It's likely not one polar opposite of we wanted him or we didn't want him.

We wanted him for our price based on Philbin's evaluation.

Who was it that initially opened his checkbook to bring Marshall aboard hoping he'd be one of the answers we were looking for? (so why are people assuming Ross didn't have a valid reason to trade him)

patron at Don Shula's Steakhouse: "I'll take the $48 filet mignon medium rare please."

{45 minutes later you see the waiter bring the steak back to the kitchen.} Hmph. Did the diner suddenly develop an aversion to steak?.... or is it more likely it didn't turn out the way he ordered it?

As the cost increases are we more demanding about the outcome/result? Would the diner be less inclined to send back an over cooked steak if it costs $14 instead?

    this.
if the dolphins released or traded marshall and then go out and grab reggie wayne or another good FA wide receiver this story would have become a non issue, then it would be marshall is a pain in the *** so they got what they could and replaced him with another good receiver, instead you trade him and now what?

You're free of his $10 million a year contract, possible suspension (s), future implosions, and temper tantrums.

The downside is your current WRs before the draft are Bess and Hartline.

There wasn't a perfect move to make.

Sure there was, and there still are some moves that could be made, however the other problem is we are in Cap Hell, allegedly, for some dead contracts, meaning the other side of the coin tells us we have to draft Wr's.

Sect was right about that, though the same thing was said last yr, and we wound up with 9 million heading into this yr.

This is the perfect example of what I've been saying all week.

Adam has blasted the FO on speculation and conjecture. Argued with people like me who only ask for evidence before making such a harsh decision. But that was too crazy for Adam.

Now, we have the owner of the team flat out saying Flynn wasn't good enough to offer starter money, and he calls it a lie. Adam believes the reactionary bs from the media, but not the line of thinking straight from the horse's mouth.

That is skewing reality. That is the CLB.

I appreciate the effort by Ross.

Most importantly, and I'm not sure if anyone mentioned it yet, but it's a great thing that he spoke to Peyton Manning and learned why he didn't want to come here. It's a good move in any industry to try and find out what you did wrong when you get turned down. I've done it after job interviews when I didn't get the job. I've heard an awful lot of respected NFL folks say, "Ross has a lot of learning to do about being an NFL owner."

Well, at least he's trying to learn and that's a start.

I noticed the article didn't mention Ross saying to much to defend Ireland... :shifty:

How can you possibly be spewing this same head in the sand mantra? You ask for facts yet offer none. And there are facts all around that you simply refuse to see. From the owners mouth, Peyton was afraid to play for us. He is gonna sling the rock for John friggin fox up in that freezing mountain instead. This is all about our front office, and our freakin owner just confirmed it regarding our biggest strike out to date.

Nothing to see here right? This is all about our putrid 6-10 team, versus that 8-8 AFC West championship power house right? Talent wise, there is hardly a difference between us, and if we would have signed Reggie Wayne to that lousy deal the colts gave him, you could have argued that we are better, younger, and with more upside. How bad do you have to be to go 8-8 in the AFC west anyway???

    So where are we at?

FACT: Flynn & Smith were not considered to be upgrades over Moore. They were both offered low contracts that are indicative of that. It is clear this was thought by the FO & Coaching Staff.
PROOF: Ross, The Owner of the Team for both. Alex Smith himself as well.

FACT: They couldn't get a better deal for Marshall. They wanted too but no one wanted him, so getting some better deal that was never actually there simply was not gonna happen.
PROOF: Ross, The Owner of the Team

Out of the 3 major things people lost their minds about, it seems 2 have been explained very rationally. Only thing remains is why Manning didn't want to come here (which going off Ross' quote to that fan, could be because Ireland sucks or we have a 6-10 team with a new HC.

These things were not explained by some Tweet from a reporter who has "inside sources". It wasn't reaction to those "reports" by other reporters or former players. It was from the owner himself. An actual participant in the events.

Now, its perfectly acceptable to question if it was smart to not think Flynn was starter material or Marshall wasn't worth the headache. But up until now, those weren't the issues. The issues were Flynn/Smith refused to sign here because of Ireland and he could have got more for Marshall. Those two have facts to prove they are not true and it was conjecture all along.

