c/att yds avg td int nfl rating 31/44 480 10.9 6 1 136.4 I'd love to see this guy in a Miami Dolphins uni next season. What say you?
What? The guy is only 1-1 as a starter!! Seriously though, it would be worth a long look. If the Colts do kick Peyton free we need to look at him (if healthy) but in either case signing a free agent would free up that first round pick. I'd guess Ireland will take the best OT left, but a pass rusher (DE if we go to a 4-3 or OLB if we stay at 3-4) or a stud WR would be welcome. BTW, you can say Flynn had all those weapons to use in Green Bay, but even with that said, he took FULL ADVANTAGE of them. Huge numbers in that win over a Lions team that really wanted to avoid a trip to New Orleans.
Absolutely yes if the new HC is planning on emulating GB's offense. What else do you need to see from this guy? We have no chance on drafting Luck so why not? GB is not going to franchise him and take a cap hit. We could trade down and really take advantage of this draft.
I'll pass. Someone will pay him Kolb-like money out of desperation and will get Kolb-like like results, because they don't have GB's weapons or coaching. Bringing him here would solve nothing, would be a more expensive version of Matt Moore.
Only if the price is right. And only that. He hasn't played enough for me to be fully convinced, but still you can't away from how well he's played when in.
Of course we should talk to his agent, make a fair and reasonable offer, then get ready to quickly walk away since the $$$ will be ridiculous and unrealistic with these 6 TDs in another owners eyes.
That's why we need to steal someone from their staff and start copying their blue print......voila!!! Offense fixed!! Damm I'm good!
I'll pass too. The Dolphins have been down this road before with other teams QBs - as we've seen with Kolb, they are often a product of the environment they are in and not as good when they leave that team. I know Hasselbeck is a Green Bay QB that had success elsewhere. I will caveat this to say if we get a coach/offensive coordinator in here that has ties to Green Bay and Flynn, I'll change my thoughts on this.
In reality, Flynn may be the best option for us next yr. There's no chance we're drafting Luck and RG3 is a big gamble. Everything hinges on the next HC.
Two starts against two quality opponents has put up the following: 55 comp, 82 att, 67.07%, 731 yards, 8.91 ypa, 9 TD, 2 int...121.54 QB Rating We haven't seen numbers like these since #13 played for Miami. Flynn imo is the best option available. Luck and RGIII will be gone. Landry Jones is not worth it (was at the game the other night and absolutely NOTHING special about Jones). Wheeden is too OLD. Would allow Miami to spend the 8/9 pick in the draft on a playmaker.
Agree 100%. I wonder who else will be in the bidding for Flynn. Cleveland might be an option with Holmgren but who the hell wants to play in Cleveland?
I imagine Cleveland has visions of a Heisman Trophy winner playing QB for them next year. Flynn will be signed before the draft. Just can't see Cleveland getting into a bidding war for him. The teams I could see are possibly Washington, Seattle, NYJ (but Ryan said after today's game they are committed to Sanchez) and Miami. Washington may like Jones (good riddance)...that leaves Seattle and Miami. Not sure how sold on Jackson the Seahawks are. Moore and Jackson, kind of the same QB.
Bottom line, we will go into camp with an open competition at QB, so why not bring in a FA that is only going to cost cap space but not draft pics. All I see is low risk/high reward. What would it hurt to have Moore and Flynn on the roster?
Irish is going to have to decide on Solai and Langford. How much are we paying them? How much did AZ pay Kolb? That's probably what Flynn's agent is expecting.
No way, if anything Kolb's deal will help keep the price respectable. At least until some assclown like Snyder throws crazy money out there.
Im not convinced that this is a Kevin Kolb case and theres no evidence to back that at all. Over the last two decades the QB's that GB has developed that went on to start for other teams: Mark Brunell Matt Hasselbeck Aaron Brooks Two multiple time pro bowl players and Brooks wasnt bad even if he wasnt great. I liked Flynn coming out, felt his career in college patterned Brady and while expecting him to be Brady is unreasonable I do think he could be a very good QB. By comparison, the QB's that Philly has developed over the years consists of Feeley, Kolb and other QB's that frankly were just not very good elsewhere. Whether thats because of Reids coaching making the QB's look that good or the situations those QB's went to being that bad the results and the quality of the qb's being discussed differs to an extreme. On thing I would advocate is to keep things within the same context. By that I mean we run more of a Coryell system now and I would switch to a WCO. Flynn knows the offense and would make the adjustment simpler. It would also mean we have to emphasize getting more WR's who can make plays after the catch and a TE who can run after the catch. That doesnt necessarily mean cutting or even demoting fasano though it definitely means improving our overall skill and athleticism at the position.
