These kind of remarks coming from Aaron Rodgers make me feel a bit more confident in Philbin being the right choice.

Playing devils advocate here...... whether they thought he was a large part of their success or not they'd say the same thing they are saying now.
I don't take any solace at all from these comments.
Bottom line is none of us will know whether this was a good choice for a couple years.

I'm uncomfortable with it simply because I believe this is a owner manipulated hire because he wants an offense like Green Bay.
I worry whether they really looked into Philbin deeply enough to really assess his qualities as a coach outside of Green Bay's success. I think we all can agree that the Green Bay offense could be a success with anyone running it. Especially with Rodgers having carte blanche to change plays as I've read a couple places.

I'm hopeful however..... simply because that's all I can do as a Phin fan.

What would you rather us do??? Hire Fisher with his stellar winning record? There wasn't a lot of choices and it seems no matter what Dolphin fans always find a reason to doubt Ross decision. Always looking for a reason to be negative and unhappy with the direction the team is going. Philbin was a great hire considering our options and I give Ross credit for putting his foot down on the whole Fisher deal and not giving in to his request to run everything. We have a new, hugry coach looking to prove himself and turn this franchise around. What more could you ask for? Sure he isn't Gruden or Chower but they had to start somewhere too.....I think Ross made a good choice and the fact that it will give us a possible upper hand in the whole Flynn FA signing is a bonus. Let's fall in behind Philbin and hope for the best. Like you said, really all we can do as Fin fans is support our team and hope for the best

You seem like you're jumping into this coaching search discussion very late.
If all you think there were to choose from were Fisher and Philbin.
I'm not going to review because you haven't followed along till logging in today.

lol, ok...been following along the whole time thanks. So, you wanted to hire Zimmer or McCoy? You act as if there were 5-6 other more qualified coaches we were looking at. I mentioned Fisher because most Fin fans were enamored with the thought of a big named coach and didn't really care about anything else. Don't try to belittle me and act as if I don't follow my team becuse you'd be wrong

How does an owner manipulate a hire?

    It IS the owner's decision!

Well, let's be honest here, no one was worth really pounding the table over to be the next HC.

For me anyway, I don't see a whole lot difference between McCoy/Bowles/Philbin, all 3 are rolls of the dice with no guarantees, I'm glad Ross went with his gut but really really do not want to sit through another rebuilding session.

Philbin's South Beach Offense requires athletic, smart, football players, Irish had been bringing in large, lumbering players, let's watch and see what shakes out this offseason.

People complain that Jimmy Johnson was a bad coach cause he wouldn't let Dan Marino audible at the line of scrimmage, now I've seen many people complain that Philbin will be a bad coach because he ran a system where the QB was allowed to call audibles (yes I know Philbin didn't call plays and no, that really has nothing to do with it.) And to say it's an "owner manipulated hire" or any of the other ridiculous assertions people have made just need to stop. There's more conspiracy theories about the Miami Dolphins front office and the coaching search than Area 51, JFK and Bigfoot combined.

There's nothing "ridiculous" about the possibility of this being an owner manipulated hire.
There are owners that meddle too much and don't let the football people make the decisions they want to make.
Are you saying that does not exist?

It's a distinct possibility and there have been reports to support that possibility.
You can sit there and insinuate I'm an idiot for thinking out all angles on this but it does not change the FACT that there are owners that meddle in the football business of their teams and make decisions that aren't as well thought out as they probably would be if they let their execs do their jobs.

In addition, the Jimmy Johnson scenario and Philbin comparison aren't at all compatible.
People questioned whether it was smart to take away Marino's audible powers because of who Marino was and how proven a QB he was.

The question on Philbin is just how seasoned an OC he really is since he's had an admittedly limited role in that offense.
    Totally different scenario.

Why is it so hard to have an intelligent discussion around here?
Everyone feels the need to twist things into something it's not.
    Unreal.....

It certainly doesn't surprise me that some of the players and coaches in Green Bay spoke highly of Philbin. Many players and coaches, and even the owner of the Dolphins spoke highly in regards to Sparano after he was fired as the head coach of the Dolphins.

Since Philbin has NEVER been a head coach at any level in football, there is absolutely no way of knowing if he is suited for the position. All we can hope as Dolphin fans is that he is as capable in the Dolphins head coaching position as he was in his position as offensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers. Even though he was not the play caller on game game, he was said to have been responsible for developing the offensive game plan during the week.

