The Yankees and Andruw Jones have agreed to a one-year deal with a $2MM base salary and $1.4MM in incentives, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com (Twitter links). The deal is pending a physical. The Yankees have a full 40-man roster and will need to clear a spot once the signing becomes official.

The Blue Jays have agreed to sign Darren Oliver to a one-year contract with a club option for 2013, reports MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan. The deal is still pending a physical.

That Mariners have officially signed George Sherrill, the team announced in a press release. It's a one-year contract worth $1.1MM plus incentives.

Some one better invest in a CPU quickly for SD FO; otherwise, they cant even run the source code for the Moneyball type figures in the laptop to spit out who is worth the investment.....:tongue2:

Here are two lists of unsigned free agent relievers with above average K/9 and K% rates:

    Strikeouts Per Nine Innings (K/9)

    1. Kerry Wood - 10.06
    2. Ryan Madson - 9.20
    3. Mike Gonzalez - 8.61
    4. Michael Wuertz - 8.55
    5. Juan Cruz - 8.51
    6. Chad Durbin - 7.77
    7. Fernando Rodney - 7.31
Dan Wheeler just missed the cut with a 7.11 K/9. He would have posted an above average 7.30 K/9 with just one more strikeout last year, and I'm sure an umpire robbed him of a strike three call somewhere along the line. Free agent closer Francisco Cordero struck out a well below average 5.43 batters per nine innings last year.

    Strikeouts Per Batters Faced (K%)

    1. Wood - 25.5%
    2. Madson - 25.2%
    3. Cruz - 23.0%
    4. Gonzalez - 22.2%
    5. Wuertz - 19.8%
    6. Wheeler - 19.4%
    7. Durbin - 18.6%
Rodney (17.3%) drops off the list in favor of Wheeler, which essentially means that more of the outs he recorded were strikeouts, but Wheeler was more efficient and struck out a higher percentage of the batters he faced. Make sense? Cordero was again well below average at 15.3%.

    *************************

Madson is the most intriguing on that list.....I know it may be overkill, but would love as the price drops that Cashman makes a play, an says basically, F the #5 rotation spot, we toss anyone and simply survive till one or both of the B's are ready. We simply deepen the pen. LOL! :tongue2:

I just think he has so much to offer but not at $10M a year....get him for 1/2 that over 3 yrs, and it also sets up for any DOUBLE EXTRA insurance for Mo time off or eventual retirement.

The UniVax IS a bit slow...

    See=Championship!

Hmm, Castro was considered in Casey Kelly's league as a pitching prospect:

    http://www.minorleagueball.com/2011...castro-vs-casey-kelly-of-the-san-diego-padres

Quentin has good pop at least, we definetely needed a bat.

I like it for SD (local kid coming home).....needed some RH pop....hopefully he stays healthy. Only negative is that his OF skills arent top of the charts, and thats a lot of ground to cover.

The Blue Jays have acquired Jason Frasor from the White Sox in exchange for right-handed pitchers Myles Jaye and Daniel Webb, according to a press release. Frasor, 34, returns to Toronto where he played his entire big league career before being traded to the White Sox mid-season.

The veteran right-hander had his $3.75MM club option exercised on October 31st. It's possible that the White Sox picked up the option with the intention of dealing him this winter. Frasor posted a 3.60 ERA with 8.6 K/9 and 3.9 BB/9 in 60 innings for the Blue Jays and White Sox in 2011.

Yeah Quentin is not a very good OFer. Apparently the Red Sox had initial conversations with Chicago about him but it never got very far because of their doubts he'd play a good RF at Fenway.

Also FWIW regarding Simon Castro, last year Baseball America ranked him in SD's Top 10 at #3, this year Castro wasn't even ranked in the top 10. Either Castro really fell off the prospect map or a lot has to due with all the talent Hoyer and Mcleod brought into the farm system their short time with the organization.

The A's have agreed to sign Coco Crisp to a two-year, $14MM deal that includes a club option for 2014, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney.

The Cubs and Reed Johnson have agreed to terms on a one-year, Major League contract, the team announced. It's a $1.15MM deal, according to Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune (on Twitter).

The Marlins have agreed to sign utility player Greg Dobbs to a two-year deal, according to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald (on Twitter). The deal is worth $3MM, tweets Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com -- $1.5MM per season.

This is one of the few moves I don't think will end up working out for TB. But hey a RP for 1 year at a low cost, might as well try right?

Low risk high reward. But I agree, I don't see Rodney doing well at all. Good stuff, but zero command. Command is huge out of the pen obviously. I don't see him getting much work for us.

Or Farnsworth right? That's why you don't give big money to RPers, you never know which no name or former useless pitcher will have a productive year.

Well the problem with that is how many teams would give those types of guys the closer's job in the first place? I mean give TB credit, they have made it to the playoffs 3 out of 4 years with more than 4 different "closers". Guys like Percvial, Wheeler, Soriano, Farnsworth, and JP Howell all collected saves during those years and really only Soriano was looked at as a good RP at the start and end of the year. Their GM and first office realize that the closers label is overrated and won't spend money on a guy for that role and even in their pen. They have a history of taking random guys and crossing their fingers and hoping for the best (and somehow it almost always seems to work out for them). I mean who thought Farnsworth would have been good last year?

