Another team trying to get out of their top five position, and again with no luck. Fifth Overall: Luke Kuechly, LB, Boston College - Tampa Bay Buccaneers The Bucs paid a lot of money in the receiving corp and defensive front, so we're able to rule those positions out, the most glaring need is at linebacker so this pick makes all the sense in the world as they need someone to pair with Mason Foster and the newly acquired Lance Briggs. The kid is the most complete linebacker available and you can be sure he'll be around the ball constantly. He's a kid who is a better athlete then they give him credit for, which he proved at the combine and now he'll man the middle for years to come in the lovely climate of Tampa. Yeah, I never got any interest for #4 either. If you wanted Claiborne so bad, you should have put in a phone call.
I didn't realize the pick was on the market. I guess I wasn't paying attention. I'm happy with Kuechly though.
My phone is dead. I have to go ALL the way to my car to get my charger though... decisions, decisions.
Once upon a time the Texans tried to find their Amobi Dick, but now focus on a much larger Cox. Sixth Overall: Fletcher Cox, DT, Mississipi State - Houston Texans This one is a bit of a surprise as Fletcher Cox is the first defensive tackle taken off the board. He's got good size and can play inside or outside on the front four, the best part of all is he's got room to grow and become even stronger than he already is. This move helps that transition from a 3-4 back to the 4-3 and allowing them some looks with an odd front. It's not a bad pick, but he isn't the pass rushing monster of a Coples or the actual whale that Dontari Poe is. I think there were better prospects but Fletcher has great upside. As long as he doesn't turn into the next Akoye we'll be fine here. Hopefully the new 4-3 can be as dominant as the 3-4 last year, and not the year before. For now the Texans GM is going to have to get Valerie to see this will be the same dominant defence that helped them to their first playoff appearance. Oh, I know its my pick, but with some studs still available, I got a lot of interest to move into my pick. I technically have till 5.........hmmmmmmm what shall I do??
Wow, first real surprise pick. I honestly thought he had a chance to be there at my pick at 17. Doesn't mean I don't think he's a good pick here though. He's a good player.
So sick, you picking? EDIT: Actually considering Sking is nowhere to be found, you can take your time lol.
Sometimes you have to move up and grab the best player on the board. Seventh Overall: Matt Kalil, OT, USC - Kansas City Chiefs The Chiefs make a big draft day splash and move up into the top ten and select the highly touted Matt Kalil to be their franchise tackle. This works as an upgrade for David Mims and Branden Albert. Albert is a good tackle, but not elite and will fair better inside at left guard or possible flourish on the right side. However the Chiefs had to give up Eric Berry who is a game changer at safety which leaves them looking for a replacement in a shallow safety class. True they also upgrade the quarterback position by moving onto Vick, but you have to ask yourself if he'll fair as well outside Reid's system. As for Kalil himself, he is a top 5, could be argued top 3 and to have him fall to here makes it a great value for the Chiefs for an athletic tackle with long arms and great lineage. You can't argue with value. Nice review, thanks Schis. As much as I love Berry, I felt that the trade helped out so many other areas of my team that I had to take it. We've been missing consistent QB play since Trent Green and I had the cap room to take on Vick. Plus, I still maintain my other 1st rounder at #11. Jim Leonhard also isnt a bad fallback to replace Berry, IMHO.
Leonard does have some ability, but the fact he's having trouble staying healthy could be a problem, and we'll see if he slows down this season. Thanks for keeping Kalil at 7 as Kiper predicted.
FU Miami. Pick #9 is available, but not until the deadline. I plan to move the pick or make a selection at least 30mins before my time is up.
Here's a team that has been crying out for a hero...er quarterback for close to two decades now. Too bad it doesn't happen here but they get the best lineman who should have gone several picks ago. Eighth: Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina - Miami Dolphins Once again the Dolphins ignore their biggest need, because they're ok with a backup starting for them. Maybe they believe they will be able to grab the next tier available but Tannehill continues to slide while the Fins grab the highest ranked lineman in Quinton Coples who should add more of a pash rush opposite Cameron Wake. Coples biggest knock on him is his inconsistent play, and people questioning his effort on every play but then again here's a player who racked up nearly 18 sacks in the last two years. In a division with Tom Brady you need to follow that Giants blue print and get to him with the pass rush. It feels that need perfectly, but we'll see if we get the offense that went 0-7, or 6-3 when everything started coming together. You could have argued for Trent Richardson as well if you don't believe Bush can get another season like he had under his belt. I know the Dolphins fans will be crying for someone's head if they don't get the quarterback play they haven't had since Marino, or the very least Fiedler.
