I think he's right. Besides a franchise QB I don't think this Dolphins team is missing that much. Unfortunately, the franchise QB is the hardest part. Let's hope Jeffrey gets it right this year.

RT, RG, FS, 2nd WR, CB depth, another MLB (if switching to 4-3), etc....

In the 90s I would agree with you. In the 2000s we have a different NFL where you do not need a complete team to win the superbowl.

I would love to know what he and the coaching staff think those holes are. Also, which current players on the roster that he is confident he can make better.

I won't argue with you that there are other pieces needed on the roster. But a franchise QB can help hide a lot of weaknesses. You need look no further than Indianapolis and the Colts for proof of this.

Oh, and you forgot TE.

Re: TE.... I KNEW I forgot something.

I realize you don't need all the pieces for a championship, but I still see plenty missing. Nothing that isn't addressable through the draft and FA, though.

Even the best teams have some holes....the Patriots are far from a perfect team, especially on defense, but their offense is very good and they win because they can outscore most teams. But the Giants won the Superbowl because they played the best come playoff time, and they are very solid on both offense and defense. I think we should model ourselves after them. I don't think Eli Manning is the best QB in the NFL, but he is smart and doesn't turn the ball over too much...he has three solid receivers in Cruz, Manningham and Nicks. They have a pretty decent running game with Bradshaw and Jacobs. Their defense has great pass rushers. They are far from perfect but they don't have too many weaknesses, and the key is they play as a team.

I think we should look at adding a top pass rusher like Courtney Upshaw of Alabama. Add a top WR....Dwayne Bowe and Reggie Wayne are free agents if we don't draft any top WR's. Add a solid TE like Fleener of Stanford or Dwayne Allen of Clemson. I also think we could use a better CB than Sean Smith who I would move to Safety. Draft Trumaine Johnson of Montana to play CB....the guy is great in coverage and hammering people. That's just some moves I would make.

The last two years Sparano talked about loving the players he had on the team. All Sherman is doing is exactly what you would expect any new coach to say. Obviously he isn't going to come out and tell fans that besides the often injured Bush, the Dolphins really don't have another quality running back on the team. He also isn't going to point out that the TE position is a position of weakness and that other than Marshall, the receiving corp is adequate at best.

The worst unit on the entire offense is the offensive line, but it isn't good PR to point that out. Of course the biggest need on the entire offense is a quality QB, which it appears the Dolphins are going to have a difficult time filling during this off season.

There is a reason the Dolphins have been a below average team for each of the last three seasons and it wasn't all Sparano. It was the overall lack of talent throughout the roster. The vast majority of the starters on the Dolphins would be no more than backups on the better teams in the NFL. Until the talent level throughout the roster is improved, the Dolphins will remain a bottom tier team in the NFL, no matter what Sherman implies in his PR statement.

All these positions could need an upgrade but if you get a really good RT, you can put in a decent RG next to him and still have an excellent offensive line overall.

Get a really good Qb and he can make the Wr's so much better.

Cb, imo, is the least of this teams worries. Smith did not have a good year but I'm not willing to give up on him at all. Jimmy Wilson looks like he could be really good. So with that making 3 solid Cb's they just need some depth like you said. That should be fairly easy to do without taking one high in the draft or spending much on one as a FA.

Free safety is an absolute need imo

Lb's are also in decent shape. Dansby will be really solid as a MLB. I think they need one on the outside who can play the run solid and be a good blitzing Lb.

TE is a priority to me and so would be having the correct players across the defensive line if the switch to 4/3 is for sure. I would much rather see them get a couple of big hoss' to protect the Lb's and stop the runs up the gut. Having those will solidify the run protection and if they can have two solid pass rushers it will protect the Cb's all the more...

So a couple of smart moves and this team can improve big time imo...

These were my sentiments exactly last year when Coach KAY (Sparano) made his silly Gladiator speech that had everyone around here fired up. The reason I wasn't getting a stiffy over Sparano's "coachspeak" was because, in my mind, he had already proved himself to be an ineffectual head coach.

