Still too soon to give up on him. I know he's been dealing with injuries this year. I don't mind trading picks for Luck. But I think it's pointless to make our bad OL even worse by getting rid of a top LT.
All three teams would jump at the chance for Long. He's, at worst, a top three left tackle in the league. The players they drafted would move to right tackle. It can't hurt to have two great tackles.
The only QB's in the upcoming draft who are first round quality are Luck and RG111. Any team taking Tannehill, Weeden, or Jones in the first round are obviously desperate for a backup QB. I don't see Tannehill or Weeden ever being more then a backup in the NFL and Jones is going to need two or three years before he might be a decent QB in the NFL. If the Dolphins can't make a deal to trade up for one of the top two QB's, I would just prefer the Dolphins to take a safety, wide receiver, or a right tackle with their first round selection. If Tannehill, or Weeden are available in the fifth or sixth round, the Dolphins could use one of these picks, if they are still looking for a backup for Moore over the next decade.
Giving up Long to get a franchise Qb is worth it. We could put together a quality Oline with later draft picks and free agents a lot easier than we could find a franchise Qb with later draft picks and free agents. Theres no coach or GM in the league that wouldn't give up an elite LT for an elite Qb, its much easier to put together a decent oline than to find elite Qbs. And for the record I love Long and hope he retires a Dolphin some day down the road.
While true, we know Jake Long is elite. We don't know that Luck will be very good, let alone elite. And people are still suggesting giving up multiple 1sts, multiple 2nds, and Long? Personally, it makes me glad that we play almost no part in these decisions.
Have you studied them in depth to arrive at that minority opinion? Tannehill or Weeden in the 5th or 6th? Unless they get caught with ten lbs of weed in the trunk of their car, or something similar, no way does either one last til the 5th round. Tannehill will be gone by the mid to late 1st. Weeden may last til the 2nd or 3rd due to age, but for talent alone is a definite 1st rounder. Jones should stay in school one more year.