Philbin obviously wasn't my first choice after Sparano was fired. I will admit that I wanted either Cowher, Gruden, or Fisher. When none of those coaches were available or didn't want the job, I was hoping that that Ross and Ireland would possibly hire Rob Chudzinski.

Well, obviously none of these coaches got the job, so now we all have to hope that the Dolphins front office has finally gotten it right after a decade of getting it wrong. I certainly don't blame Ross and Ireland for the lean years before they took over the organization, but it is now their responsibility to correct the mistakes and finally get this organization headed in the right direction.

I only hope that the hiring of Philbin turns out to be the first giant step forward for a team and fan base which has been waiting far too long for the right man to come in and make us remember why we fell in love with the Dolphins in the first place. For me, Philbin doesn't have to be the next Shula. All I wish him to be is a head coach who can be depended on to put an exciting product on the field each week. Also my expectations are that he will be the coach who will finally gets this team onto the same level as the top tier teams in the NFL within the next few years.

This may seem like my expectation are high, but after a decade in the waste land of the NFL, Dolphin fans are ready to revisit the promise land. Hopefully Philpin is the coach to get us there.

I was unsure at first but his press conference made me feel at ease. I'm sorry but the way Tony Sparano talks I thought we had a mechanic or a plumber as our head coach. Philbin sounds very intelligent, and I could only agree with all of the things he said. He may not be a young gun but his years of coaching experience can only help him adjust to this new situation.

You keep talking about more than a decade of disappointment and yet laud Huizenga. Ross became the owner of the Dolphins 3 years ago yesterday but had no say in football operations because of the golden parachute deal your buddy H Wayne gave to Parcells. Parcells left unexpectedly in Sept of 2010.

If my calculations are correct, Ross has had complete control of the Dolphins for 15 months and made his 1st hire today. How on earth is he the focus of your angst?

While I agree, I wouldn't even put it that far. I'm not saying everyone has to be all in on this guy, but anyone who's already chalking this season up as a loss and Philbin as a failed HC certainly should have their fan card revoked immediately.

If Aaron Rodgers didn't really like Philbin wouldn't he just say nothing? Or some very short PC statement about Philbin? Why would he say all of these things if he didn't really like Philbin? Steven Ross is making him? It doesn't add up, I'm sure it's genuine.

really? so losing the coordinator of our defense isnt going to hurt and installing a system that doesnt mesh with our personnell on offense as its constituted currently isnt going to be a step back the first year? i think if philbon is going to be successful it wont show up till year two and only if he finds a QB who can run a west coast offense. and with our fanbase and owner, if it takes more than two years he wont be around for year three

    This post is absolutely ridiculous.

First off all he said he was going to install an offense that would best fit the personnel, not plop a specific offense on the table and expect our players to adjust. Second off our defensive coordinator always looked out coached in crunch time. I can't count on both hands how many times teams adjusted to our defensive gameplan and we could not do a single thing to adjust back.

Change is scary, I get it. But get over it.

he's a damn good def coordinator. i dont know what you were watching but you'll see the improvement in atlanta's defense next year. and if you think he's going to run some variance of our offense for a year or two before he has all the pieces in place youre mistaken. the only offense he knows is the west coast. maybe i'm wrong. not sure whjat they ran at harvard or maybe he'll run the iowa offense for a year or two. everyone says that crap and then they run what they know

I have never stated that Huizenga was a successful NFL owner. I have merely pointed out that he was always willing to do what was necessary to hire the best people on the market at the time in an attempt to turn the team around. When he hired Jimmy Johnson, I remember the vast majority of Dolphin fans thought this was a great hire and that it was only a matter of time before the Dolphins would be in the Super Bowl again.

I never liked the fact that Huizenga listened to JJ when he hired Wannstedt, but the fact is that until his last year as the coach of the Dolphins, Wannstedt had a 41-23 record with the Dolphins in his first four years, and the Dolphins went to the playoffs twice during those four years. I certainly was vocal at the stadium during Wannstedt's final year when the Dolphins started the season 1-8 with him as the head coach ,that I wanted Huizenga to fire him. While he did not fire Wannstedt, and Wannstedt actually resigned, I have no doubt that Wannstedt already saw the writing on the wall and he knew he was gone as soon as the season was over.

