Bulster Olney just got done repeating all the regular "hate" lines at the winter meetings..

"People don't think this strategy will be a success."

"Sources say they have a concern that the Marlins won't draw because of the location of the ballpark."

    blah blah blah....

Maybe Olney should call the Marlins ticket office, and try to buy a season ticket ans see what's available. That will answer his "concerns".

That thinking is just stupid. I have long term concerns about the Marlins ability to draw, but obviously Loria and Sampson know what they are going to draw this eyar. they know what the advance ticket sales look like. They are not idiots.

And it's not like they have don't have any young studs on the team. Stanton is on his way to being the premier power hitter in the majors. And LoMo, not quite at Stanton's level, has had success in the majors already and is only 24. It isn't exactly sign Reyes, Pujols, and Bell and not having anyone around them. It'll work if Pujols signs here.

Oh yeah I get all of that about how the South Florida fans don't care etc but I guess I don't really translate that into the hate for the teams itself (minus the Heat of course, because they're hated for obvious reasons). I think it has more to do with the actual fan base of South Florida than it does with the actual teams (again minus the Heat).

Again I have no dog in this fight nor do I really care if the Marlins do well or not (although I probably will be rooting for them or Washington this year to win the East) so you can call me crazy but I do think those are valid concerns.

I mean as a fan of the Red Sox I've watched them sign big free agents to big contracts the past couple of years (Lackey, Crawford) while missing out on the playoffs the past 2 and the team not having won a single playoff game since 2008. Simply signing FAs to big contracts doesn't guarantee success. Especially since and let's be fair there are question marks with Heath Bell (he's a RP, that alone is a risk) and Jose Reyes (health). And isn't it possible that the Marlins won't draw after the 1st or 2nd season? I mean teams almost always do well selling tickets to a new ballpark in the first few years but what happens after the novelty wears off?

I'm not saying that the Marlins won't do well or that they won't be able to draw but I don't think it's unfair for Buster or anyone else to at least raise those questions or have concerns about them.

To be fair though, any team that signs a free agent is banking on that guy actually performing like the guy they thought they were signing.

The Red sox collapsed because their high priced players just simply didn;t playw ell down the stretch. That ahd nothing to do witht hem being high priced necessarily. A team full of young cheap players could collapse in such a manner too if all the other stuff that was present for the sox was present in their situation

Word is that it is a done deal.

Albert Pujols will sign with the Miami Marlins for 10 years 225 million.

The topic is not whether or not the franchises are hated, the topic is whether or not Miami would be the most hated sports town.

    Holy wallet, Batman.

LOL that is clearly not a compliment!

I have to agree. I dont see the hate for the Marlins from Met fans the same way I see it for the Braves or Phillies. Maybe its because the Marlins really only do this once every ten year thing where they actually put forth effort in to signing FA's, I dont know. Like I said a few pages ago if Reyes was going to sign with an NL East team I would rather it be the Marlins then the Phils or Braves...or even the Nats.

I would truly be surprised. Pujols legacy is in STL. For him to leave after a WS title...I mean its not like the Cards have a bad offer on the table....

Got it an email, and it is trickling out everywhere that this morning, Pujols told St. Louis management that he was leaving.

There are only two teams seriously pursuing him...so 2 + 2 = He is a Marlin.

On the number, I got that from a media member, that it was the number they were offering. previous offer was 9 for 200.

That's 100% correct. I guess the point I was trying to make is just because they're signing these players to big deals doesn't mean their strategy is the right one, but like you said it's up to the players in the end.

This is just a dumb contract. Giving someone that's at least 31 years old a 10 year deal is just silly. This is going to end badly.

Yup you're right that's how it started out but Anoy specific mentioned that the Marlins were always hated. Still though going back to the original point, I don't see how Miami is more hated than New York.

    Wow.

    Just incredible.

If it's confirmed I'd love to see the structure of the deal. Have to imagine its front loaded over the first 4 years or so.

    guys..like I tweeted earlier.....with big free agent signings...come $10 beers...fair warning.

I remember my first credit card statement that read $96 "LLC catering company" from the AAA after we first got the Big Three. and that was just Beer.

    Eh, what can you do?

Food prices at stadiums are roughly equivalent to a decent movie theater anyway. If you get the tix for a decent price, or are willing to sit in crappier seats, it's not so terrible

No it's because you're going to be paying a player big money in his late 30s and early 40s, well past his peak years. Let's name all the players that continued to have success at those ages that weren't being chemically enhanced. If you think he's going to be the same player he is now in even 2018 or 2019 you're going to be disappointed. Look at how quickly Alex Rodriguez has declined because of one injury, or how quickly a guy like Jim Rice declined once he hit his mid 30s (note that I'm not saying it's going to happen with Pujols but just pointing out the risks involved). I just think it's a mistake, way too long of a contract, especially for a team that doesn't have the DH spot to fall back on.

Sorry but that's terrible justification for a 10 year contract. At least get greedy and say he'll put up typical Pujols numbers for the first 4 years, below Pujols numbers for the next 2 and then for the final 3 be league average at the position.

So if this deal with Albert pans out, is the bank closed or its there still room for pitching?
