Could QB really not be this year's plan?

And why not? Why can't the plan be to gather play-making talent on defense and WR/TE, of which the draft is loaded, and leave QB for next year? Would this be such a bad thing?

Apart from the top 2 QB, the rest are not convincing prospects, Tannehill being the most likely to be something, but also, the most likely to be a bust.
The Dolphins need to break their track record of shunning first round quarterbacks, this is something almost everyone agrees with. However, why does it have to be this year? Why does it have to be Tannehill? Does the need to do something, outweigh the need to do something smart? Is picking a first round QB, more imperative than picking the right first round QB? Are we to break our disturbing pattern of free agent and 2nd round fail QB, only to fall into a new disturbing pattern of 1st round fail QB?

Really, at this point the Dolphins are almost certain to have a sorry attendance this season, and almost nothing can fix this. So why not plan for 2 years?

Really? Still with the wait till next year plan around here? This was the same thing we heard last year. Next year's class will be better! Bull****.

I've got news for you. You start with QB, you don't finish with QB. Falcons were in the same boat as us in 2008. Only they made a real investment in the QB position while we built the "trenches" The mother ****ing trenches that no longer exist except for Jake Long. Matt Ryan has made how many trips to the playoffs now?

Sorry for the anger, and I don't mean to direct it all at you, I'm just fed up with the excuses for this franchise not addressing the most important position on the field.

Yeah i understand. However that same feeling can make the Dolphins choose someone that they really should not have chosen to begin with. That is exactly what i'm saying. The imperative need the fanbase and franchise have to chose a 1st round QB no matter what, that could drive us to commit a mistake, and drive us to begin yet another disturbing pattern when it comes to QB.

The idea is not to choose a 1st round QB and hope he pans out. The idea is choose THE first round QB and stop worrying about QB all together. Dolphins don't need to chose a 1st QB this year just for the sake of choosing a 1st round QB. That would be the wrong thing to do.

If there isn't a worthy QB to add it would be stupid to add one just for the sake of it. That is my personal opinion on the subject. If you like Tannehill/Weeden/Osweiler/ANYONE you take them, but if you don't see them as a starter why would you waste your time.

It's always nice to have the horse before the wagon, but sometimes you end up with a wagon first. Doesn't mean you can't have a nice one.

I see it more like not going home with a less attractive girl i just met at the bar, because i think an hour later, i can go home with a more attractive one.

There's a chance that i won't get that girl later, but it's a chance i am willing to take.

Avoiding a quarterback could be the absolute correct decision. It's not going to sell tickets, or win you games, but if you don't like the quarterbacks available to you, odds are you're right and you shouldn't take one just because.

Wow there are some awful metaphors in this thread.

Nah, waiting to draft a QB next year is like punching yourself in the dick. If they draft a QB they don't necessarily like then that would be like taking home an ugly chick.

Problem is, drafting a QB you don't like and him not panning out, commits you for at least 2-3 years. So that would be like settling for the ugly chick, and having to live with her for the next 3 years.

So say we pass on quarterbacks this year because we can't get one of the blue chippers and everything else is a gamble. Who's to say we finish with a bad enough record to get Barkley, Landry or anyone else that is considered to be a blue chipper next year, then what? Don't take anyone again and wait to the next year or the next or the next?
I know someone will say we will just have to trade up to get one, but I say if we finish in the middle of the league it will cost us as much or more than Washington gave up for RGIII for us to move up.

Posted something similar in another thread. I can see Ireland selling Ross and Co. on impact players, such as OL and DL and waiting til next year on QB. Outside of Tannehill and Weeden, I don't see a QB that will be franchise or even good. Next year you're looking at Barkley, Jones (who should be improved with another year), Tyler Wilson and possibly Jordan Rodgers. I'd like to see Miami just take the chance and grab a 1st round QB, but Ireland needs to save his job and Tannehill isn't going to do that. He's got a better chance of sticking around by drafting Coples, Reiff or DeCastro (if he falls). Not saying I agree with that strategy, but it wouldn't shock me if that's how it went down on Thursday. I'm all set with Osweiler, Wilson, Foles, Moore and Cousins. Those are wasted picks.

No one is going to take a QB if they don't think hes the guy. You take Tannehill or do what u gotta to get Weeden, etc. if Ireland/Philbin/Sherman believes he can be the Franchise guy. And who are we to say the other prospects aren't going to be franchise guys? We don't know, were not working hours on end to find that out. Let's all relax and just wait til Thursday and see what the guys who make a living studying this stuff end up doing. Jeez can the draft just get here already enough of these threads.

And how many playoff games has Atlanta won? Same amount as Miami. This is the problem...folks are ready to draft Ryan Leaf around here JUST for the sake of drafting a QB.

Like I really want to throw a QB behind no WR's and an OL that gave up 52 sacks and questions at RB (like can Bush stay healthy again and can Thomas pick it up?). Fix these problems while the draft is deep in them this year and then be bold next year and pull the trigger on a trade up for someone with a better college track record/pedigree.

The only reason Ryan is even considered a top 20 pick is because Barkley stayed put.

Here's the thing. Any prospect in any year is going to be overanalyzed and flaws will be found in his game.
Any QB other than Luck can be considered a reach. But at some point we need to draft a QB and now is the best time to do it.

The Heat, Marlins and Panthers are accomplishing more than the Dolphins, so how do we get back to relevance? By getting a QB. NOW.

You've got to get in the tournament first. At least Atlanta is doing that and I imagine they'll break through at some point, maybe this year.

The fact is, we are not all that close to being a playoff team. Sure, with some flukes it could happen, but we are not a team that can consistently get there without a QB.