We have a new unit in here now. Yes, they're all saying what we would expect the coach to say. But it's ok to be interested in and even excited about what they might potentially be bringing to the table, IMHO.

My take is that Sherman and Philbin believe that they can build a more efficient offense than the average NFL coach. After reviewing film, they see an offense that resembles a boxer that can stun an opponent with a punch, while lacking the training to put together a combination for a knockout.

The Houston game provides a good example of an offensive player stunning the defense, while play calling never takes advantage to score. With the best possession WR, a 2 way TE, and Daniel Thomas's ability to pierce the DL, Sherman should be confident that the offense can soften the middle of many defenses to achieve the hallmark of a Packers team -- 2nd WR that turns a 10 slant into a TD.

Reggie Bush provides Sherman with a multidimensional that should prove useful to obtain favorable pre-snap match-ups against better defenses. Last year he proved he can run inside, which should help Sherman keep defenses off-balance with run/pass options; helping to improve 3rd down conversions and other game critical situations.

Finally, I'm surprise little has been written about Sherman's time with the Packers, where he developed an outstanding backs to go along with its passing game. Messam's signing hints that Sherman's trying to recreate the skills of Ahmad Green, Najeh Davenport, William Henderson, and Vonta Leach. My guess is that Messam will be developed as a passing down back, where his size may make him an adequate blocker and this read/react running against pass defenders offers a higher chance of success for a high runner.

I thought Mike Sherman's press availabilities were a lot more interesting than Kevin Coyle's. The content of the things he was saying reminded me a lot of what drew me to Joe Philbin. Sherman talked about key things in what he looks for in his quarterbacks (confidence, feet). He mentioned that he really thought there were some hidden talents especially on the offensive line that he would like to exploit. He talked about the West Coast Offense and how rhythm oriented it is, everything being about the 1-2-3, which believe it or not actually says a lot about what we're going to run here and who they need to get to run it. When I was watching him in these interviews, I felt like I was actually learning things about this team and this offense.

At one point he talked about the "new offense" phenomenon with teams like the Packers, Patriots and Saints...and I thought he brought up a really excellent point. With those offenses, the way they ran them wasn't just about having good quarterbacks. It was about having good quarterbacks playing in systems they've been tooling around in for years and years, with skill players that they've been playing with for years. That's a common denominator in all three of those offenses, how incredibly well situated those QBs were in their offensive schemes as well as with their skill players. The only one of the three that made heavy use of a "new" guy in the offense was Drew Brees with Darren Sproles, but even that wasn't really new. Sproles did a lot of the same things Reggie Bush was doing in that offense. He just did them better.

But I watched Kevin Coyle speak in both availabilities, and I felt like I learned absolutely nothing. I might as well have not watched those interviews. This is an insanely early prediction based on not a lot, so take it with a grain of salt, but I'm already getting the feeling that we're going to be replacing our Defensive Coordinator within 3 years.

I took the Same things away from both coordinators, I just hope mine was a false instinct..

Sherman's thoughts.on how he starts from the feet up on his Qb's was interesting, and his compliments about Tannehill pretty cool.

It seems to me every NFL team, including the top-tier, have at least 2-3 "holes to fill". IMVHO what makes them "top-tier" or even SB winners is coaching. I like Tony Sparano but he had no experience as a HC, nor was he particularly effective with the talent he did have. Philbin, Marshall and Coyle are all also unknowns to the degree of HC experience but I feel good about the approach they are taking and have high hopes for them. Ireland has shown a steady ability to obtain decent players to fill "holes", so IMVHO the biggest questionmark on our Dolphins right now is can we obtain a "franchise" QB?

And honestly I believe it isn't just drafting or obtaining the QB with all the talent, as much as it is the ability of the coaches to turn that talent into a franchise QB. It does not happen overnight very often, but I see some coaches on this team now that I have a higher level of confidence they can coach up a QB that may be raw but has talent, into a very good QB, even if it is a "system" QB like Flynn. I don't want Flynn because of the cost, but Weeden, Tannehill, and others we can likely draft could become top tier QB's if Philbin's staff are as good at developing QB's as I hope they are.
