Landry Jones and Matt Barkley had declared...Luck is still #1 but the battle between Barkley and RG3 would've been an interesting debate.

Me? I'm Matt Barkley all day long but the 4.3 40 would've changed a lot of minds I'm sure. Hell Landry Jones couldve made a push to #2.

My guess is it would've went like this...

    Colts- Luck
    Browns- RG3
    Skins- Matt Barkley
    Phins- Landry Jones
    Bills Tannehill.

No matter the order I would've been just fine with any of those at 8. Talk about a helluva QB class, I'm not sure Miami doesn't trade up to #2 for Barkley...would've been interesting.

Landry Jones sucks, he really had a rough year last year. He has a lot to work on. It was a smart decision for him to go back to school.

If Barkley came out I really think he would be picked before RG3, depending on team fit. If they both came out it probably would have been:

    1.) Colts - Andrew Luck
    2.)
    3.)
    4.) Browns - Matt Barkley
    5.)
    6.) Redskins - RG3 (they wouldn't have traded up)
    7.)
    8.) Dolphins - Tannehill

I'd probably take Weeden over Landry Jones too.

And my guess is Miami would have done everything in their power to trade up in front of the Browns. Rumors stated that Ireland had Barkley rated higher than Andrew Luck, and honestly I could see that.

If you grade the physical play on the field?? You could argue Matt Barkley looked better than Andrew Luck.

    As far as Jones?

Jake Locker had a HORRIBLE year and went #8 overall, so I'm not so sure Jones wouldn't have went ahead of Tannehill.

Locker was on a bad team, and a lot of his problems seemed to be him forcing things and trying to make big plays because he was trying to win on a crappy team. Overall, Locker has a very unique skill set though.

Jones on the other hand played on a superior team and still had a ton a problems, staring down WRs etc. Once Broyles went down Jones' game went to Hell. In Jones' last 4 games he threw 6 INTs and only 1 TD. His footwork wasn't great. I stopped watching him when he decided to go back to school, but I assure you his game had a lot of holes in it. He made the right decision.

Tannehill would have been taken above Landry Jones. I think Tannehill would be taken over Locker too...

Matt Barkley will be a helluva QB for some lucky team.

I struggle to find many flaws in his game, how is his work ethic and character are questions I can't answer....but the kid can throw a football and throw it well.

Maybe we use this draft to make a few trade downs and pick up some Ammo for next year to get this guy.

One thing that is common with SC players that probably will have many simply ignore it but it's worrisome is that they lack toughness. A lot of their guys are lacking mental toughness. Not saying Barkley does, but it wouldn't surprise me if he did.

Let me just say this regarding Matt Barkley and his status for next year. Unless the Colts really have an awful year in Andrew Luck's first campaign (which is possible) or there's another Peyton type injury to a top guy, I'm guessing the team that is picking first in next year's draft will have a HUGE need at the QB position. The worst teams in today's NFL tend to have this problem. This is what we have to hope for if Miami is going to have any chance at trading up for Barkley, providing they are not the worst team. I guess I should add, that's if we still need a QB next season. I'm guessing we might.

This is a valid point when looking back the past 10 years.

    Palmer
    Cassel
    Leinart
    Sanchez

Carson was the most physically gifted but after the injury against Pitt in the playoffs he hasn't looked comfortable.

Cassel played well in a good system but has been average in KC. Not sure if this is "mental" or he is flat out an overachiever.

Leinart lacked arm strength and had the party animal image, I think he had been humbled to this point and had a chance to play well for Houston...unfortunately his chance was over as soon as it started.

Sanchez is the best example of Alens comment, and the fact he plays in NY doesn't help. I see a QB who might be ok if he would just relax out there. He plays scared and IMO only a change of scenery will save his career.

Barkley is as gifted as Palmer was coming out but these kids have all likely been celebrities since early in high school and really what adversity have they REALLY ever endured being popular, good looking athletes treated like kings in college. (Cassel being the exception in that regard).

May sound odd but I think a Southern California kid may feel at home in south beach. Hopefully next year we find out.

It's still possible that someone would've traded into the #2 spot to secure the QB they were in love with rather than simply take who drops to them.

