Philbin is going to want do a lot of things that I've got little confidence Incognito has an ability to do at any position on the line. He's not going to be protected by moving to Right Guard, because there's still going to be a lot of zone plays he can't move well enough on. I don't think he's a bad player by any means but he plays like he's 350lbs. not 325. This team was an absolute dumpster fire on even inside zones this year and Incognito was a pretty big part of it.

Personally I've always been more a fan of the 4-3. In my opinion it is easier to mask flaws in a 4-3 than the 3-4. For example if you don't have a top pass rusher, or your top pass rusher has a poor year your defense is basically screwed. If you have the perfect personnel for the 3-4 I believe it is a great defensive base to run, better than the 4-3. However I think it is MUCH easier to build an effective 4-3.

My dream scenario is to play a base 4-3 with some 3-4 looks thrown in.

Every 4-3 team does exactly that, the 4-3 merely means you have to shuffle some roster slots for more Dlinemen over linebackers, otherwise, not a huge difference.

What I like about the 4-3 is it is just easier to find players for it, the 3-4 has 4 players who have learning curves which raises the bust factor.

I hate to say it but the defensive scheme under Saban was perfect. I'm not saying the defense itself was, but that is pretty much exactly what I would run as a coordinator. Very good mix between the base 4-3 and 3-4.

How good is Scott Wells from G.B.

A powerful running line could run over the league and it's within reach with a couple good moves.

The thought of us switching to a 43 sounds like a good one to me. Odrick and Starks clearly has to switch to defensive tackles for this to work though. Langford and Wake are on the outside unless we somehow sign Mario Williams which would be flat out awesome. We would then need a rugged tackling middle linebacker with Dansby and Burnett playing on the other sides. The MLF from Boston College would be a perfect pick or we could sign Dan Connor from the Panthers to fill that role. D'Qwell Jackson comes to mind too but that would mean we miss out on Williams probably.

Didn't read the whole thread but something to mention (worth repeating perhaps) is that if we do let Soliai walk, you'd think we'd get a compensatory pick in 2013. Now, that reward formula is a little complex, but the fact that he's now a "pro bowler" should push his salary higher and help us get a higher pick.

Colombo's missed blocks alone were as much the difference between 6-10 and 9-7 as anything.

Green Bay's consistently ranked near the top of the league in ints over the past 5 seasons is one reason I suggested Darren Perry as a candidate possibly for being our DC.

The best screen blocker though was C Scott Wells, rather than either guard.

With what Perry's done with their secondary, I'd love to see what he can do with our young group that's still in need of developing.

I wouldn't be surprised if they brought in Manning and then in fact brought in a guy like Scott Wells. Cs tend to last a while and asking a C to play well until 34-35 isn't crazy.

    A line with:

    LT- Long
    LG- Pouncey
    C- Scott Wells
    RG- Garner
    RT- Jerry

    Could do some real damage.

Per Irish.....• Though he said he would like to re-sign both Paul Soliai and Kendall Langford, “I’m not so sure you can do both of them from a cap situation standpoint.”
    • He said he could envision Karlos Dansby playing middle linebacker in a 4-3 defense, but that would be up to the coaches. Though Soliai is ideal for the 3-4, “I don’t think a player of his caliber loses value when you move from one defense to another. He fits both schemes.”

And Ireland said “the good thing about Jared Odrick is he can play inside or outside. He played both at Penn State. I could see utilizing him in the same way.”

It sounds like re-signing Solai is a higher priority than Langford. I can't disagree with this thought process.

Yeah, I think people are forgetting that a 4-3 can still use an NT.

Per Herald....Solai's agent stating he's unlikely to resign with Miami. WTF?! I just don't get it. Our new D coordinator & Irish better find a way to keep this guy on the field.

Good. It's silly to spend a ton of money on a player who is primarily a run stuffer in a 4-3. Get penetrating pass rushers and spend the money better. We have Odrick, Starks, McDaniel and in general 4-3 tackles are a lot easier to find. You don't need to spend a ton on one player.

The thing is, if I'm Soliai and his agent, I want 3/4 NT money...then I'll play 4/3 inside or 3/4 or whatever you want me to play. If Soliai hit's FA, with the premium on 3/4 NT and what he's shown, he'll get paid. That's more along the lines of what Irish was trying to imply, that signing both would be difficult. Langford is likely a better candidate in a 3/4 as well, but should be easier to re-sign (money-wise). Generally all the guys along the DL are versatile enough to fit either scheme or more likely a hybrid scheme that gets the best guys on the field more often. While I'd love to keep Soliai around, because he's finally become a pretty good 3/4 NT, but can we or more accurately, will he stay here for less money ?? I doubt it...

I think it is very possible the Dolphins will fail to sign either Langford or Soliai. As far as those who want the Dolphins to resign Merlin. Over the last two years, Merlin has had a grant total of 6 tackles and one assist, with zero sacks. Merlin has been a total bust as the 32nd pick in the first round of the 2008 draft.

Losing Merlin means absolutely nothing, but if the Dolphins lose both Langford and Soliai, I see a severe drop off in the play of the defensive line next year. I already think that the defense is going to take a step backwards next year because of the loss of Nolan as the teams DC. Losing Langford and Soliai will only increase the possible decline on the defensive side of the ball during the 2012 season.
