    I think that's your answer.

He probably is a little bit overpaid, but signing quite possibly the most reliable pitcher in baseball to a 4 year deal is not awful.

edit: also, starting pitching is our biggest weakness.

I'm guessing it's because of the # of years, the money, the age of Buerhle, his stuff (although it will be much more effective in the NL) and the miles on his arm.

Personally, I don't think the deal is awful, he's definitely overpaid but I'd rather go a little over for a Buerhle with a shorter/smaller contract than Wilson for a bigger/longer term deal.

Pujols to the Angels for 10 years 250-260 million, full no trade.

This is the definition of awful contract, especially for a 1B.

Guess he didn't really care about returning to St Louis. They had a 200 mil offer on the table. His agent must have convinced him to take the extra 40-50 mil since 200 million is 200 million.

How in the world is he the most reliable pitcher. He's reliable to be decent, and most likely nothing more. Giving a decent 32(?) Year old a 4 year deal worth 12 mil a year is a definition of awful IMO. Considering the Rays have 5 starting pitchers not named price or shields that could output the same or similar #s for under $1 mil.

Marlins seem to want be going about this the wrong way IMO. But I guess they need to spend money to get the fans excited and make sure people come out. Can't blame them there.

I agree. Im glad the Marlins didn't get suckered into that 10 year contract, much less 250+. Eshhhhh

Leverage guys, it is all about leverage...He would have left STL for 250M.....and he got Miami involved (whom if they bid 250 he would have went there)...dragged a little bit, just enough for a team to go bonkers....

Nolan Ryan's club just got real bad today....and as well I would love to see the Mariners get Prince and really screw the Rangers....

which RF, will make him a dominate pitcher in the NL, because his stuff translates very well even in the AL....he is like Petitte to me, not overpowering, but knows how to pitch...

Reliable as in guaranteed 200+ innings of ~4 ERA. Given the volatility of our staff, there's value in that.

Of course there's value in that. That's a good #3 starter. Only if he eats up200+ which he will do. But you don't pay 3s 12 mil a year.

My god at this rate James Shields is going to get a 5 year $80 mil.

I'm not exactly thrilled about it either but when you've missed on basically all of your pitching draft picks over the last few years, this is what you have to do.

We can't all be the Rays.

I bust Nappy's chops about Shields alot, but that kid is a very VERY good pitcher, miles ahead of Wilson....

He is the an ace unlike Wilson....at the very least he gets 85M over 5 IMO....

I guess. I probably over stated the 'awful', I was just struck by the details. I was expecting 3 years at most and $30 mil which I thought was to much anyways.

I don't think anybody knows the answer just yet. Wilson has only started 2 years while Shields has 6 years. While Shields has 2 or so seasons better then either of CJs years. But Wilson was also in that airport of a ball park.

I would probably go with Shields long term ......

annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd Shields had to pitch against the Sox, Yanks, and Tor, while Wilson fattened up against Oak, and Seattle every year......with that he still had better numbers....

For one year. He also pitched in that launchpad in Arlington for half of his starts.

If you want to argue they're similar, then fine. But miles ahead is hyperbole.

I doubt Buerhle will be a dominate pitcher in the NL, he doesn't have the stuff to be dominate. But his numbers will look better that's for sure.

Finyank thinks the NL is litte league or something.

The guy throws 85. He's not dominating anything.
