Actually, this is something I've tracked, he has not been at his career Qbr since...the Giants game? Denver? Since then he has consistently been over 80 Qbr, Henne was pretty much stuck at 75% with occasional over 80's, MMoore is consistently over that and consistently at 60% completions but with more plays down field then henne consistently.
IDK, when you have Marshall and Bush and Fasano and Bess, life is fairly easy for the Staff and Qb. Daboll worked the same sort of thing in Cleveland aside from delhomme, Wallace and McCoy both played well for him with not as much talent on offense
I remember. I didn't see the big deal though. Guy's been a head coach at a major university, and he's coached offenses. Coaching receivers and quarterbacks continues to be kind of interchangeable IMO. If I was going to complain about what was happening on the coaching staff, the last thing I was going to harp on was Karl Dorrell moving over to QB Coach.
I want to see Matt Moore win a game or close a game out before I'm ready to give him the keys next year. He had an opportunity against Dallas and couldn't get it done. He's a better option than Chad Henne, no question. He's got some issues still. However, he's playing very well within the system. That's really all that matters. He's capitalized on the opportunities he's had and we are scoring TD's, which is nice to see.
With Jake Long protecting his blind side, what I have always felt like is a very good receiving cast, and a ground game averaging over 4 yards per carry...Matt Moore has an 87.6 passer rating on less than 200 yards passing per game, and 9 fumbles in 9 games. If you account for some of those extras like the sacks, scrambles, rushing touchdowns, lost fumbles, etc...then his passer rating's down in the 77.3 area. It's nice...we're winning games and it's nice...but it's very Jay Fiedler-esque. It's just sad that aside from one year with Pennington it's been a long time since we had someone as good as Jay Fiedler.
I think thats stating it perfectly. Its Fiedler-esque. No question he should compete next year to start. No question this franchise MUST draft a franchise QB.
Fumbles have nothing to do with QBR or completion percentage CK, sacks go on the Oline as much as the Qb, and 4 ypc helps any Qb succeed I'd doubt you'll find a good Qb without a running game averaging at least that much, probably more then 4 ypc. And how would rushing Td's reduce his QBR or overall play? Fiedler never had a winning season without a running back having 280 carries, we do not have anything approaching that this yr, we'll be lucky to see over 300 attempts between Bush and DTrain, who are not Williams or Smith in terms of talent, in fact Fiedler's "best" yrs, Smith had over 300, Williams had 383 and 340 carries. Bottom line CK that is a rather gratuitous removal of 10 QBR points from MMoore's performance....
IMO, it is both. People before the season were too quick to negatively judge Matt Moore. He's a UDFA that Carolina gave up on so he must not be any good, seemed to be the general mind set from the majority among the huddled masses of Phins fans. He didn't have an appreciably high number of starts in college, but when healthy in the NFL had shown some potential. We should have a more complete picture after the next 4 games. I'm optimistic though. As I said early in this thread, back in May, I liked him very much when he played for Oregon State, and saw no reason to change my positive impression based on his healthy time in Carolina. You were very astute to start this thread Sir Padre, well before Moore was signed, and I'd forgotten a lot of what was said previously in it, so thanks for bumping it.
IMO, Moore shows much better passing skills than Fielder ever did. Simply saying Moore is just another Fiedler seems short sighted to me. I don't care about the stats of either one, it is just when I see Moore out there doing all the things a QB does, I don't think to myself, that he reminds of Jay another more than he reminds me of dozens of other QBs.
Thanks Mr C, believe it or not, I do try and recall most of what I say on here, even at 100,000,000 posts to date. IIRC, this thread led CK to post up a thread with Video mashups of MMoore, and they sort of convinced me that he was not very good. Which goes to a larger point, "We", meaning fans, have a habit of being spoonfed information rather then just waiting until the guy plays, this is a rather odd realization as I typically try to remain mildly contrarian in approach to these things. MMoore has exceeded expectations, clearly, even "MattMoore's#1Fan" did not attempt to say he'd play as well as he has played, and I do agree, the last 4 gms will tell the story for MMoore as the Starter, this is the part of the yr when Chad Henne fell down time after time, we've closed with 3 gm losing streaks in 09 and in 10, MMoore's time to shine now...I think his level has been established: 60% completions mid 80's QBR 1 TD per gm Exceed them on avg in the next 4, and we have something, if that is looked at clinically, Philly/Bills/Pats, all 3 are crappy defenses, every Starter at a skill position on offense is healthy, this is the best shot at proving he can deliver that MMoore is likely to get in the NFL. Myself and CK went round and round about another player, 09 CFL DPOY John Chick, he did not like his game, I did, he never saw the field in Indy but has gotten a chance for the Jags and has 3 sacks and a FF as the designated passrusher, which is the sole reason why I'm going to bother with the MNF game tonite!
