We're almost through the first ten picks. I once had a nightmare at the number nine pick last year and dreamt Ryan Mallet was taken here, and Blaine Gabbert was drafted over Cam Newton. Then I woke up and Newton went first overall and had an incredible season and Mallet is taking his time learning behind Tom Brady. Ninth Overall: Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame - Carolina Panthers From my sources this was a landing spot for either Matt Kalil or Quinton Coples but neither slipped the spots necessary. In essence the Panthers had to settle for Notre Dame product Michael Floyd and he will join the long list of impact Irish receivers in the last decade like Arnaz Battle, Maurice Stovall and Golden Tate…um…right. However Floyd is a first round pick, though you can make a case that it was a little high. He's got good speed and takes long strides and add in his size, he is a physical receiver that will be hard for corners to press. He's the perfect compliment next to Steve Smith and I doubt he becomes the next Dwayne Jarrett. Though the Panthers will keep thinking a lot about how close they were to getting Coples until the Dolphins bypassed their quarterback needs. Not sure the love affair with Poe. I should elaborate. I don't like him as a top 15 player. At 19 though would have been perfect
Well look at that, another one that I hit on the head as my genius exceeds me. Tenth Overall: Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis - St Louis Rams No one has upped his stock further than Poe showing that just because you're built like a mountain doesn't mean you can't be athletic. He showed just that with his 40 time and just how strong he was with the bench press. Fred Robbins and Ryan Pickett are older and if Poe hits the potential he has shown then the Rams have an anchor for a potentially dangerous line in the future. I don't think it's going to be a boom or bust type situation, rather it will be if Poe can hit the level of a Ted Washington or Vince Wilfork, especially with his mammoth size. Perfect sport and value. The Chiefs were able to move up, but then couldn't drop back of course they didn't need to, after all they were in perfect position to fill their biggest need. Eleventh Overall: Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama - Kansas City Chiefs A curious pick here, especially if you want to go with a best player analysis. You have to consider the value of taking a first round running back these days knowing you can get production out of backs in the later round or after the draft like Arian Foster. However there is a bit of a time warp happening here as Trent is a first round talent, but a position the Chiefs don't need to address unless they are really worried Jamaal Charles can't bounce back, but even then they could have found a plethora of options after the first round. The biggest need this offseason is nose tackle and after whiffing in free agency they had an opportunity to take the top rated defensive tackle. Michael Brockers has the size and frame to add more pounds to man the middle. He's the most complete back, and is your classic featured back but this isn't kind of fit you would expect in the draft. Perfect sport and value. Peter Kiper rating: B- Peter Kiper's Soundtrack to the draft equivalent: She Ain't Pretty - Northern Pikes "I heard a voice inside me say She ain't pretty she just looks that way We made a date to go for a drink I wore my jeans and she wore a mink There was this misconception all over town That she ate lonely guy heart by the pound She said "Take me home, there won't be no fuss"
Yea, I don't agree with the assessment on Brockers. I don't envision him as a 3-4 NT... I would have him as a DE in our system. If I were running a 4-3, he would be a DT but since I'm in a 3-4, he isn't worth this pick. At 6'6", he is in the mold of 2 other LSU guys that are on my d-line, both of which don't play at NT. Richardson in the other hand, offers a great compliment to J.Charles and plays into the strength of our offense: Running the ball. Beyond Poe, there aren't any NT prospects that are worth this pick and there aren't any other glaring needs. The only other one I considered at this point was DeCastro but the value of Richardson was too good to pass up.
I'm not hating on your pick. It may end up being a steal for you in the end, he's just not a player I found to be exceptional right now.
And I realize Peter Kiper isn't a GM, but don't we usually avoid mentioning the exact name of players who are still available?
I've done it for Kiper for a while now, but then again now that I have sigs on, I can see a number of names there. So I don't see any kind of difference, I think its ok to talk about other players because we all have different boards. Frankly I hear the Jets GM has three QBs on his board for his first three picks.
Tannenhill at 8 would have been ludicrous. In fact I should have been dragged out into the street and beaten had I made that pick. As for Richardson, I see the point but the NFL is becoming more and more of a passing league which made even more of a reason to draft Coples. Plus Coples also helps address my less than spectacular secondary by creating more QB pressure. With a more effective defense I can argue that will make a more successful offense. Also if you think this would piss off the Miami faithful, Kalil really would have because he was going to be my pick if Tractor Traylor had not traded up. Luckily, for you I like Third Eye Blind. Hey just because I asked if your mother was a whore in prior trade discussions is no reason to slander me. Miami fans will love my draft. Just win baby. Does Matt Hasselbeck come with a first round pick? If not...yeah, no.
