You are misunderstanding what I mean completely and reinforced my point actually. He was never able to grow from his rookie year and in fact I'd say his mental state going into the season had to be worse than that of a rookie due to all of the different things he had to go through. He was never allowed to GROW. Now he will be for the first time. Obviously he isn't actually a rookie, my point is that as far as development goes it never was allowed to happen.
No one mentioned that Alex Smith has been thru 7 OC's in his young NFL career. Maybe if he comes here, he can finally be in the same system for several years.
I watched the niners game. Alex Smith was not good. He played the game of his life against New Orleans and then followed that up with a bad game.
That's quite easy and straight forward to understand, so I'm not sure why some people have trouble comprehending it.
You make it sound as if he never retained anything from year to year. Alex Smith must be the dumbest quarterback ever for him to be in a worse mental state than a rookie, despite being in the NFL for six years. I personally do not want a quarterback who is that mentally weak or that unable to process information. Alex Smith would also have a new coordinator again so I guess he would be back to square one according to your logic.
What I don't understand is how he can claim that Smith's mental state would be WORSE than a rookie's because he was starting in a new offense despite six years of NFL experience.
You realize every single season in the NFL he had to learn a new offense correct? His team absolutely THREW HIM TO THE WOLVES his first few seasons in the NFL and they never bothered to put him in a system where he could succeed. His confidence HAD to be absolutely shaken at that point. As a rookie your confidence is not shaken yet. Hence what I said.
With that, he was pretty mediocre, too. He has exactly the same number of 3000 yard seasons Jay Fiedler had.
I do but you're acting as if none of the offenses shared anything at all with each other. The verbiage and play calls change but there are certain things that transfer from offense to offense, which you are completely dismissing. Says who? It's quite possible that he didn't succeed because of his own abilities. How do you know his confidence was shaken? And if so, how do you know it was still affecting him years down the road? I feel like you're making a lot of assumptions to excuse his poor play.
I live in the Bay Area & watch all the 49ers games. We will regret signing him. Fans will go up in arms & ask why didn't we spend that money on Flynn instead. Mark my words. Other fins fan in the Bay area will tell you the same. I wish I had a nickel for everytime I heard that over here...
I'm not saying Smith is the answer, but if you had to change systems every year, your going to stuggle. Some systems take two full years to learn.
Obviously we don't agree at all. You could very well be right, but I simply don't see it that way. I see a guy with all the physical tools who was not ready to start from day one. He didn't play in a pro system in college nor did he face very good competition. However if you watch his tape you will see a player with tremendous accuracy who can place the ball exactly where it needs to be. You don't lose accuracy in the NFL. Windows become tighter but in college he was able to put throws exactly where they needed to be. The only thing that changed was the fact that when he got into the NFL the speed of the game changed, and if you watch their offense from those years you will see that they asked him to do a lot of things that were out of his comfort zone. He is not a QB who is going to complete a bunch of deep passes or stretch a defense that way. They tried to run a vertical offense with a guy who wasn't ready to start anyway and it backfired. I don't like Smith because I see him as a franchise guy. I like him because I see him as an above average guy with a potential to be great in the right system. His greatest strength is his ability to make throws on the run and use his athleticism. Philbin loves to run bootleg passes which matches up with the best asset of Smith. Alex has the ability to be extremely accurate in the short game, and then when the defense has been drawn in that is when he is able to stretch the field. I just see a guy who fits exactly what our new head coach wants to do offensively.
I'd say so. lol When I look at Alex Smith I just don't see it. Probably best to just leave it at that.

I definitely respect your opinion. At the end of the day neither of us gets to decide, so it really doesn't matter who is right. All we can hope is that whoever we sign ends up being successful.
For what it's worth one of my best friends is a die hard Niner fan who played football collegiately so I respect his opinion. He is not a fan of Smith at all. His brother on the other hand is an eternal optimist and thinks Smith could turn into something. I tried to find some comments on a 49ers forum but I'm not sure, which is their best one because the ones I found were all terrible.
i always felt bad for alex smith, the **** he went through in san fran with all the OCs he went through and being thrown into the fire like he was. still i dont know if he is the solution here or not. i have a feeling he will not sign with miami
I'll say this, he was sensational against the Saints in the playoffs. Damn clutch too in the 4th quarter. He won that game for them. I like Smith a lot. Don't love him, but I will as long as he wins. Definitely have the right system in place for him. It sounds like a real good fit.
Alex Smith is not as bad as many think. On the other hand, Alex Smith is not as good or has not been as good as many think. He had one of the best RBs in the league and probably the best defense in the league to help him out in 2011. The NY Giants completely exposed every single weakness Smith has in the NFC Championship game. If you watched the game it was not pretty. If rumors are correct we are offering this guy about 8 million a year with the same 10 million guarantee then I will say it even louder, this FO office is completely useless and void of anything inbetween their ears. I would rather go with Moore for 2012 and find him a backup. Phillbin may have been with Green Bay but the man is not a miracle worker. Throw in Sherman with his ego and this could get really fugly if they keep screwing around. I have never liked Sherman at all and still don't.
If the alternative is Tebow, consider me on the Alex Smith bandwagon. At least Alex Smith has strengths that match the system being implemented.