IMO, it's likely the following would've happened:

    1. Luck
    2. Wash - Griffin. If they fell in love with him enough to give up as much as they did, then having Barkley present probably wouldn't have affected their man crush; therefore, Wash still trades up to #2 to secure RG3; however, Wash might not have had to sacrifice as much b/c supply and demand would've better benefited them.
    3. Browns - Barkley. Cleveland gives up their second 1st rounder to secure the rights to Barkley. Minne is happy to oblige b/c they can still land Kalil. There's no way Cleveland can be this close to a franchise QB and passively let Miami leapfrog them.
    4. Vikings - Matt Kalil.
    5. Bucs - Claiborne or Richardson. (leaning toward Claiborne due to seeing more snaps)
    6. Rams - Richardson or Blackmon
    7. Jags - Coples, Blackmon, or Floyd
    8. Dolphins - Tannehill.
    11. Chiefs - Landry Jones. IMO Tannehill has a more desired skill set than Jones for what Philbin looks for to operate his offense.

IMHO, we'd still be in the same position with Tannehill likely staring us in the face b/c we wouldn't jump to #2 for RG3 or Barkley, and we wouldn't have the firepower or desired landing destination to swap with Minne.

I would agree that usually the team with the number one overall pick needs a QB, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Colts are the worst team in the NFL again next year even with Luck. I look at that team after they cleaned house this offseason and I don't see them putting up a much better record in 2012. With that said our biggest worry may be Cleveland sucking it up and getting the number 1 overall pick next year.

If the Colts end up with it there is a realistic chance that they would trade out. If the Dolphins are not sold on Tannenhill, which I am not convinced with, then they should trade down and try to get an additional first rounder next year. This at the very least give them the possibility to trade up for Barkley if they want to.

Personally, I would like to see them trade down and still add an impact player on the defensive side of the ball (a legit passrusher opposite Wake or a playmaker in the secondary) while still adding an additional 1st rounder next year.

Buffalo didn't pay all that money to Mario to be set back by drafting a QB who will have to go through a couple of years of adjusting while taking some lumps in the process.
Plus I really don't see Buffalo taking Weeden after how Fitz played last year prior to cracking his ribs and the entire offense being shuffled around at almost every position (receiver, O line, running back) and with nothing at #2 TE or receiver depth.

I hope Buffalo does take Weeden because quite honestly there isnt much I like about his game. I think hes a system QB all the way and I dont like the way he handles pressure in the pocket often forcing throws in to the middle of the field. He attempts too many throws his arm says he doesnt have the arm strength to make. His deep out passes sail on him. 26 interceptions the last two years. His upside is limited as a 29 year old rookie; hes just not going to get that much better because even though he was away from the game for 5 years hes in his prime now so what you see on film is pretty much what he will be in my opinion. His college production is severely inflated by the fact he played in a spread in a conference that plays no defense to speak of. He also stares down targets causing defenders to jump routes.

This is not a player who should be taken before the late 3rd/early 4th round.

Just because your deperate for a wife doesnt mean you should "settle". Ill be fine using our 1st 4 picks on good solid prospects.

Who else has Oklahoma State produced at QB that had solid numbers? He also had two Offensive Coordinators there during his time so that also goes against his "system" label.

Also he has a damn fine arm that can make all the throws. Are you sure you are talking about the same Weeden? lol

His age does matter, best case scenario he comes in and has an Andy Dalton type season....great! Except that he will be 30 years old the next season....wow, 5-6 good years.

Not trying to be a prick and im not super Anti Weeden but I feel like he lacks the arm strength and mobility and the room to grow. The upside isnt all that UP IMO.

I guess my take is if he is there in the 2nd and we take him then so be it, but at 8 is a huge JOKE, and trading up means giving up multiple picks for him....i don't like that one bit.

I think Weeden's realistic time frame is 7-8 years. I see the mobility questions as more stylistic preference than reflective of his actual play on the field. He clearly did a great job of anticipating and handling pressure. I don't think he has great arm strength, but it is very good. And he is one of the most natural passers I have ever seen, reminiscent of Marino and Warner. I don't think he has the quick release those guys had, but I think he's already better at reading defenses than Marino ever was and can easily be as good as Warner was at reading defenses. That is fantastic in terms of upside.

I just dont see how anyone can say he reads defenses better than Marino?