I never heard of the Titans GM, until I called my scout in Oceania and found out he abandoned his job for the Titans. Much like the Jets/Patriots - Belichick issue I should be compensated a draft pick. One of your two firsts will do.
I can't wait to draft Andrew Luck in our other GM league... it's going to be the best moment ever, right up there with the birth of my children.
I can't speak for #17 & #18... but the committee will be selecting for both Detroit and Atlanta. Detroit hasn't checked in at all (I sent him two PMs) so it's obvious they will be two draft picks then done. Sean has had no internet since moving into his new house apparently so the committee will make picks for him until he returns. I won't forfeit his picks because I know the circumstances.
Well... I dunno if those picks were the greatest of picks but schisno and I felt that because Detroit lost Backus this year... they would definitely need a new OT. Martin seemed to provide excellent value as well. Judging by Atlanta's roster, he is running a 3-4. He desperately needs another 3-4 DE... Sis starting front seven looks like Cory Peters & Michael Brockers at DE, Domata Peko at NT, Antwan Barnes & Mathias Kiwanuka at OLB, and DJ Williams & Curtis Lofton at ILB. We pegged a few other needs for his roster but Mach, schisno, and I felt Brockers provided excellent value while fulfilling a need.
How long do I have to make my pick? I'm pretty sure I'm trading it, but I'm waiting to hear final confirmation from the person I'm trading it to.
Oh, okay. The person I'm potentially trading with is usually around so I doubt it will take nearly that long.
Some might not agree with me that he last pick was the wrong one, but the next one makes everything all Wright. Twelvth Overall: Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor - Seattle Seahawks So far this offseason the Seahawks have done a good job of minimizing their needs, by upgrading the quarterback position and finding a great replacement for the departed Marshawn Lynch. There's really two positions of possible need here. One to upgrade Tight End and upgrade Zach Miller, and the other is to add a star receiver. Doug Baldwin showed some glimpses of being a solid number two, but what they need is someone who can be that guy and the Seahawks made sure they got him by drafting Kendall Wright. Some might thing it's a tad early here at twelve but really, did you see the contract Colston got? What they get is a guy with top end acceleration and speed, so you know he won't take long to get from 0 to 60. Smooth body movements and has good hands because he can really pick those balls out of the air like they were apples on a tree. Really good pick here, and down go the top three receivers. Sometimes you're in the right place at the right time, just like being kicked out of every other bar in town to find yourself stumbling into a bar as they announce last call and every girl in there has been drinking herself silly because the male to female ration happens to be 1 to 10. Not that the next pick is a pretty girl, but the Cardinals seem to be in the perfect spot. Thirteenth Overall: Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa - Arizona Cardinals They lost Levi Brown which could be a blessing in disguise as it forced them to nab Riley Reiff at lucky number thirteen. The big knock on him is his short arms. Make all the t-rex jokes you want but he is a solid product and if history indicates anything you can't deny a Kirk Ferentz product will be able to anchor in the NFL. It's tough to get around the edge on him because of his lateral quickness and agility, he's described as pro ready so the Cardinals won't have any problems putting him on the left or right side. Good value here and fills a major need to keep their quarterback upright. It's always nice when you don't have to move too far away for your first job, that it's nice to be wanted when you've been overlooked by teams that needed you. Fourteenth Overall: Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M - Dallas Cowboys It feels like the Cowboys have the potential, but always succumb to a Romo mistake, so this pick here could signify it's put up or shut up time for Tony Romo otherwise the Texas A&M star is ready to make himself America's quarterback, ok, ok, there's no way he'll take that apparent title from Tim Tebow. Ryan Tannehill is short on experience but he has the look and ability of a quarterback that can produce on the next level. He'll be able to share the same thought process of his receivers as he had success at that position as well. Though the Cowboys could have replaced Doug Free who looked like he was moving to the right with the emergence of Smith. Trust me when I say Free's salary was average compared to lineman in free agency. It's not a slam dunk pick here, but great value and insurance just in case Romo fumbles away his job, cause Ryan Tannehill… he's a Cowboy. Peter Kiper rating: A Peter Kiper's Soundtrack to the draft equivalent: Cowboy - Kid Rock "No kiddin', gun slingin', spurs hittin' the floor Call me 'Hoss', I'm the Boss with the sauce in the horse No remorse for the Sherrif, in his eye I ain't right I'm gonna paint his town red an' paint his wife white"
So the Lions, they let their free agents go. Didn't make any kind of splash I saw this offseason. I guess they're happy with the bodies they have under contract. Fifteenth Overall: Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford - Detroit Lions It really feels like I'm talking about the invisible man here, I haven't really seen much of anything from this team. You'd expect more of a drive from a team that finally made the playoffs again. I'd shake their hands to congratulate them on a good season, but I'm not looking for a fight. Hopefully Martin doesn't disappear in Motown like Jeff Backus.