I mean if you look at the established closers in the MLB none of them were ever looked at as future closers. On the flip side I could name countless guys that when they were drafted/signed were viewed as closers of the future that never amounted to anything. Pitching is hard, especially relief pitching. I just makes zero sense to spend money on guys that will throw maybe 70 innings for you a year. You better off taking TB's approach and signing guys cheap and if they don't work out, ship them out and hope your farm system has young kids that can step in and fill roles as October comes closer. Or make trades for young cheap arms with years of contract control left like the Red Sox are doing right now.

The Marlins have done it pretty successfully with Armando Benitez, Joe Borowski, Todd Jones, Kevin Gregg, and Leo Nunez.

History has shown that unless you have an elite level RP, the most efficient way of setting up your bullpen, is to let average arms collect saves and then sell high on them the following year.

It helps having effective starting pitchers as well, going deep often, and not putting those average relief pitchers in situations they shouldn't be in.

Here is my take on moneyball....simple and quick...and I didnt read that....

The sabermetrics aspect of it has redefined the game, and will continue to do so....for both large and small market teams....

Thing with Beane is that IMO I dont think he is a good GM at all....he adheres to this "window" which often just turns into him peddling guys off, while also spending next to nothing on a veteran free agent (like a Coco or Matsui etc) who are in their down years....I believe if he got this window thing out of his head, he would be better, or he just isnt as good as a talent guy as he is lead to believe...

Since becoming a GM in 98, in 13 season has gone to the playoffs less than half of those, with no WS appearances or AL pennants (obviously).....the team hasnt been above .500 since 06...

My point is that something is going on, because other small market teams are competing and even spending money as well....look at the Ray, Twins, Marlins, etc....

No, because Peralta was getting less then a million.

Plus he had success in the past, including a pretty good 2009. So taking a chance under a million that he will repeat was a good signing to me.

This is a good deal for the Braves since they get about ten runs every time Zambrano is on the mound. I wonder which player(s) he'll throw at this season.

minor league contracts...dime a dozen and ST fodder.....wont matter till they break camp and if another diamond in the rough pops up like Colon or Garcia, but not expecting it to do anything but fill camp and maybe fill Minor League roster space.

I like the potential of the Adam Miller signing. Was once a big prospect but injuries (most recently to his finger) really derailed his career. Apparently still gets the ball up to 94-96 MPH. Most likely he'll get hurt again and never come close to pitching in a MLB game but every team should sign a handful of these types of players each year just in case.

sure, but LONG SHOTS for sure...every team should fill Minor rosters...but sheesh....dreggs!

We'll keep track of today's minor moves right here..

    • The Pirates announced that they signed right-hander Logan Kensing to a minor league deal that includes an invitation to Spring Training. The 29-year-old spent the 2011 campaign with the Yankees' top affiliate after recovering from elbow surgery in 2010.
    • The Reds signed catchers Brian Esposito and Brian Peacock to minor league deals, tweets Matt Eddy of Baseball America.
    • The Tigers signed utility player Eric Patterson to a minor league deal, tweets Eddy.
    • The Mets signed right-hander Jeff Stevens and utility player Corey Wimberly to minor league deals, tweets Eddy.
    • The A's signed right-handers Travis Schlichting and Merkin Valdez and left-hander Fabio Castro to minor league deals, Eddy tweets.
    • The Yankees signed right-hander Adam Miller and outfielders Cole Garner and Dewayne Wise to minor league deals, Eddy tweets.
    • The Diamondbacks signed first baseman Mike Jacobs to a minor league deal, tweets Eddy. Before playing, Jacobs still must serve a 50-game suspension for positive a HGH test in August. He was cut by the Rockies following the test.
    • The Marlins picked up right-handers Chad Gaudin and Rob Delaney on minor league deals, Eddy tweets. In nine big league seasons, Gaudin has a 4.63 ERA with 7.1 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9. Delaney spent most of 2011 with the Rays' Triple-A affiliate, posting a 1.86 ERA with 7.6 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9.
    • The Dodgers signed third baseman Josh Fields, according to Goldstein (via Twitter).
    • The Cubs signed Joe Mather as Triple-A outfield insurance, according to Goldstein (via Twitter). Mather spent 36 games on the Braves' major league roster in 2011.
    • The Nationals have signed right-hander Dan Cortes, according to Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus (via Twitter).
    • Speaking of the Braves, Atlanta released former Rangers draftee Marcus Lemon, Goldstein tweets. Lemon was acquired in a March trade for a PTBNL.
    • P.J. Phillips, the younger brother of Brandon Phillips, agreed to a deal with the Reds, tweets Goldstein. The younger Phillips' career never got going due to plate discipline issues.
    • The Blue Jays signed former Angels/Braves relief prospect Stephen Marek, Goldstein tweets. The right-hander was outrighted by Atlanta in November and underwent Tommy John surgery in May.
    • The White Sox signed 2000 first-round pick Corey Smith, Goldstein tweets. The 29-year-old has never reached the Majors.
