Sad sad day in yankee land. I hope Mo doesnt go out like this, but Im sure this was his final day in pinstripes. Robertson needs to stop putting people on base, but i think he is up to task. Doesnt make it any easier, Mo is one the greatest players ever to put on a uniform and doesnt deserve an ending like this. Wow, just wow......
66.2 innings last year, 40 hits, 35 walks...thats too many 2010 61.1 innings, 59 hits, 33 walks He gets into a lot of jams, but also gets out of them with K's.
Sucks about Rivera, hopefully it's not the end of his career. To go out like that just sucks. As far as who should replace him, I'd go with Soriano and keep Robertson in his set up 7th/8th inning role as many times the outs he gets in those innings are more important than the ones in the 9th.
Yeah, will chime in like all others....its a sad day in Yankeesville.....its a shame about these turn of events. I dont know whats in his heart or mind to want to fight back (with the basic knowledge that this year was his farewell tour...do you battle back just to try to do that?) It was a pleasure to watch all these years...a pleasure. Somewhat poetic to go out fully on top, with a freak injury maybe being the signal he was perhaps looking for as the final nudge! ESPN Fantasy site says it all: "Exit the Sandman": If Robertson is ready, go with it.....but who knows, lately in baseball it seems the concept of setup vs closer and who is the better of the options is scued. I dont know what will be the decision. Some interesting stats on Robertson, after averaging 19.09 pitches per inning in 2010, he cut that number to 18.20 last season and 18.00 in 2012. Throw in the fact that he has been a beast in difficult situations, including a 1-for-20, 14-K performance with the bases loaded since the beginning of 2011, .180/.291/.240 lifetime pitcher in late-and-close situations and .186/.292/.236 in high-leverage outings, and Robertson, at least statistically speaking, looks more than capable of filling in, even if beyond simply this season. Frankly, on skills alone, Robertson should be closer over Soriano, but who knows.
Welcome to the 7th inning Mr. Hughes....i shouldn't let a silly game affect my moods, but I feel sick today...
Both my daughters are with you there....and me! Posada = My youngest #1 (so she's been sad this year anyway) Jeter = My oldest #1 whats weird is with my wife, and really the whole family, its always been Mo = as "our collective" #1....its a downer right now for sure. Fingers crossed AP re-invigorates the fun...but so much on those shoulder now it may seem. P.S. on my desk, I am staring at the ball Mo tossed me @ Camden Yarks during one of his regular BP shagging sessions. Its the only one I have that has the logo from the last season of "old" Yankees stadium. Strange!
2010 I'll give you but last year, no way. That's a 1.125 WHIP. That's incredibly good. And he's been even better this year.
You guys do realize Rivera's injury is all Arod's fault right? If Arod didn't need that off day and played on Thursday Eric Chavez never would have gotten hurt and thus Jayson Nix (who hit the ball Rivera hurt himself on) never would have been called up. So it's time to blame Arod again. Full disclosure I heard this from a Yankee fan of mine who read it on Twitter, so I can't take ownership of this.
Just amazed, crushed and devastated really still, not getting over this one for a while...I wrote on here in the beginning of this thread that I was going to have a hard time coping with Rivera this year accepting he is going, it was the same with Marino, and will be with Jeter eventually... And it isnt in a "Ohh I think the Yankees can win it this year" kind of way, because they arent, but just as a fan of the sport and of watching good players dominate under every circumstance....If that makes me a geek so be it... If he comes back next year great, if he doesn't it is just awful....I had six tickets to the last game of the year, and 4 were accounted for....I was going to ask Fink and BDH if you guys wanted to come with the rest of my Sox fan buddies to go see it....It was going to be a surprise, and would have been really cool to do....I aint going now...selling them.... 2 things....... 1) Callahan on EEI actually made me laugh during all of this on the radio this morning saying "The Sox will still take Rivera with a blown knee in their pen right now" 2) Ironically as one iconic career probably died last night, another possibly could have been born with Bryce Harper's game winning hit....
Mariano on coming back: "Absolutely, im coming back, Im not going out like this" Mariano on coming back with the Yankees: "They'll want the old goat back"
But..but, relief pitchers aren't important? Rivera is a fixture in NYY stripes, I hope he does come back as he was still throwing well.
Relief pitchers are important but not important enough to spend big money for (unless it's Rivera), especially when they only throw 60 or 70 innings a year. Just look at your old pal Heath Bell, you think Marlin fans are happy about that investment? Then look at the random guys Tampa Bay is using and they're successful. You don't need big names in your pen to be successful, you need a good manager, talent and a bit of luck.
Kyle Farnsworth, Rafael Soriano, J.P. Howell, Grant Balfour, Troy Percival, Dan Wheeler, Benoit, etc.... Not exactly household names or future HOFers but they got the job done very well, especially for the amount of money they got paid. How the Rays build a bullpen is how every MLB team should build it. Hell, every MLB team should basically just copy what they do, it's incredible how well run that franchise is, especially with their extremely limited resources.
I am amazed at the consistant amount scrubs the Rays role out to close games that wind up working out... Hey they know something we dont, but Madden usually does...
Oh I think Maddon has a lot to do with that pen's success. He establishes roles for each RPer and sticks to his plan and I think he does an excellent job getting the most out of his players. I think credit also has to go to the pitching coach as well as their scouting department. And I also think the team has been lucky (not saying that to be negative) in terms of the overall health of their players and contributions of their players.
yes I agree for most of the roles, but to get what they have been getting from the likes of Farnsworth, Peralta, and now Rodney, guys who previous have been light up every which way to Sunday, that now are like Top 5 closers is just baffling, especially in that Division where the majority of teams have seen them...
