Payton suspended a year, Loomis suspended 8 games and fined 500k, Saints fined 500k, and lose 2nd round pick in 2012 and 2013.

I guess Carmichael gets a year long job interview, unless they want to give Spags the reigns

Ouch. Kinda glad Fischer didn't choose Miami now. No doubt Wlliams would have been brought in as D coordinator.

I think that was the intended reaction of the NFL. The operative word here is deterrent. As in other the other teams will now have a deterrent from practicing the same type of stupid behavior.

This type of reprecussions are pretty much unprecidented, at least in the NFL. New Orleans essentially just got Roger Goodell's version of the Death Penalty.

Not that I disagree with what was handed down, but wow.

No doubt this will be viewed as a game changer, as in how teams 'used' to do things and how they do things 'now.'

Per Glazer: Saints first option for interim HC, Joe Vitt, also suspended.

have to wait on that, NFLPA asked nfl to wait until it could also do an investigation. But you have think a couple of em are getting hit with multiple game suspension, 4 games I'm guessing is a start.

Lashings =.5$ given to players for nocking out other players

Remaining lashings given to rest of defense, equally distributed.

Why? Its not like it was the Pats. The Pats would have got 2 extra 2nd round picks.

i think it is similar to the MLB and the way they turned a blind eye to the steroid era, they were making huge amounts of dollars, they popularized the whole chicks dig the long ball, they saw people getting bigger and bigger and did nothing.

in the NFL they sell dvds with big hits editions show huge brutal hits for money, they have commercials showing big time hits, espn had a segment called jacked up etc

now they want to cry foul when coaches and teams set up funds for big hits? and if a clean hit knocks someone out so be it. goodell says this is about keeping the integrity of the game blah blah blah and all that bull****. when the patriots hurt the integrity of the NFL far more than this did where you have players, fans and teams wondering what they are seeing on the field is legit and fair not one person suspended, it is hypocrisy of the highest order.

    Tough.

They had been doing it for years. Goodell told them to stop, they ignored him. Benson told them to stop, they ignored him.

You can not have teams rewarding players with monetary incentives that involve injuries. Essentially turning your defensive players into bounty hunters instead of football players. It is also a major salary cap violation, essentially paying players bonuses off the books. I would have hammered them for that as well.

Goodell does not take well to lies (see: Vick, Michael) and he takes player safety very seriously. The Saints' leadership basically dared him to do something about it. If the Saints coaching staff had put an end to it a year ago, came clean and cooperated with Goodell's investigation the sanctions would likely have been FAR less severe. It shows if you lie to Goodell you are screwed, if you lie about a lie you are doomed.

I congratulate Goodell for having the stones to bring the hammer down...and I am FAR from a Goodell supporter.

It's all over twitter that Payton has asked Parcells to coach the Saints this season.