Huizenga went out after that season and hired Saban. While in hindsight this turned out to be a bad hire. At the time Saban was the hottest head coach on the market. Several NFL teams had tried to hire him in previous years but Huizenga was the only NFL owner who was able to convince Saban to leave college and become an NFL head coach. The fact that this didn't work our for the Dolphins or Saban, doesn't mean that at the time of the hiring, most Dolphin fans thought this was a great hire.

When Saban quit and Huizenga had to hire a new head coach. He hired Cam Cameron. While Cameron may be one of the worst head coaches in the history of the NFL. At the time Huizenga hired him, he was the hottest coordinator on the market. Again I certainly don't remember Dolphin fans in an uproar over the Cameron hiring. In fact I remember that many fans thought this was a great hire because they felt Cameron would bring a more exciting offense to Miami. After just one terrible season with Cameron as the teams head coach, Huizenga paid off the remaining years of Cameron's contract and sent him on his way.

Huizenga then went out and hired Bill Parcells to run the entire football operations. This again caused happiness throughout the Dolphin fan base. The vast majority of the fans thought that this was the man that was going to lead the Dolphins to the promise land. Once again the hiring of Parcells failed to turn the organization around to be the consistent winner we all hoped it would be when Parcells was hired.

I will certainly admit that the Huizenga ownership years were not as successful as any of us would have wanted them to be. Huizenga never was a truly successful NFL owner, but it certainly wasn't because he didn't do everything he could financially to improve the front office and the coaching staff. He was always willing to go out and hire what seemed to be the best available talent on the market at the time to run his football team. It just never worked out for him or the fans of the Dolphins

My problem with Ross has been that I have not seen this same commitment from him as an owner, which I saw from Huizenga. Until this year, he has seemed much more interested in building dance clubs at the stadium and bringing in celebrity part owners, than in putting a quality product on the football field. I most definitely have a problem with him keeping Jeff Ireland as the teams GM, because I just don't feel Ireland is very good at his job. I was certainly happy to see that Ross finally got rid of Sparano during this past season, but I felt both Sparano and Ireland should have been fired after the 2010 season.

My first two choices for the new HC was Cowher or Grunden. When they decided that they no longer wanted to coach, my next choice was Fisher. I am totally convinced that if Huizenga had been the owner trying to hire Fisher, instead of Ross, Fisher would be the head coach of the Dolphins today. Of course if Huizenga was still the owner, I also don't think that Jeff Ireland would be the GM of the Dolphins any longer.

I am certainly willing to give Philbin time to see how effective he will be as the Dolphins new head coach. I have said numerous times on this forum that I would love nothing more then to be completely wrong about Ross as an NFL owner and Ireland as an NFL GM. I want more then anything for Ross and Ireland to prove that they actually know how to build a winning football team. Hopefully with the hiring of Philbin, they will have hired the coach that will turn this organization around. That is all I want to see from Ross and Ireland and once they show me that they know what they really are doing, I promise not to make any further negative comments about either one of them on the forum.

It makes perfect sense. My first choices for the position were were all former head coaches. After Fisher turned the Dolphin job down, it certainly appeared that Ross and Ireland were going to be hiring a coach who had no previous head coaching experience, except for Bowles, who had three games. So taking into account that the next head coach was probably going to take over and have no previous head coaching experience, I happen to have liked Chudzinski more than any of the other coaches who seemed to fit into this category.

I am not sure Chudzinski would make a great HC either, since he has never held a head coaching position before. I just felt that if the Dolphins were going in that direction once Fisher signed with the Rams, he was as good a choice as any of the other assistant coaches in the NFL with no previous head coaching experience. Obviously Ross and Ireland felt differently and that is why they hired Philbin. I just like the way Chudzinski helped turn around the Panthers offense with a rookie QB this past season and I thought he would be the best choice for the job once Fisher was no longer an option. I am certainly willing to give Philbin the benefit of the doubt and now that he is the Dolphins head coach, I want nothing but success for him and the team, I just happen to be a big UM fan and I have followed the coaching career of Chudzinski far closer than I have the career of Philbin, which I had never even heard of before he was listed as one of the candidates for the Dolphins HC position.