Shows you how overvalued the closer role is. Unless you have Mo, you shouldn't be paying big money for a guy who's job it is to get 3 outs. Marlins are paying 10% of their payroll for a guy who throws 5% of their innings pitched when they had a plethora of very good in house options. Stupid stupid.
Especially when sometimes that closer has a lead of 2 or 3 runs. That's why I think the Yankees should leave Robertson in the set up role because more times than not the set up guy has the harder job of getting outs when he's put into a game with runners on base or has to pitch multiple innings.
Maybe the Yankees shouldn't trade with Seattle anymore.... http://bats.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/05/07/arm-troubles-for-a-yankees-prospect/?ref=sports
Yeah, but its not like Soriano as the current 7th inning cant just continue with that (or 8th), they can find a 7th inning arm (Hughes or Phelps), even Aarsdma (Post ASB) is on the horizon to pitch in middle relief, and who knows about Joba, etc. While we are certainly depleted....I can still see value with Robertson as the "final" guy with the ball for the final out....now, will be interesting if thats only 3outs...or back to the Sparky Lyle/Goose Gossage/Dave Righetti type 6outs of yore. But, if its only the last 3outs, I dont think the pen takes a bigger or smaller hit (without Mo its a hit). So, just plug along, and if thats Robertson, rack up the K's and end the game to secure the win. yeah, not a happy turn of events....but its MILB short term is all I can say right now....short term.....heck, both Banuelos and Betances have spent time on the MILB DL this year...crazy. Now, let's hope this works out from MLB standpoint: Yankees general manager Brian Cashman announced Tuesday that pitcher Andy Pettitte will be recalled from the minors to start Sunday's game against Seattle, The Star Ledger reports. Pettitte has pitched four times in the minors this year and registered a 3.71 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 17 innings. "I think everyone is in agreement, he’s not going to benefit from any more time down there (in the minors)," Cashman said.
Is Aarsdma even suppose to be back this year? I thought that's why he was signed to a 2 year deal (or a 1 year deal with an option). Even so, not sure how much you can count on him. Betances has been pretty bad this year too when he's pitched, especially with a walk and a hit per inning. It seems like he's going to end up in the bullpen, like what most scouts have been saying for awhile now. And it seems like Banuelos gets hurt at least once or twice a year.
Latest news was that Aarsdma may indeed be back post ASB. P.S. I own Robertson in my Fantasy League, I have never stated that REAL Baseball takes priority over my FANTASY success
LOL, we are just pointing out that Robinson Cano can outpitch Darnell McDonald any day of the week.......(stupid auto correct!)
I have no joke or comeback because, sadly Darnell McDonald is better than a few of the current RPers for the Red Sox.
"Tonight I was thinking, 'Geez, better not blow your first one,'" Robertson said. "Better not blow your first opportunity or Mo might come in here and smack me around. I think Mo would've thrown 12 pitches and broke a bat and we would have been out of here 20 minutes ago."
Interesting from Mo: Gotta love the media and all the 2012 would have been his last, etc....its the same with Innings limit with Strasburg, neither Mo said anything, nor Strasburg or really Nats FO in this case, and yet, the Media (and fans) need something to talk about so they set arbritary timeframes and CLAIM to know the truth, etc. Now, Mo shoots it down in his case, and Nats FO says the 160innings limit didnt come from us, etc. I love when the Media an fans have egg on their faces. P.S. Minor issue with blood clot in calf has caused the surgery to be delayed (blood thinners, etc)....no biggie and they will perform surgery soon. Still should be healed by Nov/Dec window, then focus on getting in shape for ST, for return in 2013.
Agree with everything you said (did you hear the big news in Boston today was Beckett went golfing last Thursday, seriously this is a big deal apparently) however the Nationals did come out and announce Strasburg has an innings limit. It came right from Mike Rizzo's mouth: Nationals GM Mike Rizzo insisted Monday that Stephen Strasburg's pitching schedule will not be manipulated this year to allow him to last later into the season. Strasburg, who missed a majority of 2011 due to Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery, will be limited to around 160-170 innings in 2012. And that's not going to change, even if the Nationals are in position to make the playoffs. "There’s not going to be a whole lot of tinkering going on," Rizzo said. "We’re going to run him out there until his innings are gone and then stop him from pitching." Strasburg will simply go every fifth game. But yes 98% of the media are fools and act like they're more important than the game itself.
I did regarding the golf...such a non-story; now I think the radio boys in beantown are out for blood with Bobby V and make him misstep...as if he needs help. Rizzo on local DC news just said some interesting stuff (and Davy Johnson alluded to it)....they emphasized the upper end of the 170 innings, and then said something to the effect of "when the 170's are reached could vary based on a number of things...." interesting approach....skipping something here or there, sitting him down after 6 with large lead, etc...who knows. I know they dont look at this season as the end all be all....but will be fun to watch what is done and when the 170 comes on the calendar, etc.
I don't understand why they have to say those things public anyway. If you want to limit his workload, fine I get it but why make states in the public like that? Just don't say anything or if asked just say "we have discussed these things internally and if and when we feel we should shut Strasburg down we will let you all know".
I think its just to stick it to the media sometimes...childish hints and innuendo, saying things without saying things; payback, etc.....the less they say the better for all parties for sure. Even what they said was alluded to, not specifically spelled out.
Dang, now Mo is going to have to smack him around.....! has to learn from it after tonight....tough loss.
