Phill simms and John Beck........pretty similar IMO. Smart, tough, and accurate is how i would describe Phil Simms, Smart, tough and accurate is how i would describe John. I really think that Bill Is drooling thinking about how he can turn this team into the blueprint of his late 80's giants.

If this is the way we're going to go then the important thing to do is get our QBs able to throw it real deep to Ted Ginn.

Also I can't believe there are still folks out there trying to say Jake Long will play RT.

Can't wait to see our new OL and Ricky/Ronnie running behind that. Next season should be a lot of fun to watch. Forget the tricky stuff, get back to the Vince Lombardi style of smashmouth football that wins championships, works for me!

such a great point, you can play smashmouth all you want, if you have 8 defenders in the box it aint gonna work.

So far at the rookie camp he was LT 100% of the time in every video I watched, including some news highlights.

Ricky could really thrive in this type of Offense and have alot more impact than he would in a system like last year. Our 1-2 would be pretty special if Ricky is anywhere close to his former self.

Jake Long at RT? That's what jumped out at me....

This offensive line, barring injury, will be a real strength. I love the make-up of the line from left to right, assuming we have someone step up to fill one of the guard spots. Good team have good offensive lines...we haven't had one for a LONG time.

I seem to recall getting excited a bit like this about Cam's offense last pre-season as well...
The biggest difference I see here though is that Ireland and Parcells are going about the changes more intelligently. They started by making the changes at the line. If the OL and DL get solidified and play consistently well, the rest of the pieces will fall into place.

I really hope this is true as we honestly haven't been anything (either a passing team or smash mouth team) for awhile.

We need an identity and the attitude to go with it.

Shades of our Don Shula led championship teams.

If you think about it the 72 and 73 teams were pretty much smashmouth .Opposing defenses knew what the next play would be but still could not stop it.It was demoralizing to opponents.

But as CK mentions you have to mix in some big passing plays like Griese to Warfield in the old days.

The passing game becomes much more effective when defensive players are bunched up close to the line of scrimmage to stop the run.

I hope Beck becomes our Griese who share similar talents,a student of the game, accurate throws, fair of foot ,intelligent etc.

    meh.

i appreciate the "smash mouth" football angle, but you need some sizzle and flash in that playbook as well. I mean if you want to be very technical, when was the last time a straight-up smashmouth football team won the SB? a lonnnnng time ago. everyone has the sizzle to go with the steak now.

i'm tired of us having ****ty redzone percentages.... and no BIG offensive plays.

It is one thing to have the media calling you a smash mouth football team.

    This is real life.

You actually have to go out and do it on the football field. :wink2:

Man, there are a lot of "IFs" to settle before TG can become as dangerous as he potentually can be. Our OL needs to gel, our running backs need to come back healthy, QB must be consistent on third downs. But gosh, I see some really good things happening if the youth movement functions as a unit early on.

I tend to agree with you but while our young qb's mature, the smash-mouth approach might be a good oen to take some pressure off them. It wont lead to very many big plays but it may lead to better QB play and development which is probably the more important angle here bro.

The point of being consistently able to smashmouth it is to suck them up into that box. That's exactly where you want them if your QB is then able to take a scalpel to them using his arm. Doesn't have to be long balls either.

it would be nice to be ahead of the curve in offense and defense changes for once- to actually be innovating(or returning) a style that matches up quite well against other teams

Cam's offense was pretty good before the injuries. At the point Green got hurt we were ranked #12 in offense in the NFL. That's despite the fact that Green was hardly spectacular, RB was sharing carries the first two weeks and our OL was not very good. Nobody noticed though b/c our D was so bad we were still losing every week.

I really think that if Beck can play smart (not spectacular) this year and RB recovers we can be very effective once our OL gels. We may see some struggles at first b/c Cam and Green did a great job of hiding our OL deficiencies through play calling but hopefully those deficiencies will soon become a strength.

That old school football was bested by Jimmy Johnsons smaller faster better conditioned teams. Then it was the greatest show on turf with the balanced high percentage attack. It all comes in circles I guess, but a smash mouth team will get picked apart by a Tom Brady, Manning, Romo, etc. Our biggest improvement will probably be time of possession. Keep it close and get into position for field goals or punching it in. We should be able to win those games that we lost last year by three points. The key now is preventing the scoring by the other team.

Smashmouth running leads the way for big plays. Run the ball 4 times and on the 5th, throw a bomb to Ginn. I have no problem grinding down the oppposing teams D for 2 quarters and then opening up on some bombs after their dead tired from attempting to stop the run.

As far as ****ty redzone percentages, Big Ernie Wilford should be a very nice target for whoever is running our O. Also, Ronnie had a real nose for the endzone last season. I think R or R shouldnt have a problem getting in, esp with our much improved OL.

BTW lets not forget that being a "smash mouth" squad also relies heavily on having a shutdown D. More specificly, we need a great pass rush to contest in this league. We all know our secondary is far from stellar and fairly thin. We need that constant pressure on the QB that makes our secondary look good.

We can run the ball all day. But IMO, we sink or swim with the play of our D. Smash mouth isnt usually a high scoring style, so we'll need to make sure our D is in top shape.

Smash-mouth? Really? I'd settle for better players. Couldn't care if they want to run a wing-T, just get some better players. Schematically, there probably won't be much difference between what Cameron wanted to run and the new offense. I appreciate less the new schema and more the better players along the offensive and defensive lines.

The Smashmouth approach is perfect too for making that the main focus when teams prepare for us. That should make life much easier for Ginn and company upfield...especially on playaction.

"Better players" have to start somewhere, and its usually not in a system that doesnt benefit them. You can have all the great players you want, but if they arent used right then its the same result as having a team full of bad players. A perfect example of using mediocre players in the right scheme and having success is what Saban did with the D when he was here.

(for the record, I hate Saban but give credit where credit is due)

I disagree that this offense will be similiar to Cameron's. If that was true then Lorenzo Booker would still be here wouldn't he?
