If we do not obtain Manning's services and go after Flynn I hope we are conservative. Matt Flynn, as the article states, has a very short sample to gauge from and betting the farm on a guy like that I am totally against I hope Philban has enough sense to go after a big arm in the draft ......not this guy who is not accurate deep and is known to not have a big arm. More mediocrity would just kill us. We need to step it up. here's to hoping Philban doesn't tie himself to Flynn.
If we're looking at 90% of the names on that list at tight end instead of Charles Clay someone needs to be hit in the face with a soup can.
Going with Matt Flynn carries less risk right now than waiting on Peyton Manning. In different circumstances, I wouldn't mind waiting to see if Peyton recovers and falls into our lap a la Chad Pennington (different injury). However, Miami's owner, front office, and big mouth receiver has completely undermined Matt Moore to the point that it is highly unlikely that you can bring him back as the starter next year. If you wait on Peyton Manning and hope he recovers, then you are essentially putting your money in Matt Moore's boat considering that it is highly unlikely that Peyton will return to form from a medical standpoint. He will have residual weakness of that triceps, decreased ROM of his neck, and is more susceptible to whiplash injury now than he was previously. Plus, if you wait on Peyton Manning, you almost have to take a quarterback very high, if not in the first round. If you sign Matt Flynn, you can use those high picks on players to put around him.
This is assuming Flynn is the answer. Essentially any QB we acquire be it trade,FA, draft, will be a gamble. The only bottom line is we MUST take a chance and do something. Any move is a risk not knowing the outcome but its necessary at this point. We just cant stand pat with what we have.
I watched a lot of Stanford games this year, and would love to draft Coby Fleener for Manning to throw to.
Its an iffy situation either way; Manning's arm vs. Flynn's small sample size. They will both only cost money but with Manning you could possibly get him to agree to a safer contract with injury protection for the team while Flynn will ask for, and probably get, a big contract from someone. Either way, I agree that we need to invest in another young QB in the draft. I am also curious to see if our new Head Coach & staff can turn Devlin into our version of Flynn ... develop and play him enough to peak some interest of a QB needy team.
I keep reading some fans criticize Flynn for not having a big arm and being able to throw it deep. Yet Flynn was 3-3, 134 yards, 2 TD...158.3 QB rating And Brady was 1-15, 46 yards, 0 TD...39.86 QB rating Seems to me Brady and the Patriots have done fairly well. And when a short sample includes putting up the following: 55-81, 731 yards, 9 TD, 2 int....123.02 QB rating It is simply the BEST 2 game start any QB has EVER had. Our HC worked with him for 4 years so will have a great read on whether he is NFL starter material, he would cost less money than Manning and we keep all our draft picks. Yet, many fans think the solution is to just spend a 1st round draft pick on a QB who has zero NFL experience or to sign a 36 year old QB who didn't play last year and is coming off triple neck surgery who doesn't have strength in his arm. Reconfirms that being a fan is more emotional than it is logical when it comes to deciding on what is best for the team.
Amen. I am continuing to be amazed at the perceived value of Matt Flynn. I am not convinced he'd beat out Moore for the job.
I'm totally convinced Flynn would beat out Moore for the starting spot. He'd be brought in clearly as Philbins' favored QB, knows the offensive system very well, and be making starter money. Moore would be taking a seat on the bench for certain. If Philbin does want Flynn I don't see him being a bust QB for us, but the ceiling? His lack of arm strength would hold him back from ever being elite or even very good. I think we would have a closer to average starter QB who would do well in getting the ball to his play-makers on offense. Do we have enough offense weapons? Not yet, but we could add another 1-2 in this draft. If Ross is set on Peyton (and it makes sense given that he would sell tickets, jerseys, get Miami national attention/televised games, and offer a chance at having an elite-very good QB for 2-3 years) then I think we end up waiting on him, despite the risks.
If Manning checks out positively with his arm strength, I look forward to a Ross specialty...The full court press..That man will roll it out big time..lol...seriously, I'am sure he will do everything imaginable to sign him..
I think Miami's HC can help decide if Flynn is the guy he knows him well, but to compare Flynn to Manning is ridiculous, Manning with all the risks trumps Flynn every time. Flynn has done nothing. Flynn= Feely
why are people so in love with Matt moore if half the people in big 12 country are smart enough to see that Moore isnt the answer i would hope some fin fans would figure it out . I like Clay but we need a stud tightend and the draft is probally our best bet. lets get Peyton , Sage and draft that kid from Boise State whos name escapes me. we need two more wrs that much I am hoping for.
Peyton Manning at 80 percent makes us relevant and Super Bowl contenders. Flynn doesn't. In fact, he is far more likely to be the next AJ Feeley, Jay Fiedler Or Kevin Kolb than a QB to lead us to playoff glory.. I'd take relevance for 2 years over the crap we have dealt with since 2000
Absolutely clueless! To compare the 34 year old Manning to Flynn before neck injury is ridiculous. To compare a 26 year old Flynn who has had 4 years of teaching in Philbin's offense vs. a 36 year old QB coming off triple neck surgery who doesn't have arm strength is NOT ridiculous. Perhaps you are too young to have watches Dan Marino in 1999 when he had shoulder problems and didn't have the arm strength to get the ball to his WRs...finished the year throwing 6 TD passes and 13 interceptions. Mannin is at best 2-3 years. Flynn may be a 10-12 year solution. Flynn = Feely...show me ANY two game Feely started that compares to Flynn's ONLY two starts. I know you CAN'T!
you're all assuming flynn could beat out moore...not saying he can't, but 50-60 million is a lot if you don't know if he can beat out your current starter...and god forbid that scenario does happen, ross better sell the team and philbin should pack his bags...even those who were advicates of the move would flip
This whole thing smells like a huge, steaming, stinky pile of Kolb! waiting on Manning is not that risky if you dont really care about Flynn. If we waited and missed out, I would still have no prob bringing in say Jason Campbell or even Orton to compete with Weeden, Tannehill, etc.
If it comes down to taking a chance on Manning and losing Flynn, then I am all for it.. If we then draft a Weeden or Tanehill... Flynn isn't worth the risk of losing out on the opportunity to pick up Manning, especially since we can still use that 1st round pick on a QB that may have a higher skillset than Flynn...
He would beat out Moore the minute he signs the contract. Anyone who actually believes that the Dolphins would sign Flynn for a contract in the eight to ten million dollars a year range, and then open the QB job up as a competition between Moore and Flynn is just fooling themselves. I have no idea if the Dolphins even have any interest in signing Flynn but if they do, he will be signed to be the starting QB only and Moore will once again be the teams backup QB in 2012.
What make Flynn any different then Matt Hasselbeck when he came out of green bay. Hasselbeck had only 1 start and Mike Holmgren still traded for him because he knew how good he was. Miami almost traded for him but the Stache was too late calling GB. One thing about Green Bay they know how to groom QB. I think Brunell came from GB too and he did ok for the Jaguars. Im all for Matt Flynn.
So, are you saying that getting Matt Flynn is not worth passing on the opportunity to get the Manning name? Because that is essentially what Miami will be getting. If you think Peyton is going to return to form and be the elite quarterback he was 5 years ago, then you simply do not understand the nature of his injury. There are reports saying that Peyton has lost 40% of his previous arm strength because of the nerve problem.