1993: Marino goes down for the season and in comes Scott Mitchell. After much success, Scott Mitchell is signed by Detroit. Epic fail 2008: Tom Brady goes down for the season and in comes Matt Cassel. After much success, Matt Cassel is signed by Kansas City. Epic fail 2010: Kevin Kolb is named starting QB for Philadelphia following McNabb trade to Washington. After an injury during week one, Michael Vick is named starting quarterback and Kevin Kolb is traded to Phoenix. Epic fail. These are only a few examples and I'm sure others can recall others off the top of their nuggets but the point is that too many times, back up quarterbacks find themselves starters on other teams due to extraordinary performances they've displayed, only to fail miserably. Matt Flynn played well today in Green Bay because he plays in Green Bay, with their coaching staff, their players, their plays, etc. Matt Flynn did what a back up quarterbcak is supposed to do, come in off the bench and run your team's offense as you've practiced it...then relinquish it back to the starter when he's healthy enough to play. Imagine if you will for a moment if Earl Morrall used his success during the Dolphins' undefeated '72 season as an audition for a starting job with another team? Imagine if Don Strock had done the same thing when he filled in for the injured David Woodley? The ONLY way I would agree with trading for Matt Flynn to compete with Matt Moore for the starting quarterback position is if we were to hire Joe Phibin as our offensive coordinator...and then we DolFans will still have to endure with the offense having to learn a new playbook and go through those growing pains yet again...for the 3rd year in a row. Alot of you guys are all up on which players we should get for next year...when the main focus is who we're going to hire to captain this ship.
There is no trade for him, just offer a respectable deal with incentives and escalators and let them go at it.
The comparisons you make arent the same. The players I listed came out of GB's system and went to other systems, Brunell and Brooks to a Coryell offense and Hasselbeck to a WCO. All three originally sat on GB's bench in their WCO. GB has a history of producing QB's that succeeded elsewhere even if that history is older, it still happened with a WCO (granted different nuances within the same system) from the same franchise. I wouldnt go crazy trying to overpay for Flynn but I definitely would consider it for the right price.
I actually think Blackmon will be the first WR off the board because I think hes more likely to have better measureables then the 6'2" 237 pound Jeffery. But Jeffery has three things I really like: he makes plays after the catch, he fights for the ball and he makes plays in the redzone. As an added bonus, hes a Gamecock, my alma matte
Gotcha. I think that Minny might be the wildcard of offensive playmakers after the Peterson injury. Had relatives in Danville that had me following the Gamecocks for a while. They actually got me in sent home from middle school with the old "I love my ****" T-shirts.
I dunno man. Cassel threw 27 TDs and 7 INTs in 15 games last year, went to the Pro Bowl and the Chiefs won their division. I think you just have to take it on a case-by-case basis. People knocked Aaron Rodgers coming out because of the Jeff Tedford factor. He's the best QB in the world now. Flynn has more film out there than Matt Schaub did when the Texans traded for him. Green Bay's weapons certainly beneficial, but Flynn didn't have all of them when they faced the Patriots last year and still did well.
Too easy to randomly pull out names and say "epic fail". Just as easy are "epic successes" 1956 Goerge Shaw suffers a broken leg and goes down. Johnny Unitas steps in and 3 MVPs later, an NFL championship and a trip to the Super Bowl. 1999: Trent Green goes down. Kurt Warner steps in and Rams win a Super Bowl and lose another. Warner goes on to lead the Arizona Cardinals to a Super Bowl. 2001: Drew Bledsoe goes down. Tom Brady steps in and after much success the Patriots win 3 Super Bowls and lost another.
And far as Flynn having weapons in GB making him good....in Miami next year he could have Marshall, Bess, Bush, an emerging Clay and Blackmon or Jeffery at his disposal. Not too shabby.
Drew Bledsoe goes down and Tom Brady steps in ... Vick goes down and Matt Schaub steps in ... Neither of those high draft picks.
Flynn or Manning. Doctors say Manning's neck is fine, you should go with him...........................
IMHO, the price for either Luck or RGIII would be too high. We still have holes that need to be filled and will need all the draft picks possible. I agree that we do need another playmaker, but we also need to address a RT either in the early rounds of the draft or thru free agency. We need a pass rusher and a free safety. Some of those issues may or may not be addressed prior to the draft. If we could get Flynn wrapped up before the draft, our new coach could fill in the other holes and hopefully we would be competative next year. I just worry that we would overpay to move up in the draft and get an unproven commodity over someone who has at least played at this level.
Since it now appears the Dolphins are not going to be able to hire a big name coach, one of the assistant coaches now being mentioned as the Dolphins next head coach is , Joe Philbin, offensive coordinator of the Packers. Perhaps if Philbin gets the job, signing Matt Flynn would make some sense. He obviously would already be familiar with the offense Philbin would want to run. It also appears highly unlikely the Dolphins are going to be able to trade up and get Luck or RG3. So Flynn just might be the best option the Dolphins will have in the off season to upgrade their QB position. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing Flynn as the starter and Moore as his backup going into next season. By signing Flynn, the Dolphins would also be able to use their draft picks to upgrade their offensive line and wide receivers positions.
You may be correct about McCarthy calling the plays. I just mention Philbin because his name has been mentioned as a possible candidate for the HC job with the Dolphins. I have no idea if he really has a legitimate chance to get the job. Even if you are correct that McCarthy calls the plays, you would think that if Philbin were hired as the next Dolphins HC, he would want to run the same offense they run in Green Bay. By signing Flynn and using the draft picks and free agency to upgrade the offense, this would certainly make it easier for him to install this type of offense in Miami.