Angry irrational fans: !!!We're tired of losing! Get us a franchise QB!!!!
Mr Ross: but no 2011 free agent QB was the solution, and Matt Moore had greater success than any 1st rounder not named Newton, so we made the right decision.
Angry irrational fans: !!!We don't care!! We just want to see Miami take a chance on a 1st round QB!! BLUB BLUB BLUB!!!
Mr Ross: But we might use our 1st on one this year.
Angry irrational fans: !!!!BLUB BLUB BLUB!!! Tannehill sucks!!! You should fire yourself if you use a 1st on that QB !!! BLUB BLUB BLUB!!!
Mr Ross: but I thought you just said you didn't care who it was, that you just wanted to see us show that type of commitment?
Angry irrational fans: !!!Dan Marino's the best QB that ever lived!!! BLUB BLUB BLUB!!!
Mr Ross: Nice deflection. So if you don't like Tannehill and he's the only QB remotely worthy of our 1st round pick and it's not guaranteed a team will trade up with us, does that mean you understand that not every year it's feasible to find a 1st round QB despite wanting one, and that you might be overreacting and a bit too critical about not drafting a 1st round QB last year?
Angry irrational fans: !!BLUB BLUB!!! If we practiced sound logic & reason we wouldn't have as much to complain about!! BLUB BLUB BLUB!!
    Mr Ross: Enjoy the blackout.

Show me where he said Ireland was the reason why. :wink2:

It couldn't be because we have a new offensive minded coach and that might conflict with what Manning's looking for since he wants more control of the offense, hence his signing with Denver, a team whose head coach has no problem turning control of that offense over to Manning. No way. Couldn't be because of that.

I'm pretty sure this is about Manning going to the team with the most cap space. Sure they have a front man who is a HOF QB, a HC that has been to the show and the weakest division in the NFL, but let's not underestimate the cap space thing though.

Mr Ross: but his heart was in California, and so was his family. Miami was just leverage. Which is it?--- "embarrassing" or "I failed"?
Angry irrational fans: !!BLUB BLUB BLUB!! We're doomed this year b/c you traded Brandon Marshall!!!
Mr Ross: Nice deflection again. But I thought you wanted a great head coach who could help us win? Isn't that more valuable than a WR?
Angry irrational fans: Joe Philbin sucks because Matt Flynn solves all our problems!! I know so because I saw highlights of that one game!!!
Mr Ross: But our coach worked first hand with him and has been around a couple of the game's best in Rodgers & Favre.
Angry irrational fans: !!BLUB BLUB BLUB!! We're still doomed because you cut Yeremiah Bell!!!! BLUB BLUB BLUB!!
Mr Ross: I thought you screamed about getting a free safety since it's a passing league, hence we brought in Richard Marshall. ???
Angry irrational fans: !BLUB BLUB BLUB!! We don't care!!! It's wrong that you cut him in the middle of free agency with 7 months until the season begins because my company gives employees a 2 week notice!!!
Mr Ross: But isn't 7 months more than 2 weeks?
Angry irrational fans: Not in goldfish years!!!! BLUB BLUB BLUB!!!

If Ross is secure in Philbin calling the shots on his QB why can't you be ok with letting the process ride out too. If Philbin and Ireland feel the draft is the best answer to our WR needs versus street FA WR for a year and a greater CAP hit and little or no chance of being here long term I'd pass too! Let the man build the team into long term winners thru the draft ..... its his neck on the line!

No, I saw where I PATHETIC OWNER threw his rookie HC under the bus. Only a fool for an owner would do that. Did coach Philbin actually say he didn't want Flynn for a starter? We don't know that. Looks to me like Ross is trying to save he damaged reputation.

Just as likely coach Philbing might have said something to the effect of, "Flynn has done an excellent job learning the system, works harder than hell, and performed at the highest level when he started, but can I guarantee he will turn into a franchise QB...No, but I would like him on our team.

Do you understand that Miami actually OFFERED him a contract. It was reported that it was $5 million per year. Sounds like a GM/Owner being cheap to me. Do you really think Ireland and Ross have turned over contract negotiations to Philbin?

Funny how the "ostrich" thinks he is the owner of facts.

I have EVERY right to have MY OWN OPINION separate from yours. This is what I base my opinion on.

I START WITH THIS REASONABLE ASSUMPTION: Ireland is responsible for putting together a football that is both entertaining and WINS football games. Ireland is responsible for managing salary cap and determining $$$ amount in offering contracts. Ireland has "final say" on personnel moves. Ireland is responsible for improving the team by his moves each and every year during a rebuilding period.

FACT: 2011…Ross and Ireland fly across the country courting Harbaugh before he signs with the 49ers. A circus atmosphere ensues and the media has a field day going after Miami’s ownership/front office.

MY OPINION: The media was out-of-control. At best, Ross and company can be accused of being out of touch with the workings of the media nowadays with the internet and twitter when everyone wants to be first and sources don’t need to be identified or legitimate. Throw enough **** against the wall and some of it will stick.

FACT: Dez Bryant reports Ireland asked him, "Is your mother a prostitute?"
    FACT: Media rips Ireland
    FACT: Ireland makes public apology

MY OPINION: No big deal. I have no idea what the context was. Ireland says Dez said his dad was a pimp and his mother worked for him. True or not, don't know don't care.

FACT: Shortly after courting Harbaugh, Ross extends Sparano’s contract by one year.