I guarantee that I can come up with some justification to not draft a QB in the first round every year. I can find some flaw in the prospects every year. And following that strategy, the odds are that the Dolphins will end up not being very good every year.

I'm sure that the FO and the coaching staff have a QB they like and will draft. If that QB matches the QB everyone wants is the real question here.

But I have no doubt that they want to bring in a rookie QB for the offensive staff to develop.

  27. Larryfinfan

Wouldn't shock me in the least, but the fanbase probably won't stand for it...too many fans want a QB, even if the QB they can select may or may not be the next coming and may need a year or two to develop. Not arguing for or against Tanny, just that Ross has mandated that we'll get a QB this offseason...Not too many can picture Weeden, Wilson or Osweiller as that guy...that pretty much leaves Tanny...who may be available to us (unless Cleveland is doing some major smoke-screening). Can Ross and Irish stand the fanbase backlash if they pass on him ??

  28. Larryfinfan

    Larryfinfan 17-0...Priceless Club Member

I think, at least as far as this year goes, there are enough flaws in Tanny's game to suggest he may not be the answer. However, he is likely the ONLY option for at least some kind of an answer at QB for us this year. It's about the risk factor. We all know that Ireland is adverse to risk, given his upbringing by Quitcells. Will he break from the mold ?? We'll know in a couple of days...

  29. Larryfinfan

    Larryfinfan 17-0...Priceless Club Member

Now we've been all thru that...Ryan is in the top 20 because he's the third best QB in this draft. You have to base his rankings on what's available. QB is a premium position...Is Tanny the real deal, that is a question...but his ranking in this draft has to do with this draft...not what could or could not be this year or any other year...

I'm sure that regardless of whom they pick, it won't match what everybody here wants. Simply b/c not everybody here wants the same QB. Statistically though, if they pass on one of the first round QBs again, they are likely to fail again in the search for a franchise QB. That is simply where most of them are found nowadays. The only ones who don't rise up the draft boards (fan and media boards, team boards really don't change much) are the ones that are long shots to ever be franchise QBs. If you keep picking from the long shot pool then, by definition, the odds are against you.

Correct. But the odds are also in your favor if you do a better job evaluating and developing the QB position. Honestly I think Wilson would be the best fit. I would probably take him in the 2nd round. Obviously the odds are against a 2nd round QB, but I think he would have just as good a chance at success as Tennhill or Weeden. JMO.

No, there are fewer flaws in Tannehill's game than there were in Locker, Gabbert and Ponder last year. Tannehill's flaws just seem bigger b/c he's in this draft and they're not. People tend to be prisoners of the moment. Last year at this time, most of this board had Locker as 2nd - 4th round talent and Ponder as a 2nd - 3rd round talent. Gabbert was considered a first rounder, but people questioned how well he handled pass rush pressure.

I expect that next year Barkley will be out of range of trading up for and that Landry Jones and Wilson will be seen as flawed. (IMO Jones is not a first round prospect anyways).

It always comes down to the evaluation. I tend to be conservative in the QBs I label "first rounders". I looked back at the guys I placed in that category over the years and approximately 80% of them became what I expected them to become. So I don't agree with the 50/50 thinking on first round QBs. But even if you're a poor evaluator 50/50 is better than the long shots in the later rounds. That being said there are later round QBs that I have liked and that have succeeded. I won't count guys like Brees as a later round guy since I had a first round grade on him, but for example I liked Yates last year. And I really like Wilson this year. He would be the only QB that would make me not join the fire Ireland bandwagon if he passes on Tannehill and Weeden.

Unless Sherman is convinced Tannehill can be the franchise QB some individuals on here seem to think he will be. I could very easily see Dolphins not drafting a QB in this years draft. With Moore and Garrard as the Dolphins #1 and 2 QB's, it is very likely that the Dolphins will not feel they need to draft a QB to come in and be the third string QB unless they feel this QB will eventually be their long term solution at this position.

If they are not convinced Tannehill is this QB, I don't see Weeden still being on the board when they draft in the second round. It is likely that they will not be confident that any of the other QB's left on the draft board will be the long term answer either and they will just decide to draft for other positions of need this year and put off looking for their franchise QB until the 2013 draft.

The Dolphins went 6-3 with Matt Moore as the teams starting QB in 2011 and Ireland just might feel that he is better than all the QB's in the 2012 draft except for Luck and RG3. If this is Ireland's thinking, I can certainly see a situation where the Dolphins do not opt to take a QB in the 2012 draft.

It's not about who will be the best QB in 2012. It's about who they can develop into a franchise QB. Philbin was brought in to develop a QB. If we don't draft the QB for him to develop, it will be another wasted year.

What if Philbin doesn't believe that any of the QB's after Luck and RG3 can be developed into a franchise QB? Why should he waste a draft pick on a QB just to satisfy fans,if he isn't really that high on any of the QB's left on the board? I am not saying that the Dolphins won't draft a QB, but I can certainly see a scenario where they don't take Tannehill in the first round and Tannehill and Weeden are off the board when the Dolphins select in round two.

If they aren't convinced that Cousins, Wilson, or any of the remaining QB's on the board at that time would ever develop into a starting QB in the NFL. they would be dumb to waste a pick on one of these QB's.

Perhaps they are extremely high on Tannehill or one of the other QB's in this draft but I was merely responding to this threads topic and as such, I can certainly envision a scenario where the Dolphins don't draft a QB in the 2012 draft.

Ultimately the scenario comes down to this.......

We draft Tannehill at #8 and he sits on the bench all season (maybe gets some garbage or injury time).
Next year we have a top 3 pick and Barkley (or another top prospect that emerges) is on the board. Do we draft a QB again after we already spent a top pick on a QB?
