Joe Philbin does sound like an excellent coach, but it seems like people are already hailing him as the next Shula. Before getting too excited, a lot of this talk reminds me of Ron Rothstein. Remember him? He was the Heat's initial coach and he also came in with excellent credentials, "the architect of the Pistons' defense during their championship seasons. In the end, he wasn't the right choice for coach. The Heat never had a winning record under him. Granted, that he was the Heat's first coach, but there was some talent on those teams as well: Rony Seikaly, Sherman Douglas, Glenn Rice. I truly hope that Philbin surpasses Shula's success, but we have to wait and not have our expectations too high.
Hi, I'm Miaimian. Call me if you ever want a dump taken in your Easter Basket or a dick put into your birthday cake. I rain on parades, that's what I do.
I'm going to have to disagree, not on the validity of your point but the thread itself. It's not everyday the fanbase seems to be overly happy or excited about a major decision our team makes. So Embrace it. If they wanna say hes the next Shula, so be it, Who cares? its going to be a VERYYYYYYY Long off season. We could use the optimism and i'm 100% for it. **** Just thinking about attempting a WCO and more emphasis on a passing game makes me giddy with excitement. It is a 50/50. it could be another camcam or it could be the best coach we ever had who leads us to a dynasty of greatness. I don't know about the latter, but if i had to bet money i'd say if we keep going forward with decisions like this, next season will be a good one, i've been wanting Philbin here for a while. All we have to go by is what we know. and so far what we know is that this a good thing, so let it ride out. no need to rain on the parade when this guys opening press conference in a few hours for crying out loud. Philbin for president. Yeehaw.
Seems more pessimistic to me TBH. But that's just my opinion. Why even make a thread like this, really? If that's how you feel, that is fine, but god forbid people on this specific forum are even smiling nowadays, I guess. Now that I think about it, i'm probably not going to watch the press conference now, because there is a chance he won't be a good coach. I mean geez do you remember Ron Rothstein? WHO DOESNT? Pffffft
Same here. It seems like the majority of the members here like the hire, but I haven't seen anyone crown him yet.
What in the living f*** does the first coach of the Heat have to do with this? Jesus Christ, and I thought I was a pessimist. Either he succeeds or he doesn't. How we feel about him won't affect that one bit.
People! Unwad your panties. All I was saying was that people are all a sudden gaga over this guy and he hasn't even held a practice with the Phins yet. I was referring to Rothstein because he came in with similar expectations and there are qualities that good coaches share across sports. Like I said before for the only semi-literate, I hope that his success surpasses Shula's, but let's not get out expectations too high. If anything, that's a lot of pressure on him even before he starts.
He's only 49 years old. Shula was 40 when he took over the Dolphins, but that's when they still played 14-game seasons. I don't expect it to happen, but it would be nice if it did.
We all know how to read. And most of us think your post was off-base on multiple levels. Nobody's calling him the next Shula. No one's claimed that he's even the next Harbaugh. And even if they WERE doing such things, let those people actually have a little fun. God forbid we have high expectations! Nobody's panties are wadded. Your post just kinda sucks for all the reasons we all have stated. Its okay. I post dumb crap all the time!
Well, not to rain on your thread, but it was McCoy that folks were calling the 'young Don Shula', not Philbin...
I didn't mean that they said that he was Shula, exactly. It's just the way that posts are read, I got that impression. Having high expectations often means that the reality is much harder to deal with. Come to think of it, I remember that talk was also similar about Waansdedt and look how that panned out. It's probably that experience that causes me to be cautious now. Beyond that, what if he doesn't all of a sudden start winning? What if the Dolphins are mediocre again next year? Just as many people will start calling for his head.
I think people can read whatever they want into things. I certainly haven't read or sensed any unbridled optimism or assumptions. In general, I've seen posts saying they like what they hear about Philbin and nothing more.
Just going to go ahead and point out here that the majority of "assumptions" I have seen so far referencing Philbin are negative. And then you start this thread further emphasizing that we don't need to be positive about things. What the hell is wrong with this forum? Can we not be happy optimistic fans for one ****ing day before we **** all over the new coach? Jesus tap dancing Christ, there's just no winning with some folks around here.
I had listed him as my top choice back when the search began. In the middle I got swayed to Zimmer and Taub, then back to Philbin when those two were eliminated so I can't say I'm disappointed at all with the outcome. I just haven't seen anybody predicting SB wins or even playoffs outside of a visiting GB fan. All the posts I see are people saying they like him and then discussions about the next thing that needs to be done either in terms of coordinators or the draft or FA. How does that qualify as people being in need of of reining in their assumptions?
TBH I was hopeing more from Saban and Johnson when they came in and I have high expectations whomever the coach is.I think people are cautiously optimistic after what has gone on over the past ten years.
Nobody needs an "irrational exuberance" speech. Miami needs some optimism in the fan base and we're finally pleased with how things are going. Playing devil's advocate is incredibly overrated and it's an aggravating thing in society every day. Nobody likes the dude who constantly says now let me play a devil's advocate because we don't need it. We're not morons, we've seen the Dolphins fail many times but this is a new try with a new coach. Nothing from the past matters except what the players carry with them. We're not decision-makers that have to do so, we're not coaches, we're fans getting excited about our team.
Why would you put low expectations on a high profile job? Expectations should be high and assumptions should be set aside.
problem is, its a high profile job with an extremely low success rate. I'm hoping the best for Regis, but its hard to be optimistic.
We may be overly optimistic, but who the **** cares? Us Dolphin fans haven't had a lot to get excited about over the last 3 seasons. More fun to think about the good things that could come of this hire rather the bad. If Philbin doesn't work out there will be plenty of time for us to cry. Today is a day to be optimistic.
There will never be another Don Shula, just like there will never be another Dan Marino. It would be nice to have another coach who is able to be anything close to a Don Shula but I would be happy if he is able to make his own name and bring respect and a winning tradition back to Miami.
O.K. thats a new one right there. I've heard Jesus has many middle names but 'tap dancing' is one I haven't heard before - so kudos to you there.
