Since 2000: Only Bill Belichick & Tom Coughlin have won SBs with one team after being HC of another team. How many HC have moved to different teams since 2000? I'm willing to bet there's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay fewer multiple team HC's to win a SB then there are coordinators to have one won them.
Wow did this thread go to hell! I voted that I don't like the hire. I don't feel he was the best choice out there between the "new head coach" candidate group. I don't feel we took the time to really interview and dig into other candidates we should have that are talked about as possible new HC's that are ready now. I believe there are very valid questions about Philbin's role in Green Bay regardless of the two people in this thread that will call me an idiot for suggesting this as they already did in another thread and I see they are continuing that here. Good for you! You're awesome! Having said all that.... As Section posted.... It's a done deal. We all have to hope for the best. Go Philbin!
I just don't understand it. Ross hires a guy that immediately becomes the smartest guy in the room and there are still naysayers. Watch the video again. Ross looks like a guy watching his son give a valedictorian speech and Irish realizes he is just the talent scout. This is the proven model that needs to be followed.
To be fair though, we're talking about a room with Armando, Omar, and the rest of the SoFlo media ******s in it.
I like the hiring. PS Looks like Chip Kelly is going to coach Tampa, they are said to be working on a deal. Does that change anyone's thoughts?
I am voting present. I am not going to be excited over any hire until I ssee this team turned around for real. Too many times in the last decade I've gotten "excited" over the hiring of a new coach only to let me and the rest of the fandom down. Although I think he sounded competent at the presser, he's going to have to prove it with the team on the field.
So have you chosen a new favorite team, or will you just watch a mix of teams and games for a while before selecting a new one?
Just like there is not one shred of fact to say he won't be successful. The logical course of action for we fans is wait and see and give the man a chance.
Don Rickles rocked in Kelly's Heroes. Maybe you could find a jpeg of him from that movie for an avatar.
You are absolutely correct. Philbin might buck the trend and be that rare coordinator that turns out to be a great head coach. However, I doubt it.
TBH, I thought Zimmer was more of a sure thing, Philbin has more upside imo, but if we wanted to win with a greater chance of doing so in 2012, Zimmer was the guy for the job, with Philbin I'd expect a shakeup and a rebuilt offense, it takes time for that to gel. Defense can gel quickly, no worries, offense, not so much.
I don't know. I've enjoyed watching a mix of teams for several years now. It's hard for me to root for anyone other than the Phins. I still hate the Jets with a passion, so I got that on Sundays. I'm certainly a Fisher fan, as I've made all of you so aware of lately. I'll keep up with how he's doing. I won't be buying a Rams jersey, though. I still have my autographed HOF #66 Larry Little. I still have my #13 Marino, and my #34 Ricky Williams. Those aren't going anywhere. I guess I'm just a football fan now. I feel like... like... you think this thread is bad? you should see my jets and giant fan friends going at it on my Facebook page. jetsnation is imploding as we speak.
Great coaches ARE rare. Coordinators who were given first time head coaching positions... and then failed... outnumber them by a wide margin. Is Joe Philbin on Bill Belichick's level? Is he even close? I seriously, seriously doubt it.
Sparano was an assistant head coach. Plus with the way the NFL does coaching there isn't that big a difference between offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.
That would be an interesting stat. I certainly don't have time to look it up. How many Jerry Glanvilles have there been for every Tom Landry? How many Steve Spurriers for every Don Shula? How many Cam Camerons for every Bill Belichick? I'd wager with the number of firings/hirings every season, there are a lot.
Yes, and coaches who were head coaches before and then failed have outnumbered them by a wide margin. Also college coaches who become head coaches fail by a wide margin as well.
Reality is LL, this is a game where a Shula or Noll or Grant are anamolies, not the rule, coaches typically move along after 8 yrs or so,mostly less, even if they are successful, like Holmgren leaving Green Bay, and even then excption, not rule, this league is built on the backs of Rich Brooks and Cam Cameron more so then Belicheck or Harbaughs. Retread HC's have justas high of a failure rate as Coordiantors, so it really comes down to a roll of the dice at the end of it all.
Jet fans are jealous of, and hate the Giants and their fans. Giant fans really could care less about the jests, except that they were mildly annoyed with rexy's antics and crap talk. so yeah, after their coach proclaimed that "they" were the best team in NYC...its pretty much the jests nightmares come true. its a beautiful thing.
Correct. However, I think you'd likely have more success selecting a head coach from one list over the other. I'd wager picking a proven, experienced head coach gives you a better chance of success.
Now, we are slowly inching closer to my whole point here. Yes, choosing a head coach is difficult. It is often a crapshoot... except when you land a proven head coach. And, sorry, Pads. I don't agree that the NFL is built more on the back of Cam Cameron than Bill Belichick. I think I understand the gist of what you're getting at, that its the little guys who do the dirty work. But, the NFL is built on the game, and guys like Belichick simply define the game. Cameron just plays it.
I still don't see how a guy who had 6 winning seasons and won 5 playoffs games in a 17 year span is a proven coach.
I would wager that even if the chance of success is greater, the percentage is so small that it doesn't really make much of a difference.
Did some math and projected Jeff Fisher's career average stats over a 61 game stretch (the same number of games Sparano coached for us) and the numbers may surprise you. Jeff Fisher over a 61 game stretch projects out to a 34-27 record with a 1-1 post season record. Tony Sparano over a 61 game stretch posted a 29-32 record with a 0-1 post season record. According to math Jeff Fisher is 5 regular season games and 1 post season game over a 61 game span better than Tony Sparano the guy we couldn't wait to run out of town. Is an additional 1.25 wins a year and a, in the grand scheme of things, meaningless playoff win really that huge of a gap that we should be bemoaning his going to St. Louis? And even then I'm being a bit generous with Fisher by throwing out his 1-5 first season with the Oilers. Jeff Fisher's career win percentage is .542 and I have him calculated at .557.
That's not always even a guarantee. Consider the Saints, hiring a proven Super Bowl winner in Mike Ditka. 63% W-L pct and 7 trips to the playoffs in ten yrs in Chicago, then a 31% W-L pct in 3 seasons in Nawlins.
Could it be any worse? He seems to know how to get the best out of his QB. Seeing as, I think, we won't go all out to get one of quality in the draft then it could be a learning season next season. If on the other hand he demands a trade up to get a quality QB to mould, then we could be in for an exciting ride next season!!!
I will say that it's a little disappointing about the news Tampa Bay is luring Chip Kelly. Either we did a poor job of making serious overtures for him, or that Tampa Bay (like St. Louis) is viewed as a better situation than Miami.
I watched George Seifert, as prove a HC as you could find, go 1-15 in Carolina, there are no short cuts LL, and a "proven" HC is not a magic bullet, Eric Mangini flaming out in Cleveland for example. Not my thrust, the fact is, there are sharks and guppies, 12 teams make the playoffs, 20 do not make it, the majority of coaches fail yr in and yr out LL.
I'm excited about the hire. In hearing him speak, and in reading what other say about him, he seems to be a high character individual with clear ideas about how he wants to run the team. Welcome aboard Coach Philbin and best of luck! I'll be there in the stands as always.
