after it there was a real drop off so there are some valid reasons for those numbers imo.

It started before that, at least for those in the club (maybe in the mains too). I recall both KB and CK bringing it up at different times long before the draft. As the draft drew closer that's when Mortenson brought up his report and by the time we picked Tannehill the local papers were repeating it too.

I agree that it was largely Fuller. His are the drops that come to my mind most readily. Maybe it was the concussion or some other injury, but he definitely dropped far more than his fair share.

That is a lie they tell receivers so they don't go whining to the quarterback. Receivers are divas enough without telling them the truth.

Which begs the question, if Miami was concerned about Fuller's drops, unless they think it is something they can remedy, why did they sign him as a UDFA?

While Fuller wasn't one of my favorite signings, he was a decent WR in 2010. He would have definitely been drafted had he played as well in 2011. If his issues in 2011 are behind him and he returns to what he was in 2010 then he was a good signing.

While you may be right about drops persay, maybe I should have used "That" versus "The" concerning drops since the OP refered directly to the number 79 which was a number first stated by Phlbin not KB or ck with respect to them both, If we are going to dot all i's and cross all t's. A lower numer, in the 60's may be what you are referring to which was reported by A & M and possibly ck and or KB

Tanny throws a very catchable ball and is known for his tight spirals. I am an A&M fan and former student and have seen every game Tanny, Fuller and all the other A&M players have played. There is a very valid reason for A&M's drops going up in 2011. Troy Walters the WR coach. Texas A&M lost their WR coach, Nolan Cromwell, when he returned to the NFL as a wide receiver coach for the Rams. Once Walters came in our WR production CRATERED! Fuller was a huge part of the problem. He was so nails his first three years. Last season he had a hamstring injury, never ever heard of a concussion injury until this thread. The concussion was probably floated out there by his agent to save face. A&M fans are mixed about Fuller - he appeared to mail it in his last year. As for Tanny, the balls that were dropped hit players on the numbers, in the helmet, through the hands and then the helmet for interceptions. One BIG reason Fuller went from a 1st/2nd round draft pick to undrafted was that all the scouts who watched Tanny's film saw every ridiculous drop Fuller had. Watch Tanny, see Fuller drop 3 a game. This is Jeff Fuller's last shot. You will be very happy with Ryan IMO.

The "64" number was the number that was discussed here earlier (before Mort and the local papers). I generally feel that we get most of the info on this site long before the local media does. Sometimes it even seems obvious that the local media uses the topics here to find the next story.

Which basically says to me that for whatever reason, Miami sees 2011 as an anomaly for Fuller. The staff must feel that he can revert to his pre 2011 form.

Nice, have to agree, if you watch Fuller's 09-10 stuff, he is a stud, running through guys, being really physical.

In 11, he looked soft as a marshmellow, as much as I like his measurables it is hard to stuff guts/violence back into a player once they lose that edge.