Jay Fielder also couldn't throw an out pass or any pass that needs some arm strength. The statement, "Matt Moore is the best quarterback since Jay Fiedler," makes me really sad.
Oh, but we are to take that with a grain of salt, because he is just a former UDFA journeyman who only did it against weak defenses.
This is one the pratfalls that this thread sort of highlites Aqua, we compare players to players we have watched play before. What is the basis for comparing the two? MMoore has a stronger arm, is not as scattershot, but MMoore is not as good of an athlete. People tend to forget Fiedler ran for over 300 yds in either 2000 or 01 or somewhere in there, MMoore is more likely to run for some tuna sushi then he is to pick up yards when he runs...and yet, that is the comparison.
Chambers and McMike vs Marshall and Fasano? We also have not had the caliber of running back we had in Ricky back then either.
I'm guilty of it myself, I compare MMoore to Penny, 96 starts by the time 08 rolled around vs, oh, 20 or so for MMoore now, oh that's fair. And yet, there it is, I think that comes from the NFL mantra of "have you seen anyone, who reminds you of his game, who has succeeded in the NFL before"? And the memory banks are searched, and comparison made and voila! they are so and so. Mr C, you've been around the block enough to recall Qb's, medicore Vet Qb's, going to the 49ers and changing their careers around, why is it that is no longer called to the forefront of discussions?
Fiedler did pretty good for a dude with glaring limitations. would have been a good back-up .... just like Moore. we may see next year whether or not he is better than that - as we will unlikely see it this year, based on the overall competition over these last 9 games ...
Feidler's problem was he was just brittle. Got dinged up too much, played dinged up at times. Remember him even playing in a shoulder harness due to a left shoulder injury and having to hand off with the other hand.
He had a torn rotators cuff. Even though I was never a Fielder fan, that guy was a ###### when it came to playing with an injury.
I think Moore is doing a fine job, but I don't know how everyone is forgetting the horrendous job the O-Line did the first 6 games of the season. The ABOVE AVERAGE play by the O-Line is one of the biggest reasons Moore is doing so well. He almost always has a clean pocket compared to the first 4-6 games.
I'm a bit behind you all here as I've yet to watch the Raiders game. I have seen the Jets / Buffalo and Dallas game. The Dallas one MM showed what he is. Someone who is not confident in himself. How a QB can drop the ball from the snap, three times was it, shows he is not paying attention to what he is doing. Is is worrying about other things, rarther that letting the opposition worry about him. We lost that game because of MM. We were all over Dallas. Inside that last 20 more times than I can remember without scoring. Shocking! Who runs the ball first down inside the 20? Throw it first. The time he could have run and collected a first down and didn't was unforgiveable, once he could have scampered in for a touchdown himself FFS. He must, to improve IMO. Man up a bit, and if a hole opens up for him to run into, then he MUST do it, and also be confident in what he is doing. Oh one more thing, buy a razor and remove that bum fluff on his chin.
And yet, we had the lead, with 3 minutes to go, the D did not do their job. ST either for that matter, Graham hits that FG for example.
If you guys wanna know why we're winning games take a look at Matt Moore's TD/INT ratio over the last 5 games: 7/1. We all know how highly TD/INT ratio correlates with winning. For all those who loved to say Henne's stats were on par with other good to even great QBs, his TD/INT ratio was almost always less than 1. Just about impossible for a QB to play winning football in today's NFL without a TD/INT ratio > 1. Also, Matt's deep ball is so so so so so much more accurate than Henne's.
Jay, for his faults had an ability to rally the team. Moore shows leadership as well, but yet to really make a comeback. I would say that the comparison to Jay is fair except that Moore has not reached his ceiling imo. i think his poise is improving and he is less desperate with the ball. i dont know how high that ceiling is though. i think we also need to temper our expectations. besides 2 or 3 QBs in the league, most of the other guys besides Moore will have a game where they are just average and don't kill their team. i sometimes get the impression that fans here expect 3 TDs per game or nothing at all.
MM doesn't IMO show enough learship qualities as yet. Far too many fumbles from the snap for me, and that in turn would knock the confidence and desire of the team
Listening to the telecast on Sunday, Gumbel/Dierdorf said Moore's teammates said the exact opposite. One by one, they lauded his 'natural leadership'. Moore had said he appreciated his receivers being 'patient' with him while he got acclimated.
Moore's biggest deficiency is decision making under pressure. So, the biggest question is will that improve over time?
He's also cut down on what I'd call "dummy throws", the ones Henne used to make in 2010 that Sparano called "impulse throws", MM used to be infamous for those.