MY OPINION: More or less a public and financial apology to coach Sparano and an attempt at damage control.

FACT: 2012...Dolphins court Jeff Fisher and Fisher chooses Rams reportedly after Fisher is told he will not be given final say in personnel moves.

MY OPINION: Not a big deal to me.

    FACT: 2012...Miami hires coach Philbin.

MY OPINION: I like the hire.

FACT: January 2012 Ireland makes the following quotes:

He said Matt Moore _ who has one year left on his contract _ "did a great job" even though "it took him a little while to get going." But Ireland and owner Stephen Ross have left no doubt they want to upgrade.
"It's a quarterback league," Ireland said. "We've got to do our best to make the position better. ... Tom Brady was a sixth-round pick. Tony Romo was a free agent. There are guys out there. We've just got to find them." ... Ireland
    http://www.newsorganizer.com/articl...es-dolphins-423f19de54d2b4b69da3600b24798805/
"We need a quarterback that can get us over the hump."
“finding a quarterback is obviously essential.”
“make a much bolder statement in South Florida.”
    Read more here: http://www.miamiherald.com/2012/03/20/2702822_p2/miami-dolphins-lead-league-in.html#storylink=cpy
"We've got to tweak it for sure and make some strong acquisitions to get where we need to get," Ireland continued. "There's no doubt there will be a few changes."

FACT: When Ireland makes these quotes Manning is under contract and all reports are he is NOT ABLE to throw.

MY ASSUMPTION: Ireland, being a GM, would know what QBs are available in free agency when he makes these statement. Only an IDIOT wouldn't...so, on second thought, maybe Ireland hadn't checked the FA list.

FACT: It is reported Ross/Ireland are "all in" in their pursuit of Peyton Manning. It is estimated Peyton will require a contract in the neighborhood of 5 years $90 million.

FACT: Miami is reported to be approximately $15 million under the cap and would have to gut the team and/or renegotiate contracts to sign Manning.

MY OPINION: Manning is a great QB, but given age, health, and likelihood of putting Miami in salary cap hell I believe Manning is not the best option.

FACT: Reported Manning will meet with coaches but not Ross or Ireland.
FACT: Manning sends letter to Ross (as reported by Ross) he is not interested in Miami.

FACT: Miami turns attention to Matt Flynn who visits following visiting Seattle.
FACT: Reported Miami has offered Flynn a contract.
FACT: Jason Cole reports Miami is low-balling Flynn.
FACT: Flynn signs 3 year $26 million deal with Seahawks which is a “fair” contract by today’s standards for a starting QB in the NFL
FACT: Flynn hints at Miami’s dysfunction in interviews why he chose Seahawks:
When asked why he chose Seattle over Miami, Flynn responded-
“I am close with Joe, I think a lot of him. I think he’s gonna do a great job in Miami. I think he’s gonna be a really successful head coach in the league. So when it came down to it, I just felt like it was a better situation for me — I felt it’s a program that’s really on the rise, doing the right thing, is being led by the right type of people. And you look at it, I think it’s the second youngest team in the NFL, and so there’s a lot of talent everywhere and I think it’s a team that in the very near future has a chance to be special.”
You can listen to the entire Matt Flynn interview here.
Flynn’s words, ” (Seattle) …..it’s a program on the rise, doing the right thing, is being led by the right type of people”, speaks volumes to what is going on in Miami right now. I live in the Miami Dolphins television market and I grew up watching Miami when they were one of the top franchises in the NFL. Something is going to have to change with either the front office or the ownership in order to make this organization relevant again.
    http://www.thepigskinreport.com/201...qb-matt-flynn-hints-at-miami-dolphins-issues/

MY OPINION: Flynn was by far Miami’s best option this off season. Made total sense. Best game as a college player was in National Championship game throwing 4 TD passes. Started two games in NFL and had best two game start in NFL history…9 TD passes, 731 yards, 72 points against two excellent teams.
I agree with Aaron Rodgers: Aaron Rodgers twitter on Matt Flynn:"The team that gets Matt is going to be very happy, I can promise you. They'll be getting a top-15 quarterback."

FACT: Miami turns attention to Alex Smith of 49ers who turned down 3 year $24 million contract and 49ers were flirting with Manning. Smith in for visit, but no signing. Smith signs with 49ers after Manning signs with Broncos.

MY OPINON: Thought Smith would have been a lesser option than Flynn. Why would Miami waste their time if they weren’t going to offer him anywhere near the $8 million SF offered him as Ross has indicated they weren’t going to.

