Well, the near month long coaching search has come to an end with Joe Philbin landing the job. I liked Mike Zimmer, and was interested in Dave Toub, but Ross had his heart set on Philbin 15 minutes into his interview. So he is the 7th full time HC in Dolphins history joining: George Wilson, whom I know nothing about. Don Shula we all know Jimmy Johnson we made the playoffs 3 straight yrs, added HoFers Thomas and Taylor Dave Wannstadt believe it or not, second most wins in dolphins history Nick Saban utterly forgettable Cam Cameron, ditto Tony Sparano, playoffs one yr Joe Philbin The Qb determines the Coaches fate in most situations, though for the most part what success we have had post Shula has been running the ball, Philbin claims that he is not going to drop the packers playbook on the table in south florida, that remains to be seen. Do think we will see far more pass attempts then we have the last decade. So do my fellow dolphins fans like the hire, or not?
I see. I'm cautiously optimistic, I think there are good pieces on the roster, but a bit to much weakness in the ancillary players.
I think this is the lone response as to why anyone is happy with the hire...other than coming across well at the presser. Forgive me if I have missed other posts and explanations why.
I like the hire considering what the choices were. I think it was always going to be someone that was more offense minded that came from a winning background. I think Philbin is well respected and should be a good hire. At some point one has to think that maybe we get the upper hand on a deal with Flynn in free agency and that would be a bonus. I liked McCoy too but think Philbin was the better decision out of the two. I think out of all the candidates Ross just wanted someone that came from a successful background most of all. After evrything that has happened to Philbin recently, him taking this promotion to become a head shows me that he is committed and hungry to have the chance to bring this franchise back to success.
Same here.m optimistic with one eye open, but willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. There's a chance we could end up with a really good offense. Been so long, I can hardly remember what a really good dolphins offense looks like
Personally Carmichael was my # 1 choice. But I like Philbin because he is a good xs and os guy, and coming from Green Bay he knows what it takes to win in the NFL.
Yes, I think its a solid signing. His age and experience with the QB and offensive line and TE's will give us what this team needs. Stability, and a fresh overhaul.
I didn't get emotionally invested in any candidate so it's not like this is my guy, but I like the hire for several reasons. First of all, he has the pedigree to be successful. What I mean by that is that under his watch Rodgers developed into a franchise QB, if not the best QB in the league. Add to that the fact that Flynn is highly regarded by many around the league and many fans on this site. Developing QBs is integral to success in today's NFL. I also like that he's not just an offensive coach, but a coach who knows the value of passing the ball. The Tony Sparano/Bill Parcells run first mentality is out dated in today's NFL. He also comes from a culture of winning and expects to win. That kind of attitude can become infectious in the locker room. He seems like an intelligent, high character person who's been lauded by his former players and coaches around the league. I also think he has the right approach to building a team in that you don't have a system and find players to fit it, you build what you do around the players you have. The best teams in the league use this policy. I like what he said about teaching and developing players. This is an area that Miami has been woeful in for several years. We complain every time a player leaves us and does well in another city but it's because we haven't been able to successfully develop players within our organization with any sort of consistency. Several key offensive players developed under the watch of Joe Philbin and that gives me faith he can do the same thing here. I could go on, but I feel I've already hit wall o text territory.