Some people talk like Weeden is an Andrew Luck type prospect...and others talk like he is a 3rd or 4th rounder at best. Guess we will find out what NFL execs think soon enough.

Marino was poor at reading defenses. He developed the ability to make pre-snap reads, but never became adept at post-snap reads. That was why he always struggled against NE. They were one of the few teams that were using the zone blitzes at the time. They basically would change the coverage at the snap. It's the same formula that SF used in that SB. He got by b/c he was such a great passer that he completed throws to covered receivers, not b/c he made the right post-snap reads.

And Weeden is far closer to Luck than he is to a 3rd or 4th round prospect. He does a great job of anticipating what the defense will do and preparing/negating it. He also does a great job of adjusting to what the defense is doing during the course of the game. You see that in his games against top competition where he so often prevailed after struggling early.

I don't see Ireland making a risk move in round 1. DeCastro is a real possibility at 8 if we can't trade down. I'm hoping a team is high on Poe or Floyd (if he is there) and trades up to get him. Ireland is pretty transparent when it comes to drafting in round 1.

I like Tannehill a lot so I will have to differ from you there. I think Tannehill has a lot of upside thats yet to be discovered and I think his stats from college are mis-leading. I read a stat in Club that he had something like an average of 6 passes a game dropped or about 10% over the course of the year or some such ridiculous number. Tannehill a completely different type of QB from Weeden.

Well Mike Gundy has only been there but a handful of years so its pretty much been Weeden and Zac Robinson. People also forget that Mike Gundy ran a no huddle back in his playing days as an OSU QB back when they had Barry Sanders and Thurman Thomas in the late 80's/early 90's. Hes always been a pass first, spread them out and let the wr's make plays in space type of guy. I do think Weeden is better then Robinson even though Robinson was one of the more beloved players in OSU history as far as QB's go. The system has remained spread, as I dont think Gundy would have it any other way, but more importantly Weeden had a hand in picking the OC which he wont have a hand in doing as a pro. System label remains.

Ill preface statements about Weeden's arm by saying arm strength is not the end all be all for me as it is for some. But his ball does sail on deep outs. He does force throws under pressure that he doesnt have the arm strength to make. Additionally, I think his accuracy looks better then it is at times because he has some very good receivers. I didnt mention that the first time because I think a QB needs good wr's to be successful but I think it could be a factor in a place like Miami where we dont have great wr's now even if they are average by NFL standards.

As much as I am not a Weeden fan, if we take a freakin Guard at 8 Ireland should be immediately fired. Like before the next pick. I dont care if Decastro ends up as a HOF guard, guards alone do not win you football games. Start at QB and pass rushers. If you dont have that, you dont have much.

BPA and safest pick at 8 would be DeCastro. I can't see Ireland taking any other player. Tannehill isn't worth taking at 8. He is a developmental guy not sure I would take a guy that needs some years until we get anything out of him. Good chance we trade down with someone with guys like Floyd, Cox, and Ingram on the board. Judging how bad we are at finding talent on the OL late in the draft I'm not against getting a guy that will contribute day 1 and probably be a really really good player. Building up the oline can't go wrong with that improves the whole offense.

Thats outdated thinking. Tannehill is a higher rated prospect than the QBs that went at 8,10 and 12 last year. And by all accounts Locker and Gabbert were more raw and needed more time before being ready to contribute. The rookie salary cap has eliminated much of the risk of taking a QB early and letting him develop. It's pretty much got to the point that you either take a potential franchise QB early or you don't get one. The odds of landing a Brady are that low. And if you don't have a franchise QB then you have almost no chance of winning it all.

Zac Robinson I believe, the guy Weeden had to sit and for to graduate before starting.

The system was continued from Holgersen to Monkman, although obviously Monkman did change it a bit, adding more to it in layman's terms.

The big question is how much value does Ireland put on having started at the position? Will Tannehill's experience or lack there of at the QB position in college prevent Ireland from drafting him.?

I'm not convinced on Tannehill as a first; I have a second round grade at best on him personally. As for Weeden, I'm not convinced on him in the first two rounds. Osweiler is a 5 for me. Wilson a 3. Coleman a 4-5. Lindley a 5. Foles a 4-5.