FACT: Maimi brings in David Garrard and signs him to a $3 million plus contract to compete with Matt Moore.
FACT: David Garrard is 34, missed last year after having back surgery, and only other offer reported was to be a backup for the Rams.
FACT: Ireland says he is happy with the QB situation in Miami…WTF?
"Where we are at this juncture, I'm happy where we are at the quarterback position,"

We now have 2 QBs that are probably backups at best under “one year” contracts and Miami will probably spend a top draft pick reaching for a QB in the draft when we have plenty of holes to fill. And Ireland says he is "...happy where we are at the quarterback position." Are you happy with it Finascious D?

FACT: Miami’s FO takes an absolute beating from player, ex-players, the media and fans and is now generally considered to be the worst FO in all of football, if not all of sports.

FACT: Ross calls up a disgruntled fan and has a 27 minute chat.

MY OPINION: Ross engages in a desperate PR move. Ross doesn’t take any ownership at all. Ross throws Marshall under the bus, Flynn under the bus and coach Philbin under the bus in his conversation with the fan. Ross looks more like a clown than before. Ross could have and should have said something to the effect, “I know I said upgrading the QB position was our top priority and we would be bold in doing so. However, we thought it wise not to sign any of the available options this off season. We think they are all fine QBs, but we felt it was too big of a risk. We also want to wish Marshall success and thank him for his contributions as a Miami Dolphin…etc..”

JC Ross! You are a billionaire, hire a communication/PR coach.

So there you go Finascious D. Those are some of the facts in which I base my opinion. There is more dysfunction that has played out, but this might be the longest post ever already.

No disrespect, but I am not looking for your approval of my opinion. I am well educated and graduated with a 3.9 gpa in post-graduate school. I know what deductive reasoning and inductive reasoning are. I am very capable of making my mind up based on my own interpretation of the facts. I am capable and competent in coming to my won conclusions. I don't really care if you agree with my interpretation of the facts. You are entitled to take the ostrich approach and your wrong opinions... But for you to say my opinions aren't based on facts is bull****...THEY ARE!

So back to my original assumptions of this post I think it is fair to say...
OPINION: Ireland has not built a team that is entertaining or wins many games.
OPINION: Ireland has done a piss-poor job managing the salary cap. We offer a nickel CB over $5 million a year, but not a potential starting QB in today's NFL. Both QBs have one year contracts. Our best player on offense (Long) and defense (Wake) have not had their contract extended which means they will likely cost a lot more to negotiate with if they are UFAs. This is not a team of stars and we almost maxed out.
OPINION: Miami has gotten worse this off season, not better and I don't have great hope that Ireland is a master of working the draft.

I really don't have a problem with releasing a WR who dropped more TD's in the past two years than he caught, and we may not "replace" him if the receivers we already have can make up the difference. Ross owns the team, Philbin is the coach of that team, it's only natural that Philbin is "his coach"...

  38. So our new HC is incapable of controlling BM enough to get production out of him that the team feels its in thier best interests to sell him off to the only suitor he has.... Am I the only one concernced about what this says about our new HC? Did we hire another Cam Cameron who cant control his locker room? I sincerely hope I am wrong but this asrticle reads to me as damage control for Philibin. Please thank this post if ou agree that this article makes philbin look weak because I'ld really like to know if I'm alone in feeling this way.

Adam... you did fine until you forgot one little item. The quote from Ireland you used - you did not fully quote, after reaming someone for not doing so to support this long melodramatic post.

"At this juncture" - What is it? Ten days or so into FA - it feels more like ten years from the nonsense on the boards. We have until August to find spots which need filling and right now, before the draft, before the post draft trading season, and before camp starts - he is happy where we are right now.

The Dolphins did not invest $96,000,000.00 in a 36 year old quarterback with nerve damage in his neck.

The Dolphins did not invest "fair" starting quarterback money in a four year player who has two NFL games in his resume. As far as what he is purported to say in Seattle, that is probably for local (there) consumption to show that his new employer was smart enough to pay him more money. The rest sounds like he reads the boards and knows how fickle Miami fans have been for the past 45 or so years. (They had trouble filling both the Orange Bowl and Joe Robbie when they were winning!) The local uproar is only exceeded by the local media bovine scatology.

The Dolphins did not go over board on Alex Smith because it was relatively obvious he was playing us against San Francisco as insurance in case Manning did sign there, and for a possible better offer if he did not.

So, since you think that Ireland is a
, why not take your 3.9 GPA Post Grad degree and your knowledge of inductive and deductive reasoning and wrap it up in a resume, send it to the Fool of an Owner, and apply for Ireland's job. I am sure that would take all the sting out of frustration of fandom for you, and probably markedly improve the team at the some point in time, from your educated perspective.

I just want to see what plays out between here and the start of the season. Then I will make my scientific wild @$$ guess how the team has turned out somewhat later than 10 days into free agency.

    TTFN..

Oh, if anything proves offensive. I apologize. I have been awake for basically the last 20 hours dealing with some things in the parish, and could not get to sleep. I tend to get a bit cranky once in a while.
