Apparently for real this time. @JasonLaCanfora Ricky Williams informed BAL officials he's retiring. Ends a distinguished if unconventional career. Team would have welcomed him back @AdamSchefter One of the great runs in the NFL has come to an end: Ravens running back Ricky Williams plans to retire. It was probably the most interesting NFL career. Thanks for all the amazing runs! http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...iams-is-ready-to-retire-but-it-may-not-stick/ -PFT isn't so sure he'll stay retired. Haha, well anything is possible.
will Dave Wannstedt be speaking at his ceremony ? seriously Ricky was one hell of a back and he could of haad better numbers if Miami would have thrown the ball therefore Ricky could have forelonged his career by not being beaten down so much Ikind of wised we would have kept Ricky and then Replaced him with the Richardson kid and have Richardson and Bush and only carry two backs.
I've always liked RW the person. He's a guy who has overcome personal issues to straighten his life out and I give him a lot of credit. He did some things that many people can't do... That said, since he quit on our team a week before TC, I stopped trusting him as a player and he has not been the same player since then. For all the good things he's done, the shame of it is, what he could have been. He had the ability to be one of the best of all time and unfortunately he'll never get the opportunity to prove that, even tho many of us knew the talent was there. It's a down right shame.... But I wish him well in the rest of his life...
People will debate if he goes into the Honor Roll. I say maybe. We don't have many players that played from 2000-present who would make it there. JT & Zach Thomas are two obvious ons. The only other 2 who maybe belong are Ricky and Sam Madison, who went to the Giants and got his ring. Unless I'm forgetting any, I try to forget every season since 2004 (except 2008 of course) He will be on WQAM at 3pm.
He said the 2002 Dolphins were the best team he played for and his favorite year, even though it ended horribly. He said they should have beaten the Vikings and Patriots and if Fiedler played halfway decent in the playoffs they would have been tough to beat. Of course we all agree on that I think. If Fiedler didn't have that injury mid-way through the season and miss 5 games (5? I forget), they probably would have went 10-6 and won the division. He still says "who the hell knows" what will happen. So there still could be a small chance he plays for the Ravens again. Kinda like JT, who apparently would consider coming back if Miami wants him and if they get Peyton Manning.
Congrats on a very good career..I hope he's made enough money to be able to do great things in his philanthropic projects..I think he could help a lot of people all over the world..He's got great makeup..
i still think we could have won the superbowl in 2002. i am a huge ricky fan and i wish him all the best in his life outside of football
I'll believe it when I see it. He just said he was probably coming back for another year a few weeks ago lol If he does retire then I'll miss seeing him break up the monotony in the NFL. I'd say yes to the Miami ROH.
I view Ricky mostly in a positive light. And even the negative is purely related to the team. I don't fault him at all on a personal level for quitting. I think he would be a good advocate for marijuana use for people with similar problems that he has.
I am an old guy, a Dolfan since '71. I remember most if not all of our great players. Ricky is in my opinion the 2nd best player in Dolphin history, and easily my favorite player of all time. I know he had serious faults, and he hurt our franchise with his inability to operate within the NFL's draconian rules regarding marijuana. But damn, when he carried the rock, it was a thing of absolute beauty.
I am not sure what Ricky retiring has to do with drafting Richardson and teaming him with Bush. The last I checked, Ricky played for the Ravens this past season and wasn't the back teaming with Bush in the Dolphins backfield during the 2011 season. I would love to see the Dolphins draft Richardson though. Unfortunately Ireland is still making the draft day decisions for the Dolphins, so I expect them to pass on Richardson and select another offensive lineman in the first round. I figure that if Ireland keeps throwing enough drafts picks and millions of dollars in free agency on the offensive line, he might eventually build at least a mediocre offensive line in Miami.
Good luck,Ricky. He was a heck of a player that could have been an all time great with the right team and self disipline.
Glad he was able to redeem himself in the league and with the Dolphins. I thought it was great that he was able to pull off another 1000 yard year after being away for so long. The talent that he had was right up there with the likes of Barry Sanders and Walter Payton.
The 2002 Ricky... damn, what a running back. Loved his running style and seeing him have a great game in person against the Panthers. That game was the first game after Ronnie had went out for the season, so needed Ricky to carry the load and he did.
Congrats to Ricky. He had a good career, and was especially great for us. Shame though part of us will always be left wondering what could have been had he not gotten sidetracked and lost a few years with the drugs/suspension/"early retirement".
Man, he was still one of my favorite players even when he was on the Ravens squad. I think you could easily say Ricky would've been a HOF RB if he wouldn't have missed all that time. Run Ricky Run!
If Ricky Williams was as talented in his head as he was with his body he would be in the Hall of Fame. The guy had all the talent in the world, just didn't have the HOF mindset.
Very true, I'm still shocked that Ricky was able to post 1,100 yards and 11 TDs after Ronnie got injured in 2009. He was able to show he was still able to run, another Dolphin great.
You're assuming he cares as much about the HOF as you think he does. He absolutely seems like a guy who cares very little about awards and things of that nature.
I didn't really mean it like that. What I meant to say was I don't think Ricky ever set his sights on the HOF.
I think there were times when Ricky did have his sights set on the HOF. In fact I do believe that if the NFL didn't have such a spotlight on him like in the 70s, he would have been more motivated to be a HOF runningback. This is mostly going from his quotes and quotes of people around him. He just couldn't handle the glitz and glamour part of the NFL. From what I read about him the part where he stopped having his sights set on the HOF was after his time in India and he was able to start playing more for the love of the game.
I just think he resented the media and all the ridiculous attention. He just never wanted to be in the circus. I agree if the NFL wasn't putting that spotlight on him that he would of been even more ridiculous.
Never understood why Dolphin fans burned their Ricky jerseys..... I kept mine and sure it is beat all to hell..... I'll wear it.
Because he, who was probably the best player on offense, decided to quit on his team? It's tough not to get pissed at the time.
Untimely yes.... The day before training camp. He failed a piss test man. Do you remember the day Rick came to the City of Miami? Didn't his Hummer get pulled over in front of the Herald building. Searched? He was marked. Found nothing BTW.