what idiot said no? and why: Spoiler I said this in another thread. Here's my stance, coming with all due respect. I feel Ross has hurt the franchise by sticking by Ireland. He hurt us last year with Harbaugh, and who knows the extent of that throughout the league. I think it scared away the Cowhers or Grudens on what used to be an ideal coaching situation, because the owner lacks in NFL etiquette, plus those guys aren't touching our current GM situation. A guy like Huizenga used to go and get his man though. I was rooting for, well, I don't know if any hiring would have made me happy. I was more looking for Ross to get away from Ireland, and let the whole Parcells era die. I liked Fisher. I am so tired of losing, I wanted a safe and experienced head coach who maybe, under better/less management could evolve...and who was still young enough to evolve. I liked Zimmer, cause at least I know he's mean, and his D will be tough, and his team will be tough. Philbin...reminds me of Cam Cameron. A confident, not so young, offensive mind. But an offensive mind from an established machine. Cameron was part of a system with a great staff and awesome players. But he was just a cog. Left on Dolphin Island, he flopped. Philbin was part of the Green Bay machine. Too many All-stars throughout the organization to bank on just him as being our savior. A coordinator who didn't call plays, who had the aid of a better QB than we could ever hope to get...possibly the best player in all the NFL. And a stellar surrounding cast of players as well. Again, Philbin is one of many parts of that machine. In 07' we were hungry for offense and excitement and a new look in Miami, so we went for the offensive name in the lights. It feels like this is what we did here. We went after the highest profile offensive coach out there. With McCoy, at least he kinda made chicken salad out of Chicken ****. And he is young, and so you don't ask, "why hasn't this happened for him already?" in a league where coaching turnover is constant. Let me conclude by saying I hope I'm wrong.
Yes, at the very least he knows what a good QB looks like, which will help. Potentially, there are other things about him that could help him work out, but this is a huge quality for me!
Philbin reminds me NOTHING of Cam Cameron, no idea how anyone can see that. It sounds like you are set on disliking him because he is not Cowhers or Gruden, why else mention them?
Yeah, really. Cameron was a good guy but he often came off as not having a clue with what he was doing or wanted. Philbin comes off very smart and on top of what it takes to be a winner. As for why I voted yes, here is my post from the PC comment thread...
While I don't know a whole lot about him, all the other sites that I vist love the guy and every Packers fan that has posted on these other sites love the guy. Haven't heard one bad thing about him.

Not so much Gruden. But is that not my right, to have an opinion? The poll asked if and why you do or do not like the hire. I'm 100% rooting for Regis. But he is not the guy I was hoping for. Thus, I'm the lone person who did not like this hire. I simply wanted a different guy(s). If the poll asked, "who wants Regis to succeed?" there would be zero NOs.
Its in my spoiler, but Fisher, Zimmer, or McCoy. And in my gut, I dont think everything was done to make this a desirable job for Cowher. I think he truly wants to coach in the right circumstances. Just what I think.
Who said you can't have an opinion? I didn't. Who said you don't want him to succeed? Again, I didn't. Your logic for disliking him is faulty, especially when you compare him to a total goofball like Cameron. That's what I am pointing out. And I would have liked to have gotten Cowher or even Fisher but that was not meant to be, but it don't mean he is not a good coach and a good choice. Based on your logic you are going to dislike whoever we hire because they ain't someone else, I just fail to understand that kind of thinking. I am sure there were Steeler fans who disliked the hiring of Cowher in 1992 because he wasn't Bill Parcells, but look how that turned out for them.
Even though I like the hire, I like your opinions too. IMO, Cowher would have been a mistake. The man has a house where his backyard is right next to a fairway. Gruden, never really cared for him as a coach. If he was a good coach, then several teams would be after him. Fisher, I'm torn on that one.
Ernie was Burt's man so you'd have the first openly gay GM/HC in NFL history. Would kind of make sense in south florida. Cookie Monster had all the hos.
As solid as Philbin has appeared to be so far, I'm going to be very interested in seeing how he deals with his family **** once the stress of the season is really in full gear. I can see him losing his patience with Omar and Armando before we play a down lol
I don't dislike Philbin, and I am rooting for him. I even hold a some faith/hope that he will be a great coach. He was not the guy I wanted, therefore, generally speaking, I don't like the hire. I mean, that's the logic of the question and this thread isn't it? You can't call Cam Cameron a goofball. He is a stellar offensive coordinator, and they love him in B-more. And the book is yet to be written on Regis as a head coach. What about my opinion is faulty? Its only faulty because you disagree with it. What are we at, 41 to 1 now?
I agree on Gruden. And the part of Cowher that scared me, was that he has been out of the game for a while. What perturbs me the most, is that it seems to me, that..again...Ross did not get who he TRULY wanted.
