Even in the no-holds-barred world of the NFL, where a head coach can get a free pass after using the female pronoun 'she' to describe a male player, Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland took a moon leap out of bounds when he asked Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant during a pre-draft interview if the player's mother used to be a prostitute.
    Or did he?
Two sources familiar with the situation contend that Ireland's question was nothing more than the logical follow-up to comments Bryant had made about his family. According to the sources, Ireland began the meeting by asking Bryant, 21, about his upbringing and his relationship with his siblings. Then he asked what Bryant's father did for a living when Bryant was growing up. The following exchange allegedly ensued:
    "My dad was a pimp."
"What did your mom do [for a living]?"
    "She worked for my dad."
    "Your mom was a prostitute?"
    "No, she wasn't a prostitute."

lol..can you imagine...''she worked for my dad''

I don't care what context it's in, it's never logical to ask if someone's mom is a prostitute. It was a stupid question in 2010 and it's still stupid in 2012. But find us a franchise QB and all is forgiven Jeffrey.

Until he messes up another draft and free agency period and the Dolphins end up finishing below 500 again next year. Then Ross will finally see that Ireland is the real problem with this team.

Confirmation bias. You want to dislike Ireland and disregard everything that goes against it. If you said you worked on a pirate ship, wouldn't it then make sense to ask if you were a pirate?

You can't refer to a drug-dealing escort as a prostitute. It's too simplistic, and quite frankly, very demeaning to the profession.

Actually it's quite the opposite. I really want to like Ireland but his inability to resolve the QB situation makes it tough, weaselly tendencies and foolish questions to NFL prospects aside.

But by all means, you guys have fun discussing all the numerous situations in which it is appropriate to ask someone if their mom is a prostitute. I'm gonna go hang out back in 2012 now.

if your referring to me posting an article from sports illustrated, yes it is, Iam sure Ireland and HIS family has taken a beating from the sensationalism on behalf of the media, anything that can soften that perception {like not doing anything wrong in the first place} Iam gonna do while he's part of our franchise.

Think about yourself, wouldn't you want your name cleared if you were innocent..your one of ours, hes one of ours.

if you think Ireland had the power of a first time GM under the watch of Parcells, to get who he wanted, not sure your thinking that thru.

Actually, I like Ireland. But the question shouldn't have been asked because of the universal schoolyard rule that we don't talk about mothers. Besides, in your example, if a guy on a pirate ship has an eyepatch, a cutlass and a parrot on his shoulder, it's unnecessary to ask him if he's a pirate, just as the son of a pimp whose mother worked for his father need not be asked whether his mother is a prostitute. The environment he came from is already revealed, which is the only relevance of the question, without insulting his mother. But that's just me. Ireland doesn't have to have class to be a good GM.

Not a very far leap from pimp in training to prostitute. Not sure how thats exactly insulting. Either way what she did was illegal, dangerous, etc you name it. And either way if I'm a GM your damn right I want to know if thats the world my prospect came from and if there are any residual effects of it.

Nothing in that article suggests he is innocent. He asked the question. The "sources" used by the suthor could have only been Ireland or somebody else from the Dolphins so his view of the context of the question doesn't make it the truth or let him off the hook.

Secondly, even if the context is accurate, somehow only Ireland went so far as to ask him if his mother was a whore. I'm sure other teams asked about his father yet managed to reatrain themselves from asking an obviously loaded question.

Third, it was two years ago. The man is like a roach that can survive a nuclear holocaust. He is still here and in charge despite all logic. Don't think anybody cares about this anymore. It's still funny, but not an issue.

I think it's pretty easy to see that Jeff Ireland is socially inept. The only reason he's here is because the owner can push him around.

You sound like KP on the Henne issue. You're right while the rest of us aren't living in 2012.

Problem being pirates didn't wear eyepatches or parrots. And yes, it turns out Bryant did have to be asked because he vehemently denied it.

I rip Ireland all the time.

This is a stupid reason to.

If you dont like the question, dont give an answer that makes it a legitimate follow-up.
"she manages the finances of my dad's business" would have been what Dez was trying to say, had he actually gone to class.

but he didn't which lead us to this mess. and if memory serves me correctly there were rumblings going around just prior to the combine that his mother was a prostitute. where is the backlash on Dez and his people since that was out there and the incident in question was leaked by his people? other than the apology the Phins have not said one thing about it. Dez's people should have been all over this before it became this issue and should have not leaked this to the press and dealt with the NFL properly.

Who said anything about being offended by his comment? It had zero to do with our feelings and everything to do with the way it was perceived by Dez Bryant, the media and the rest of the NFL. Notice I'm using the past tense, since this story is ancient history.

It's 100% pointless to be discussing this in 2012, which I understand is a ridiculous statement since here I am discussing it again. The OP was pro Ireland, so if you really want to do the man a favor LET IT DIE. Digging this up 2 years later accomplishes nothing positive.

Let's judge Ireland based on how he finally addresses or fails to address the QB situation here in 2012. That's what matters.

Ireland's job is to grill the multi-million dollar prospects, right? To see what makes them tick, to see how they respond to pressure...this question could have been asked by a media member. I see nothing wrong with his hard-nosed approach to the interview, if anything it proves to me that he's a good high-intensity interviewer.
This isn't a McDonald's crew interview, I would liken this to a career changing examination. You think a future employer isn't going to ask difficult questions about your past?
Get over it. He's a prima donna and Ireland gets cool points TWO fold for asking this question AND not drafting that loser.
I'm pretty sure that he said this after the draft right? My spidey-senses are telling me that this story only came out cause Jerry Jones has a bone to pick with Ireland...or "Bill Parcells Junior" in the words of Jones himself. He heard this happened and probably told Bryant to come out with the story. These questions(maybe not this one specifically) are probably common, and Ireland just laughed at the situation, and apologized.

I like conservatism out of my favorite football team's GM. Some people are just so biased against Ireland that they even defy their own mindset.

EDIT- this article is 2 years old anyway, djphinfan. why rehash it?
